The thing is this game is actually really good. The only problem is that it was the next 3D Mario game after Mario 64.

And Mario 64 was so groundbreaking and revolutionary that there was no way anything could meet our expectations.

This game could have come with 30 grand and a free hooker and people would have still liked Mario 64 better

And I think they used Mario in this commercial, because it is for a Mario game, and since Mario is popular, espesially to kids, this ad would get people to clean up the enviornment. It wasn't just a commercial for a video game, it's a commercial to help protect the environment, along with MARIO helping out. In fact, he even cares for the environment! Remember that episode of SUPER MARIO BROS. 3 when Bowser was trashing not only Brooklyn, but it the whole real world. but the MARIO BROS. saved it. That's what MARIO's trying to do in this commercial! He wants to do what we should all do. SAVE THE ENVIRONMENT!
