I really have to say this sounds like sleep paralysis - I know, because I experienced it twice in my late 20's. Same thing - I woke up, couldn't move - and had an overwhelming fear and a feeling that something was in the room standing near the bed. I thought it was death itself or a ghost, although there was nothing there. It was just a sense of overwhelming fear. Then you just come out of it.
