@ bouillonbeefcube...Thanks for posting this clip and I am thankful to all whom shared such wonderful comments about Ms.Esther Phillips. If you see my pic and think wow this lady resembles Ms.Phillips, well that is because we are related. My grandmother found it amazing that I resemble and vocally remind her of Ms. Phillips. I always wondered where my love for singing came from and that is when my granny shared with me the family story of Ms.Phillips in 84' I was 11 @ the time. Thank you.
astounding; this WOMAN QUEEN OF MY TURNTABLE; sets the hair on my neck crazzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzy; she moves me gratly; MET HER IN 84 OF january; one of the biggest days IN MY LIFETIME!
Wow. Seeing Esther in a club takes me back. What a treat. In the 70's she did a video of her Boarding House appearance for KQED TV in San Francisco. I wonder what happend to that.
One of the greatest losses to music when Esther died so young. Outside soul fans hardly anyone noticed. Let's hope people out there can learn to appreciate those who really can sing with feeling.
Wish she were still around. True talent and rawness that can't be bought. Her "Alone Again Naturally" album is THE BEST. If anyone can upload it, please do. It is a GEM.
Ilove the net and u-tube I get lost in it, takes me back to my teens when we had goddesses like this around. Thank you all who put these gems on the net.
I saw Esther live years ago when Alone Again Naturally (the lp) was first released. She was/is still my all time fave singer. I loved seeing this. Thanks!!
I have loved this woman's voice since I was 5 years old and heard her sing "No Headstone on My Grave" and "Release Me". To this day, there is no one who can hold a candle to the feelings she puts in a song. Love you Esther
The song penned by Gil Scott-Heron, "Home Is Where the Hatred Is" -- a haunting account of drug use -- was lead track on "From a Whisper to a Scream" which went on to garner a Grammy nomination that year. When Phillips lost to the "Queen of Soul" Aretha Franklin, the soul diva presented the trophy to Phillips, saying she should have won it instead.[
Phillips' long-term heroin dependency, combined with heavy drinking, led to her death from liver and kidney failure in 1984, at the age of 48
@loosestudios did Esther release that track before Gil did, I think she did, I could be wrong, no Esther did release that track before Gil hit me up and reply
Esther held the record for being the youngest female singer to ever have a number 1 R&B hit. She actually had 3 number one hits during her debut year in 1950 at the age of 14! "Misery" was one of her many hits that year, so when you see people clapping at the beginning, those are the old timers that remember the phenomenal Little Esther when she was with the Great Johnny Otis Band in 1950. I believe she should be considered THE FIRST ROCK AND ROLL TEEN IDOL..
SO MUCH SOUL almost TOO MUCH SOUL; a true ORIGINAL and no mistake, Esther is BAD!

She was a terrific singer, her potential largely squandered on heroin and booze which killed her.
