  • SO MUCH SOUL almost TOO MUCH SOUL; a true ORIGINAL and no mistake, Esther is BAD!

  • I LOVE her.....so so so amazing

  • @ bouillonbeefcube...Thanks for posting this clip and I am thankful to all whom shared such wonderful comments about Ms.Esther Phillips. If you see my pic and think wow this lady resembles Ms.Phillips, well that is because we are related. My grandmother found it amazing that I resemble and vocally remind her of Ms. Phillips. I always wondered where my love for singing came from and that is when my granny shared with me the family story of Ms.Phillips in 84' I was 11 @ the time. Thank you.

Esther Fhillips is my all time favorite female singer!!!!!

  • One of the greatest losses to music when Esther died so young. Outside soul fans hardly anyone noticed. Let's hope people out there can learn to appreciate those who really can sing with feeling.

  • Love U Esther!

  • She knew her subject. God love her. Life is cruel to the point of being a sick joke sometimes.

  • I love Esther Phillips!

  • Love Esther. This woman cold sing!!!

  • What a great talent

  • She had a long career starting out on the road as a young teen ... known as little Esther in those days ...

    x

  • She was a terrific singer, her potential largely squandered on heroin and booze which killed her.

  • But damn she had a good time though.

  • what is the lp on appears this song?

  • I saw Esther live years ago when Alone Again Naturally (the lp) was first released. She was/is still my all time fave singer. I loved seeing this. Thanks!!

  • Comment removed

  • I have loved this woman's voice since I was 5 years old and heard her sing "No Headstone on My Grave" and "Release Me". To this day, there is no one who can hold a candle to the feelings she puts in a song. Love you Esther

  • The song penned by Gil Scott-Heron, "Home Is Where the Hatred Is" -- a haunting account of drug use -- was lead track on "From a Whisper to a Scream" which went on to garner a Grammy nomination that year. When Phillips lost to the "Queen of Soul" Aretha Franklin, the soul diva presented the trophy to Phillips, saying she should have won it instead.[

Phillips' long-term heroin dependency, combined with heavy drinking, led to her death from liver and kidney failure in 1984, at the age of 48

  • @loosestudios so sad.

  • @loosestudios did Esther release that track before Gil did, I think she did, I could be wrong, no Esther did release that track before Gil hit me up and reply

  • @loosestudios You are right.

  • You found a permanent place in my heart!

I found a permanent place in your heart!

  • 2.18 of bliss, it's a sherr joy to hear this.thanks for the post

  • WOW..This is still how i feel after all these years listening to this great woman..awesome..sadly missed..

  • love love love! miss esther - miss you

  • Esther held the record for being the youngest female singer to ever have a number 1 R&B hit. She actually had 3 number one hits during her debut year in 1950 at the age of 14! "Misery" was one of her many hits that year, so when you see people clapping at the beginning, those are the old timers that remember the phenomenal Little Esther when she was with the Great Johnny Otis Band in 1950. I believe she should be considered THE FIRST ROCK AND ROLL TEEN IDOL..

  • I love how she talks/sings because she's ALWAYS telling her story.

    I love Esther!

  • Esther is plain incredible and this clip is sublime...wish it went on forever! Miss this great singer and glad Alone Again is now on CD.

  • Say, hasn't anybody got Esther doin' "Cry me a River Blues" and "Stormy Monday"?

    alive in memory!
