Wa 'alaikum as-salaam... coverage at the back is fine for me. If you watch my 'organising scarves' video, I had done this style & was out in the snow - didn't get any neck cramps lol Perhaps the length also needs to be long enough so that, once knotted, the scarf can be pulled back also and pinned around the back of the head. The size I'm using is around 200cm x 70cm approx

Where are you finding it difficult to make neat? If it's messy overall, i would suggest: practice, practice, practice... you'll get the hang of it.
