Dudes, this used to be the title music for a UK TV programme and I've been racking my brains (and Google) for the answer - I simply can't find out what the programme was. Any Ideas??
@Gramra I'm very sensitive about this issue but I don't think the directors were randomly anti-semitic as you have suggested. Anti-semitism was a great deal more prominent in that society then it is in todays society, and it was necessary to portray this as Davids character was Jewish. To leave peoples reactions towards this out of the script would have been ignorant, particularly as the film is set in post-war Britain tensions would have been high-see the reference David makes to Wagner
@yokosaur Well, if I understand correctly this is based on Lynn Barber's life and she had an Israeli boyfriend named Simon who turned out to be kind of a dick. I guess that's where the whole "Jewish" thing comes from. In the movie, it just seemed like they just had to hammer it into our heads that the guy was a Jew, as if they're trying to make some kind of correlation between his religion/ethnicity and him being a creep.
@yokosaur At first I liked this movie, but then the more I thought about it the more I kind of felt disturbed. You see, I like the U.K (I haven't been there, I plan to go at some point) and it wasn't so fun to see a mainstream British film promoting one of the crudest and most ancient permutations of intolerance. I don't really know what they were trying to imply, but it came across as rather irresponsible.
@Gramra The film is hardly promoting such a relationship, its delves into the fickle mind of a young nieve girl who loses track of what she really wants, due to being lured into a life of glamour. The conclusion of the film proves Jenny's demise after leaving school life, and then the man she left it for was not worth her loss. She ends with the life she worked for in a respected educational establishment, which provides us with the message that education should be a young persons main priority.
@Gramra. Don't know what you're talking about - this is one piece of music that is great - what on earth has it got to do with intolerance or anything else???? What a load of bollocks!!!! This is just a great piece of piano playing - nothing more, nothing less!!!!
@Gramra You're just looking for things that aren't there to be angry about and it's extremely narrow-minded. The fact that he is a Jew is mentioned very briefly. I didn't even remember he was a Jew until you mentioned anti-Semetism. If this is your logic then all men cheat on their wives because he has an affair in the film - ridiculous.
@Gramra It is not an anti-semitic film, its content explores the issue that was relavent to the time period, prejudism amongst jews, blacks, etc. I feel its casual use of offensive terms shows the modern viewer just how far society has come in a matter of political correctness as well as an accurate history of our past prejudism.
Just saw the movie last night, got it from Netflix and loved it. Came here looking for some of the songs. I love this one, apparently originally from that time and so perfect for it. Like the story in movie, the songs reflect the time just a breath before the Beatles; when the cool thing was to be refined, upbeat, but sophisticated.
I see some others had the same thought I did...that it sounded like Vince Guaraldi.
It definitely fit the care-free schoolgirls atmosphere of the opening credits. It's light and a touch innocent.
Listening to it, I wonder what I'd have thought of 'An Education,' going into it without knowing what it would truly be about, after seeing this opening sequence.
Saw this film last week and loved it, and the minute I heard this song I was back in the 60's! I just love this song. Such a light and happy little song. I have been playing this song over and over. I love to hear songs that make you reminisce days gone by and what you were doing back at that time when you hear a particular song. Sometimes that can be so uplifting to the spirit, and it might just come at a time when you really need to be uplifted. Movie soundtracks can be so great.
