I also liked the guy who did the monologues in the first act. He did one about a conversation with his mom and the other was about getting fired. He was great. He was in my district as well and was actually in the showcase at districts.

I think Glenn's voice is perfect for this song. She SOUNDS like she's from another time, and she infuses her voice with such hope it's heartbreaking. I've never been as invested in the song when people just belt it out and sing pretty.

the real story is that Patti Lupone was supposed to get this role but she had just played Evita in another Andrew Lloyd Webber musical and he didn't want to be that director that uses the same actors over and over. Of course she BLEW UP at him for not getting the role and their friendship suffered. Glenn eventually got it. I'm sure she was amazing but....that song is meant for a belter...not someone who talks on the pitch. I wish could have heard Patti do it.

@caroline8705 She did the World Premiere in London. Glenn followed after in LA. The the fight was on as to who would play the part on Broadway, even tho Patti's contract stated it would be her. Glenn obviously got the job.

I would agree that Andrew Lloyd Webber is the best musical theater composer named Andrew Lloyd Webber; but he cannot hold a candle to the genius of Sondheim, or Lerner and Loewe, or Rodgers and Hammerstein... not to mention, Webber only writes music, and usually has one "pretty" song per show that he uses (Don't Cry For Me Argentina, Memory, this song, Love Chagnes Everything...). He writes the music first then forces his lyricists to fit his tunes... and that is where his work fails, IMO.

I've enjoyed most of the ALW shows I've seen, but the only ones I would actually call "good" would be Jesus Christ Superstar and Evita- and I have a feeling that the fact both of them were concept albums first might have something to do with that.

I've saw Glenn Close in Sunset in LA when it first came out and she and the whole show was magnificent. Later, I saw Elaine Paige on her first night at the Adelphi in London with Andrew presenting her a huge bouquet of flowers and she was great. Later, I saw Petula Clark sing this role in Atlanta and she was fine as well. But Glenn is the best!

I wish I could sing this song like Glenn Close. she sings so beautifully being a Soprano it does not sound right to me. thou my teacher says I sing it well in spite of the fact I am a soprano. I have to sing the song a Half a Tone Highter because the song it written for a Messo-soprano and that's what Glenn Close is and so is Patti LuPone and Barbra Streisand. I just love Messo-soprano voices they are so beautiful
