I miss this show. i used to watch it with my grandmother at her apartment all the time. My grandmother loved Punky Bruster. i remember my grandmother would always say "Boy that Punky she's a little rascal, she's always getting into mischiff". I only remember bits and parts of Punky but I couldn't remeber the whole gist of the story cause I was too little at the time to really remember the plot. I'm glade I watched this vid. Thanks for posting!
The lady was the original "Punky Brewster" when the Brandon Tartikoff (producer) was little, He had a crush on her. When Tartikoff grew up and later became a programming chief at NBC, he thought the name "Punky Brewster" would be a good name for the title character of a sitcom about an old man who adopts an abandoned waif
Brandon Tartikoff wasn't a producer on Punky Brewster, but rather NBC's programming chief as you said. The real Punky Brewster was Peyton Brewster, whose nickname was "Punky" when she and Tartikoff were kids. By the time the show was in development, Tartikoff had his lawyers track down Peyton's whereabouts so they could obtain permission to use her name. When they found her, she had already become Peyton B. Rutledge (the "B" presumably for Brewster), who had married a Connecticut lawyer.
@VaultMasterDBT On the dvd extras Cherie Johnson said that her uncle David Duclon created Punky Brewster and she read the script. Then she asked him if she could play Cherie. He told her no because he sold the script to NBC and that she would have to audition for the part. He is credited for creating the show. So if that is the real Punky did they create the show together? Just curious.
I had no idea that David Duclon was Cherie's uncle. That explains why Cherie also worked on Family Matters, where Duclon was later a producer. Punky Brewster, though, was already created by Duclon before Tartikoff decided on what the lead character's name should be. Therefore, Peyton Rutledge had no creative control in the show's development, as she probably wanted nothing to do with show business anyway. She wasn't even a Chicago orphan in real life. :)
@VaultMasterDBT Yeah that's her uncle that's why the character is named Cherie Johnson he named it after her. She went in to audition and nailed it. She would also read the script for Silver Spoons and The Jefferson's.
that's cool that the teacher is the real punky brewster. and I alwasy feel bad when Punky is sad and she cries. That was a good scene between her and henry.
I think it's cool that the lady at the beginning is the real Punky! :) I always thought that was cool and its ironic how she says "Strange name" lol
