My 1.8 focus Tdci used to do this! chuffing blue smoke, and chugging. I also had a loud diesel knock on very cold mornings! was a combination of a blocked egr valve, and the wrong oil! According to Ford, Small independant garages tend to use 10/40oil in everything, and ford diesels are very sensitive to the wrong oil. they like synthetic oil, 5/30 or 5/40. The oil leaks through the valve seals, collects in the cylinder, then causes smokey poor starting.
glow plugs? starts well on warm days but rough on cold days? diesels need to preheat to aid combustion. If glow plugs are crappy then one or more cylinders do not 'fire' properly causing rough running etc. If in doubt take it to a diesel specialist, Ford prbably don't have a clue
my 2005 has been doing this for a couple of years but not when outdoor temp is zero or below,If it was injectors this would not be the case plus it would not settle down after a few seconds. I think you may also have a misfire at 1100 revs when cold, try starting and then slowly increasing revs to approx 1100 probably will start missing and smoking but perfectly ok when warmed up. I think is either a CPU or sensor problem
Thats not normal me and a m8 both have tdci 130 and nither of ours do it. thats defenitly an injector problem. + you can se on the floor what looks like water not normal.
Thanks for your info, its worth noting that the water was not from the exhaust, i think it had been a damp night so it was from the dew.
Problem is, if I go spending £1,200 on 4 new injectors, what happens if it doesnt fix the problem? it's starting fairly well with the milder weather now.
Have you tryed any injector cleaning stuff. the problem sounds like an injector stuck open and it wont be all + just one.
I have an injector fail when i changed my fuel rail. I don't have the money to get them replaced so thought to hell with it an hit it with a hammer not hard. as soon as i did the it came back to life and has not bothered me since. 1st thing to try in injesctor cleaner in case its just crap clocking it up. If that fails might need more proswation lol
Same as my 2004 Mondeo TDCi & sweet for diesel cold start, got to say after 15 years in motor trade having worked for Porsche, Renault, Vauxhall & Audi along the way, my Mondeo has been the most impressive car I've owned, o.k not fastest or prettiest but it's just so good at everything, not a lot can keep up with it & having commuted 186 miles each day to London averaging 48 MPG for 8 mths & not hanging around, what a car!, ordering new 2.2 TDCi next month, you won't find a better ALL round car!
yes this is totaly normal. its part of the cold start process. any diesel will do this all its just partly unburnt fuel going through and it will do it untill the engine warms up and it is able to burn the fuel properly.

Looks like a possible injector problem. They Delphi injector are a known weakness on TDCi engines, as is DMF failure.

I think, that the white smoke means injector failure.
The black smoke means not enough oxygen.
And the blue smoke means turbo.

Smoke ruins DPF in exhaust.
TDCI diesels suffer from failing injectors.
U can have em tested on the car, plug into diagnostics and fire each injector in turn, they all should have a sharp clatter, if dull then thats it.
Ir it could be air in fuel system.
I suggest u get it plugged in and do diagnostic if ur worried.
Or just run it until it wont start?!
