  • What a weird video for such an amazing song. It really has nothing to do with the meaning of the song at all. I wonder if it was ever aired on TV.

  • J O L E N E !!!!! Yeah !~!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • hope they funk us out groovy style. All horns, piano and guitar! All great voice with excellent lyrics. Keep it comin.....

  • 9 losers don't know what fantastic is when it hits them in their faces!

  • @koololdster

I know what fantastic is, you obviously don't, and this certainly isn't.

  • @johnyringoz That's 'cause you are a moron.

  • @koololdster i agree with u he is

  • 2:02, Its the old Doughtry Chevrolet bundling on El Camino,Here in Sacramento. This video really captures the good old days of sac. As new and crappy as they really are.

  • I'm in love!! Music to my ears!!

  • i love cake and turtles

  • @width13 you are worthless your ears should be confiscated

  • @wildth13

Then go and find something you like. Stop being a hater!

  • @wildth13 its their style of music. It's being original.

  • Ive seen Cake 5 times in concert, one of my top favorite bands, Like Beck so under rated for such an awesome band..They were so far ahead of their time, at a time when music basically sucked... They were so above everyone else like Beck and Radiohead was and still is....Maybe by word of mouth these guys will be heard and get the recognition they so richly deserve....

  • The production techniques used in this video are relics of a bygone era.

  • It's a cover of a song but not a cover at all. It's the retelling of the story from a different perspective. How fucking brilliant is that? 100% Win

  • was that ron paul?

  • Cake Power!!!

  • These lyrics are like a drug.

  • My names Jolene...

My boyfriend enjoys mentioning this is his favorite song by Cake.

  • Hmmm, I thought this was a cover of the Dolly Parton song. Not bad though.

  • @GhostDistortion Too many people make that assumption. This song is FAR superior to anything Dolly has ever written and I wont accept any claims of the contrary.

If you've never known your own "Jolene" to think about when you hear this, it's not Cake's fault.

  • @AntiChristAntiFail Don't get me wrong...I wasn't saying it was worse or better than the Dolly Parton song. I think anyone that compares the two songs would be comparing apples and oranges. Too many people compare things that are not peers and try to say oh this is better than that or so on. It baffles me when someone would make statements like Slayer are better than Mariah Carey or CAKE are better than Dolly Parton.

  • @GhostDistortion I can accept that. I just have a weird stance on this particular song, because once during a stay in the hospital my nurse was named Jolene, and I didn't even realize till I got home days later that when I referenced this song she was thinking of the white stripes/dolly parton song.

  • @AntiChristAntiFail Cool. Glad you enjoy it.

  • Second fav. Cake song! Can't wait to use my Christmas presents -tickets to see Cake 1/20/10. Yeee-Haw!!!!!!!

  • @koololdster umm....that would be last year....

  • Keep reppin up sac town cake

  • i think i saw the devil at 2:21

  • fail.

  • 6 people's faces will never be cast in red.

  • I told a nurse about this song once while in the hospital (her name was Jolene) and she thought I was talking about the white stripes. I didn't realize it was even a different song till I was out of the hospital! This is the ONLY Jolene in my world!

  • I prefer a girl with a short skirt and a long jacket :)

  • Thier tune "Wheels" is better.

  • Comment removed

  • I loved a girl whose hair smelled like "Creme rinse and Tobacco smoke" I can't listen to this song with out smelling it and thinking of her.

  • Best Cake song bar none.

  • I can't believe anyone can dislike this song...when I heard them play this live, I almost cried. It was so beautiful.

  • @Deltaxray7 ...this is his day job... your dumbness hurts my fucking head

  • Great song,underestimated at best

  • Low priced video for a priceless song. Such a fantastic band.

  • Although I don't like the part at the end much..

  • Amazingsauce song! Cake is great

  • i love most things by these guys, but this isn't one of them. awful, really. what happened?

  • Cake's songs forever in my heart and in my mind... No other band can make me feel in a so joyful mood!

  • are they still recording?

  • yes, they're still making new music. I saw them live on NYE and they played a lot of new songs from an upcoming album. no clue when the album will hit, but soon i hope.

  • no those are all remakes of songs that already exist haha

  • Yeah I think so

  • @zosolemos yes, they have a new album coming out soon

  • This song always stuck out for me. I love it, and I once knew a Jolene who needed rescuing, I hope she's OK these days.

  • @dildomatron its sad but no one can ever really be rescued, ive tried to save people from bad situations before also, but u cant save them from themselves

  • I added Stewie from family guy to the beginning of the song.

Its from the first episode where Stewie is at the air port and talks to a worker name "Jolene".

  • Not one for favorites, but this is my favorite from this amazing band. Just got my first dog this week and named her after the song.

  • thought it was another cover of the classic, glad it was a Cake song I havent heard yet

  • havnt heard yet? its off their first album.what kinda fan.

  • i like it kinda heavy but u cake fans r really on 2 something

  • One of my favorite CAKE songs ever! :D

  • One of? This IS my favorite Cake song! It's so insanely epic.

  • @oserself All of Cake's songs are my favorite! ;')

  • Though Gabe Nelson isn't on all of their albums I still think he's CAKEs best bassist so far, but Vic Damiani wasn't bad

  • i swear PuddlesMD69 wrote the same thing on like all the cake vids i just watched.

if i were gonna see them i wouldn't listen to them the night of the show...i think it would take away from the experience at the show

  • i usually listen to albums by the bands im going to see before shows. That's just me though, puts me in the right mood

  • who cares who was in it and when...this is an awesome song and it was an awesome album. and last but not least ...i bombed korea every night...

  • Going to see them tonight for free in Balitamore!! SOOOOO Stoked!!

  • "Cream rinse and tobacco smoke"....you know weve all been there!!!

  • The two "keys" to CAKE are John and Vince (notice how they are the only members from the original group)

  • XAN McCURDY is the one on lead guitar. He was in THE LOVED ONES and the KINETICS- two great Oakland, CA bands then he got in CAKE. He is the KEY to CAKE!

  • Xan wasn't actually in Cake when they wrote/recorded Jolene and "motorcade of generosity". he's not in this video either.. he didn't join the band until "prolonging the magic" in 98. loved ones and kinetics were great bands, and he's a great guitarist, but i don't know that he's the "key to cake". personally, their first two before him I think were their best albums.

  • i completely agree the original guitarist GREG BROWN's influence made CAKE great.. i Dont care for most of their newer stuff XAN McCURDY included.. lol

  • You are very astute. And the first two are probably my fav's. I got Motorcade on the limited edition orange vinyl!

  • .... i just don't think this was one of their best.

Frank Sinatra, Symphony in C, Mexico, rock and roll lifestyle, ruby sees all, etc.. Are all better songs...

  • I never much appreciated Ruby Sees All. Although all the others were fine. Jolene is good IMHO! My favorite though is "Is This Love?"

  • There are SO many great songs to choose from, but I listened to "maybe I'll come down" yesterday and DAMN, what a great f'ing song!

  • This song never fails.

  • Saw them last night in Washington DC Cake is one kick ass band GREAT LIVE show!!

  • i was expecting a Dolly Pardon cover, like the white stripes did, but this is still awesome!

  • Not just awesome, it blows away everything ever. Best song from the best band ever created.

  • I sense your enthusiasm, but idk...

  • Comment removed

  • "I want to cast your face in lead ," Classic . These guys were great live , if you get the chance .

  • Not only one of Cake's best tunes, but this video rocks! Amazing, put together nicely!!

I'd rate this in the top 100 videos of all time!

  • Ah i thought this was a Jolene cover.

    Either way, still cool.

  • Cake is such a great band!! Going to see them at the 9:30 club in WashingtonDC May 30th so Stoked!!

  • You lucky bastard.

  • I saw them at the Moore Theatre (in Seattle) in the front row of the freakin orchestra pit!! IT WAS AMAZING!!!!

  • Are they as cool from front row?

  • better in the middle crowd experience is just as fun as the band. seeing them in a big venue right in the middle is the best.

  • I'll wait for them in Paris then.

  • I would love love love to see Cake in concert. They are the most awesome band EVA!!!!! They are so talented, They knock my fuckin socks off. Wow.

  • haha I havent heard this song. Cake freaking rocks. Thanks for uploading.

  • looove this song, and agree with fuff24, they are one of the best kept secrets, but that could be why they're so amazing. when artists become popular they often loose alot of their integrity and their music becomes more mainstream

  • this video, is it really cake in the video? somehow, i get the feel the guy is just a lookalike

  • if it's fake, that's a damn good fake...

    I think it *IS* cake!

  • This is a totally different song than White Stripe's song except for the title. Cake is in a different sphere anyway (in my humble opinion!!)

  • u know the white stripes coverd that song?its originally dolly parton's....done best by mindy smith even if u dont like country..

  • Loveee Cake!

  • CAKE is one of the best kept secrets ever. They COULD have gotten bigger, but I like the the way they are.

  • I used to share the same bewilderment that such a great band never get enough credit and praise but on the plus side, its our little secret and i feel sorry for all those that overlook these guys. Genius

  • @jiggamannodoubt i agree, the way i figure, its hard to get credit when you are in a league of your own. hence noone else to compare themselves to. But that is just my two pennies.

  • Comment removed

  • you are a fuckhead, white stripes jolene lol oink

  • Actually Jolene is originally by Dolly Parton, and this isnt a cover of either the White Stripes or Dolly Parton's original

  • i know

now they are like my favorite band

i wish more people knew them and their songs

  • dude, CAKE is seriously like one of thee greatest bands of all time. it both amazes and saddens me though how many people don't know who the hell CAkE is when i ask them...

just seems like they coulda gone alot bigger...

  • Saw them in Toronto in September. Wished so hard for them to play this song. They didn't, but the show was still, awesome though. They opened with Frank Sinatra and played a song off the upcoming album.

  • Well well well boys and girls, what a fucking great band!!!!

  • i dont understand how cake wasn't the biggest band in the world, i geuss the mainstream media doesn't know good music

  • I know...it makes me sad that alll my friends want to listen to is jonas brothers and all that mess. And i'm sitting there jammin to Cake ^_^

  • no the mainstream media is meant to keep us under control and therefore will not play anything that makes us think outside the box. Fuck tin foil, if you simply THINK the government can't use their mind control on you.

  • Haven't listened to Motorcade that much in years - it's an album that has aged very well.

  • Wow, that John Mc. Crea was my drill sargeant's megaphone! I love CAKE!

  • I think there first CD was there best. Jolene and Ruby sees all were EPIC

  • Indeed it's a very good album.Very nice.Rock & Roll Lifestyle is a tube too...

  • i think this might also be a song by the whitestripes

  • The song you think that is by the whitestripes was originally a Dolly Parton song that they covered. This is not the same song

  • Just discovered these guys today and already I am addicted! Just how fab are they! :-) I love the Eels and these guys remind me kinda of them.

  • They're the coolest...With the little trumpet...You can listen to them at any time you like,it's always sooo entertaining...

  • it's so uplifting

  • And so cool too...

  • this guys deserve a lot more notoriety than they have...

  • i agree with you,

  • thgese guys remind me alot of the chili peppers. same style i guess. both amazing bands!

  • you're obviously a person of refined character, or a moron... I'm really not sure.

  • I'd go with a moron

  • if it sucks so damn bad why the hell did you click on the link??

  • too bad the video doesn't include the beginning of the song.

    its the best part.

  • Best cake song, that song always give me a loving feeling...that band is the best! love ya jolene!!!!

  • Ja, it clearly has the rizing action.

  • this music reminds me something that I cannot remember... I think it's the most beautiful and sensitive CAKE's song. This band is something that I cannot explain.

  • Now, you can't miss the rising action in this song..

  • I love that flute thing in the second verse

  • those are the panpipes you're talking aboutand yeah they fit in perfectly with that part of the song ;)

  • I loved this song since the first time I heard it on my "the distance" maxi cd, it's still my favourite Cake song, I prefer the live version btw :)

  • THANK YOU

  • This is the best song anyone has ever written. It's timeless simplicity and true groove allows anyone listening to be captivated by it's lyrics while giving them the metaphorical painless hit, to borrow Marley's famous quote. Not to mention the funkiest Wah pedal action you can find anywhere. Goddamn are they funky.

  • I agree that this song is perfect in many ways. I do get swept up by this song with its pace, lyrics and "groove"

  • the best song eveeeeer!!!!

  • Good god, this song is beautiful. I love the screaming in the end.

Cake seems to have something with crushing fruit underfoot in their old videos...

  • i know. i was thinking maybe they just made those videos on the same day. kill 2 birds with one stone.

  • God Dammit how does both Greg and John get such awesome tones its so awesome

  • everytime i hear this song i wanna cry and laugh at the same time. i love it so much. thanks for posting the video.

  • god i luv this song

  • This song always takes me back, but it gives me inspiration to move forward...incredible--music and lyrics both!

  • One of may favorite Cake songs. Thanks for posting!

  • Cake Rocks!

  • Wow, the internet is a crazy thing. This is the song that made me love music. Cake fans rule!

  • Still my all time favorite Cake song since I first heard it nearly 13 years ago. Noting is better or as unique as this band. IL510, you and I must have had similar experiences growing up in Sacramento.

  • awesome :)

  • Great song from a great band. Cake rules!

  • Thank you for posting this! Such a great song (from such a great album). They're from my hometown, and I remember listening to this song over and over again in junior high the first time my heart was broken by a boy. Awe. ;)p Anyhow, I really think their first album is genius.

  • Wow. I've never heard this song before.
