  • Not much of a video. Mostly black. Don't they believe in lights on their trains? I saw some on the front of some, but they obviousely don't do anything useful.

  • @TheMrBlinx :

I refer you to the comments posted previously. The train does have headlights, however their primary function is to make the train visible to others. They are offset slightly towards the floor. And the clip was filmed using a 5.1mp digital camera without a flash so naturally the clip appears dark.

  • Love shots from the cab! I did wonder if I could use some of the footage to help market a map I've produced called 'tubular fells'. I'm producing a short presentation combining shots of trains in the Lake District with images from the London underground. The map, for your information shows Alfred Wainwright's 214 fells in the form of a topological, Harry Beck rendition. If I use the footage I'm sure I can give you a map as thanks. Anyway, whatever you think thanks anyway! Peter

  • Feel free to use it, by all means.

  • Is this you driving?

  • I couldn't possibly comment!

  • @grumbler70 Emmm...? Ues or no? LOL

  • the driver just about stopped at the mark, knowing my luck he was breaking the line speed. He's lucky they didnt download his train

  • The line speed on that particular section, between Archway and East Finchley, is 40mph. When the 1995 stock was introduced, their performance was capped to match that of the 1959 stock and thus avoid bunching of the service. The restrictions are still yet to be lifted. Thus, as a result of this and the uphill gradient approaching Highgate, it is almost impossible to get the speed above around 32mph. So no, the driver wasn't speeding.

  • @grumbler70 Isn't that going to be fixed when they roll out ATO on the northern line as the 1995ts is pretty much the same as the 1996ts but at this present time the 1996ts seems to have better acceleration and that explains why.

  • @voyanger : I believe that was the original plan but I've since been told that it's now going to be left as it is. Only the acceleration away from stations will be increased and maximum braking will be used on approach to stations and Block Marker Boards. I can't understand how LUL expect to cut journey times by 20% though, if they're not going to utilise the 1995 stock's full capabilities.

  • nice ..now all we need is some spitfires fliying over london and we wil be all set.....love it...

  • Jesus! those units dont half decellerate & stop quick.

(no leaves on the line there then i take it). : - )

    great video.

  • That is actually a very fast and well judged stop. Very good indeed.......using maximum brake for the stop board is a skill......certainly wasn't an ordinary Northern line finish!

  • Thank you very much! It's about maximising the train's braking capabilities, much like the ATO lines. I'm a great believer in the maxim 'let the train do the work', particularly when it comes to coasting. Too many drivers are constantly motoring and then braking and it just seems unprofessional.

  • oh so headlights are used, it would seem weird with no headlights on in the tunnel, and ive never been to a london underground so wondering where is the other track which goes the opposite way? is it just a one way line?

  • that would be in a seperate tunnel

  • opposite way track is in the other tunnel which is near the this tunnel.

On some lines there is no separation, but on deep-level lines its separated

  • The other tracks go in seperate tunnels and station platforms. At Westminster's Jubilee line station, I think they are even on top of each other!

  • Yep, they are

  • @Jump2893 Lines generally run alongside each other but with a wall in between, giving the lines their own separate tunnels

  • Thanks for theese fab videos, been so facinated with Underground train cabins recently!

  • Is it true that you need toStop so that the Green Thing is nicely centered in the window so that your doors can open?

  • yup it's true, you have 2m to play with

  • The headlights were on. They are automatically illuminated when the leading cab is 'live'. They're not very powerful though and on a low resolution clip like this it appears as if it is in complete darkness. This is not the case, however.

  • why arent you using the headlights?

  • whats the top speed of a northen line train?

  • Officially they were built with a top speed of 62mph (100kmh), but because of signalling restraints they have been governed so they only operate at around 60-65% of their capabilities.

The line speeds for the Northern Line are as follows:

    Morden-Archway/Golders Green via Bank: 35mph

    Charing Cross branch: 30mph

    Golders Green-Edgware:40mph

    Archway-High Barnet/Mill Hill East: 45mph

It is worth remembering that these are general speed limits, not taking into account speed restrictions.

  • wow is it REALLY that dark in the subway? That's pretty close to pitch black.

But if it is, I'd get one of those $50 50-million candle power flood lights and light that sucker up!! Just for fun of course.

  • i want to be a jubilee line train driver when i grow up!

  • Are you serious, the Jubilee is due to go ato soon and when that happens it will become both boring and annoying. Boring because all you do is press start and open and close, and annoying because the sound effects that have been put into the 1996 stock are really annoying, even when in coded manual.

  • Yeh but aren't they all going to be automated in the future?

  • I Know £30,000 Aint Bad If Its Your 1st Or 2nd Job

  • you need to have 20 20 eye sight to see in the tunnel

  • This video is awesome =] - I want to be a tube driver when I'm older. Do you plan to do any more videos like this one?

  • why? crap pay i heard

  • its not just about the pay, its enjoying it, and besides £30,000 a year isnt a crap wage

  • it is good pay and its quite fun

northern line would probably the best as you get a variety of where to go

  • Crap pay? Ha ha, they get like £42k per year, how is that crap?

  • I've uploaded a new clip. Apologies for the jerky picture. I'll try to keep them coming.
