It might be an adaptation of an old "negro spiritual" called "Free At Last." But from the lyrics I find on the web for that song, this is different. This one is more a tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King, using those words as a refrain. So I'm not sure what the actual title of this song is.
@LykOhEmGeeKyle3 I used to sing this in elementary school!! Brought back memories of five-eleven years ago (kindergarten to sixth grade). Anyway, I looked up this song and it's called 'Free At Last" by Teresa Jennings.
I couldn't find a full copy of it anywhere, though, but there are samples of it :)
It is wonderful that they're being taught empathy from such a young age. That's how you avoid anything like that ever happening again. They know right from wrong.
Wow, that's a big assumption you make that these kids are being deprived of all the other beautiful aspects of American music culture. I'm not sure why you would make such an assumption.
123hott, below, sung this as a kid. So did I. The musical culture of America is so vast-- why do we have to perpetuate this white self-guilt so much, as too make our children focus their music on slave songs? My whole 4'th and 5'th grade music class was ALL slave songs... "WE shall overcommmeee!!", "The river of jordan is chilly and cold!". I dont think we should be deprived of all the other beautiful aspects of American music culture because of liberal guilt. thats my two cents

And when this happens, when we allow freedom ring, when we let it ring from every village and every hamlet, from every state and every city, we will be able to speed up that day when all of God's children, black men and white men, Jews and Gentiles, Protestants and Catholics, will be able to join hands and sing in the words of the old Negro spiritual:
Free at last! Free at last!Thank God Almighty, we are free at last
Martin Luther King Jr.
And this is exactly, what that great man thinking about
