The US engine is way different, you/they clog it up with silly thing to try cut emissions down, also trim and the back panel are way different to the Euro spec.
Btw, detonation is when all the fuel in the cylinder burns simultaneously instead of progressively as it's supposed to. Causing the pressure to ramp up very suddenly, pushing the piston down when it is trying to come up. Bad.
The least likely thing to cause this is running rich. =)
Don't we all sound clued up? Cat, Ignition timing, Throwing flames being bad, hehe. Simply running quite rich on a pre-heated engine, bad for the exhaust in that there's a fire inside it. That's up to the owner, it's doing very little harm.
Ford have designed a new system which burns off excess fuel in the exhaust of their new diesel pickups, which should give you some idea of just how little damage this is doing.

the rabbit is the us version of the gof mk1 means the same in both and both arethe exact same car exept for some trim and headlight difference
