  • @Tirbrath I agree with what you say but were our forefathers any different?Devalera and his followers were only interested in consolodating their power with the RC church. They were never interested in making this country an International Agricultral or Toursit success.Micheal Collins and Sean Lemass were an exception but were few and far between. Also the Irish as a whole are not used to handling money.

    Hope things change too.

    Cheers!

  • A shower of gullible mugs populates this island, I am not in the least bit surprised that things turned out as they have. The country is run by a criminal syndicate (Fianna Fail) and they play whatever tune the banks tell them to play- NAMA. For the last 15 years the thicks in this country were too busy drooling over trinkets to notice that the country was being destroyed incrementally. And still people have not got up of their arses and done what the people of Iceland did- get indignant.

  • @Cytacon maybe it's all the illuminati...I mean, Orange Lodges and Irish Republican Brotherhood...NI was an inside job...

  • IRISH PEOPLE PAY THE COST

The state is spending more than 91.5million euro a year to accommodate 7000 asylum seekers, due to 7yr backlog. There are 14,131 'leave to remain' applicants whom the Justice Dept. describes as having 'unfounded' claims for asylum.

Meanwhile our health, education systems are breaking down and Irish people are being told to emigrate.

  • ignorant piss of trash y dont u go hold your government responsible

  • I'm sick of this negative mind-frame people in ireland appear to be stuck in....the fact of the matter is, that yes our economy has taken a blow, but if we look at the worldwide picture, there are other developed nations in the same, if not, worst situation than ourselves......

we need to be positive about things...We have the infrastructure.....we have the low taxes....we have the highly educated workforce...all we need is for the global rec. to be over and we can be back in business.....

  • This isn't over. The UK and and the US will be the hardest hit, bar none, by the time it's said and done.

  • It's easy to blame the Irish government, when the polititions would not have been re-elected if they started raising interest rates to stop the bubble from bursting. Most people in Ireland would have voted Fianna Fail out of power in 2006 if they did what was financially sensible because it would involve people making sacrifices then albeit smaller ones than they have to make today.

  • The government is Ireland is the most incompetent bunch of fucking idiots that have ever graced the earth!Greed and Corruption murdered this country...planning laws were torn up,banks created their own mortgage products without regulation giving mortgages of up to 120% of property values, the average worker is now in debt of 300,000e for a 35 year period, homes are being repossessed, suicide is rampant, and whats the result??the government bail out the developers and bankers, the poorman loses again!

  • Eirinn go bra'th...

Y'all should've listened more to De Valera. ;)

  • No we should have killed De Valera,

  • how bad i feel for yous...not that many property hunting around bulgaria and hungary and best parts of spain and so and such.....the higher you go, the bigger you fall... ...in general you are nice people, but you kind of forgot that money and wealth is not everything in life...save for that pint of course..

  • everyone saw it coming, they just ignored it until it was right up on their tails

  • Nice caption! What intellectual genius found that appropriate?Could I hazard a guess and say it was an English person?

I suppose all of this should be viewed in context- there are worse off places. Its not a bad case study though for other emerging economies to learn from. Although this report is a bit flimsy.

  • this you call problem?you should go to third world country and you know what survival is.

  • not applicable. you should try being a lion cub in africa !!!!!!!!!

  • I can't see anyone starving anyway.

  • Dear old Ireland - in the shit. Bugger.

  • Don't you mean "bogga"?

  • I saw it coming read the economist

  • this is not even close to sad.

  • JP has made some of the saddest clips ever, like haiti, congo, its endless.Any 1st worlders have luxery problems and we are soooo ungrateful we terminate.;~^

  • You do know you're an American too! I just finished a debate with one of your countrymen about that.

  • ok the united states-iners caused the crisis

  • What about Europe? Some countries are practically bankrupt (ie. Iceland, Estonia). Others, like Italy and Greece, have debt:GDP ratios that are horrendous. The Euro might collapse as a currency because of the Scandinavian, Austrian, and German banks lending to Eastern Europe which has defaulted on many of the loans.

Oh right, It's all America's fault!

  • Well it started with America, its a chain reaction, so yes its all Americas fault.

However its going quite well in Norway, thank good we are not in EU, ;D;D

  • So everyone will thank America when they recover, right? I mean America is so powerful and controls everything so no one has any responsibility but us, right?

  • fascism isn't good for business lol

  • Azzaeiel, you know what fascism is don't you? It's when the government tells the private sector what to do. Communism is when the government takes over the private sector.

What's happening right now (started in Oct 08) is government telling the private sector what to do. It's quasi-fascist. Of course it's not good for the economy but guess whose really pushing it? Pelosi/Reid/Obama.

  • thats because the private sector has skrewed the global economy over.

government action is necessary when the private sector is on the verge of collapse

  • There are different takes on fascism. It could equally be argued that fascism is when powerful entities in the private sector take over government to the detriment of democratic processes and principles. The end-results of fascism and communism aren't all that dissimilar; a small, self-serving elite to whom the common man means little or nothing. The US has developed a system of fascism that is unique and sophisticated, yet ultimately just as rotten and pernicious as has ever existed.

  • There is one definition of Fascism. Look it up, you sound like a fool.

  • You sound even worse, you sound like a Patriot (note; large P)

  • No, I sound like someone that is tired of people making up there own definitions to words that have already been defined to serve their distorted world view.

  • Hitler's Germany, Mussolini's Italy, Franco's Spain and the Colonels Greece were all Fascist states, and none of them had exactly the same political model, things evolve. As for a militarist making accusations of a distorted world view, excuse me while I split a gut. Now go and troll another thread.

  • They all had the one thing necessary to be called fascist save Greece which was a military junta. They where all ONE party states with absolute power residing in one individual that will only give it up with force.

  • Italy was fascist, the others were not.

  • I dont think giving the banks as much money as they want is telling them what to do. Banks even refused to take any money until they got it with no strings attached(like limitations on executives boni).

  • What are you gonna do about it besides bitching?

  • I saw it coming,

  • LOL'ing at the four kids with that laughter one reserves for seeing stereotypes fulfilled.

Aside from the compassion one feels for any human being in trouble, why are these people especially deserving of our sympathy?

The same thing is happening here in California, except our unemployment rate is far higher, and we have all the border problems and immigration problems on top of that.

With all due respect for the good folks at Journeyman, I don't see this story as particularly newsworthy.

  • I'm from Ireland, and you have absolutely no idea how bad unemployment is getting and how horrible our government is handling this crisis. Ireland is the worst effected country to be hit by the economic crisis in the E.U.

I can't say that we deserve any sympathy though. Our population elected this government 3 times even though the fecked up the last 10 years in office. Everyone seems to get drunk off their tits before going into the voting booth.... and drunk every other night, of course

  • California is probably deserving of special attention, after all, it's where all the movie stars are, the poor old rest of the world probably should just continue not to matter.

  • You don't like what's happening in California. I have some advice. Stop voting for the democrats! Detroit, DC, California. Every time the Democrats get control of something, they run it into the ground!

  • lol the last 8 years killed america /facepalm

  • How so?

  • just like bush did in the last 8 years??

  • Oh, you mean that $17 trillion economy?

  • When you use 'one' you sound even more pompous. Keep up the good work. You come across as a really clever DUDE. But one digresses...
