At times it was and Empire because Haiti controlled parts of the D.R. during Dessalines' reign. However, then the French came back and occupied D.R. and were planning on enslaving Haitians from there. Then Dessalines tried to take over the whole country, but eventually turned back to protect Haiti from a French ship he thought was headed there. That is how the parts of the D.R. he controlled were lost. It was not a large empire, but it was an empire.

From what I read Dessalines invaded the Dominican Republic because the French gov. that was in control of the country had given the soldiers permission to enslave Haitians. His invasion was a sort of a
preemptive strike.

haiti is a majority black. haitians are proud to resemble their african ancestors. that was the goal of the whole dessalines's movement to turn haiti into in all black country.

well, it's pretty clear to me now that u don't know anything about the man and history. u r debating on emotion not the facts and i really don't have time for that. i put this video on here for the people who admire and respect the man not to convince anyone into like him. he is a hero to a lot of people and this video is a dedication to all the dessalines's lovers out there.

his intent was never kill dominicans. he went there to secure that side of the island against any attempt of a french invasion of haiti but on his way there he met a lot of resistance by the dominicans. so, had no choice but to fight back for the sake of preserving the freedom n liberty of his people. see, u not a leader and it's hard for u to understand da mind set of one. as a leader, it's all about what u can do to protect and uplift ur people regardless of the risk involved in doing so.

dessallines massacre of the french was more like a political strategy instead of ethnic cleansing. the french were trying to reinstate slavery four years after it was abolished in haiti. dessallines himself was a slave until in his early thirties. do u think he would wanna go back to being a slave. out of fear that the french would use it as a base for the invasion of haiti.u never been a slave so u can't relate to his anger and fear of being a slave again.

dessalines did not hate all whites. he only killed the french. there were a lot of british and an americans who lived peacefully in haiti under his administration. so stop believing about these made up stories u been reading about and listen to facts. as far trujillos massacrering haitian, that is the most self hatred thing i've ever heard. did u know his grand mother was haitian and he was a shamed of his dark complexion to the point where he wore light make up to hide it? is this ur hero?

n as far as dessalines killing dominicans, that is so untrue. these dominicans that died were soldiers in uniforms who stood againts dessalines in order to protect spain's intrest and prevent dessallines from achieving his goals. Dessalines did not die becuzz he was a murderer. he died bcuzz he was trying to distribute da wealth fairly among his people n some of the people with the high privileges couldn't take that. Dessalines is my hero. if i could have 1% of wisdom in me, i would be grateful
