Its a great tune..Im a fan of Peter Murphy but its funny hearing his tendition of atmosphere.......Hookey was working the door at the Hacienda once and turned Peter away....Peter responded "do you know who I am, Im the singer for Bauhaus!" Hookey replied "and Im the bassist for New Order"....just a funny tid bit, at least to me. He and Johnny Rotten have both been quoted as saying New Order are money grubbing swine.....or something close to that anyway. Whatever...I dont care.
this song seems to come from so far away doesn't it?
It has a very 'spacial" feeling, do you agree?
there's a band from the 80s, very big in Brazil, that has a few songs like JD, even the singing... one of those is "Tempo Perdido" , also one of their greates hits (the band is "Legião urbana", "Urban Legion").
Let's not get too precious. Ian Curtis was by no stretch of the imagination a great singer; great lyricist without doubt but not a great vocalist. The studio version of this was probably his very best vocal performance. When Murphy cuts out the silliness (rarely) he is actually a good singer. Trent Reznor; well, the less said about him the better!
@emile235 I disagree! What was anti popular music about "Love will tear us apart"? As for being anti entertainment, I don't know what you mean, perhaps you can elaborate! I do however agree that the fact that Curtis couldn't really sing wasn't important. On certain tracks he used his voice to very good effect and that is all that matters. I was not criticising him as a "singer", merely pointing out what should be obvious to any objectively minded person.
this song reminds me of driving to Manchester with my dad. He told me that when he was younger he missed out on the chance of seeing Ian Curtis and Sid Vicious play the same show, He would never get to see any of them alive ever again. When he heard Nine Inch Nails were playing for the last time he brought me tickets for 3 of the shows: Manchester, London and Sonisphere. This song is a reminder to me that we shouldn;t miss out on oppurtunities
ponderous. boring. adds nothing. just takes away the magic....turns a beautiful mysterious song into a pretentious piece of deep meaninglessness....if you are going to cover a song...then bring something of your self to it.....other wise why bother?
It's only an 'h.' Who cares? Love both people, sincerely, and wasn't going to listen to this. Covers, most times, peeve one off - Placebo do enough and yet, are a splenid band - however, an empathetic and lovely cover. Why the video of 'Atmosphere?'
This sogn will always remind me of my dad letting me go to see Nine Inch Nails- he said 'never miss anything. When I was 15 I decided to study for my term exam, a pointless exam. I missed seeign Sid Vicious and Ian Curtis on the same stage- don't miss Trent Reznor'
with Reznor being the name of Syrian royalty and Murphy being originally from Turkey, it would seem this song would be the great Arabic music gig, especially given the theme of the song
i really do appreciate this and the dead souls covers there fantastic, I think trent is one of the onyl guys who really knows the music of ian well enough to cover it well enough
Peter Murphy does a great job on the vocals, and I like this take. The original will always be there, and those complaining about the 'cash grab', well it's not as if Joy Division covers a sure fire way to fame and fortune.
Besides... if Trent's involvement exposes younger listeners to some great music like Joy Division and Bauhaus, more power to 'em.
I never thought I would like ANY cover of this song, man was I wrong ! JD is my favorite band, and Trent and PM did a wonderful job. Atmosphere is so beautiful. Thank you boys, you made my day.........
The point is that what makes Joy Division so unique and special (to some of us, anyway), is that they were so ephemeral and short-lived that they didn't have a chance to get ruined by crass commercialism. They were broke, and incredibly real.
Listening to Trent Reznor, talented as he is, making more money out of their music than they ever did is pretty freaking awful.
Maybe, but I doubt either Reznor or Bowie were hurting for cash when they did this. They've made their fourtunes already. Whatever music either of them does anymore is out of their love of music itself.
Peter Murphy on his very own registry - not worse than the original by Ian Curtis but so much different and so good aswell ...

Indeed. Reznor & Bowie demonstrate both respect & understanding in the way that they *didn't* change anything in the cover.

Yes, but the point is not to sound like Joy Division. The point is to take the song and to make it their own.
