Bert is the coolest cat. I mean the guy is just so f**king cool. I would have loved to have seen The Pentangle back at this time. I love Bert's solo stuff too. He really was the closest thing to Dylan outside of Dylan himself. The Scottish Dylan, or was Dylan the American Bert?
@juliedog464 Just wonderful time warp stuff from Pentangle and Jaquie looks really enchanting!!,,,,Just how much of their work is hidden away in the vaults?
Surprised this ain't out on dvd yet.The BBC have 100's if not 1000's of hours of superb and expertly filmed/recorded music squirrled away.....apparently!
@double531 I remember the BBC series Take Three Girls contained incidental music by Pentangle(some of the best I have ever heard)......perhaps this has been lost forever!!
@DaveSquarey08 .....Dave I remember the telly series well, but I am sure this concert footage is still kicking about the vaults at the Beeb, why it has never been released as a dvd for Pentangle fans,God knows. The picture and audio quality is excellent.
He's Danny Thompson, one of the absolute best upright bassists to ever come out of England. If you read your album credits carefully, you'll notice he's been around in all kinds places, in particular on the work of Richard Thompson. I had the pleasure of running live sound for those two guys at a performance (just the two of them, no less) and it was amazing. Danny is a man of few words, as his stage demeanor sort of suggests. I wish I had tried talking with him more, though.
Funny how no one mentions that incredibly talented bass player!!
I've been listening to the Pentangle since Cruel Sister and Basket of Light were new and never really noticed until I saw these videos. The man is AMAZING.
I hate that this is one of the main points in my comment on such a LOVELY song from such a LOVELY band, but I just can't help to think about how extriemely hot Jansch is! Combined with he's wonderful voice performing wonderful music - argh, I love him!
why thanx A-D! Now if we could only get them to do the pentango once again here in the states, not that would be pure bliss, giving reason for a new holiday, to be named Blissmas on the day they 1st play the USA.
how the fuck does Bert manage to do that insane picking, and sing and harmonize so effortlessly? The guys possessed!
Brilliant track from a great album. Jacqui..was there ever a voice so pure? only Annie Briggs and Sandy Denny stand up to the mighty Mcshees vocal prowess.
you know I've only heard Renaisance once at a stoned party years ago, and the thing that stuck in my mind was that the guy singing was Keith Relf from the Yardbirds, off whom I am a huge fan. So maybe it's time for me to check out some Renaisance. So you could be right. I forgot to mention June Tabor and Norma Watterson..but when it comes to female singers, none compare to the mighty Nina Simone..different style but what a natural. Cheers for the reply, keep listening to the good music...anthony
Bet this guy ran a recording studio for some B+ music school w/ a ton of admirers. Good w/ the lights. Look even during that ezcellent solo by SOMEONE ELSE they gotta focus one pretty boy. Amazing how many groups never made it because of the demand for pretty boys at the helm. And I'm an old pretty boy.
Just heard that the original line-up reformed - albeit briefly - for the BBC Folk on 2 Awards 2007, where they won a Lifetime Achievement Award. For me, they redefined the very purpose of music. May their light shine forever.
Fond memories.. this is from their Basket of Light album, which was my first Pentangle-Bert Jansch purchase. I still have it, along with others, in mint condition. Thanks Fawnface.
I think I have this video. I bought it a while back, its mainly focused on John but it shows some of his performances with Pentangle. Might be I got it at Zulu Records. John played once at the WISE Hall or the Rogue Folk Club in '96 I think. He also played at the Folk Music Festival in 98.
Don't believe he has graces our presense here in Vancouver, Canada for a while. I hate myself for missing him the times i knew about it.
Hell, I'm not Catholic but I'd send a few Hail Fawnies your way for this milady. I never thought I'd ever see Pentangle again. Thank you! Would January 15th be ok to petition Rome as St Fawn's day?

They have such a tight pocket that it almost seems like they are using a loop pedal near the end. lol. That was incredible. :D

Pentangle came from Jazz backgrounds and the rhythms on Basket of Light are all jazz rhythms.

Yeah, she totally wishes she was Sandy Denny. Copies her vocal style across the board.
Bert Jansch is a genius, though. The best parts of "Sunshine Superman" owe alot to him.
cjwynes 2 years ago
Niether Denny or McShee invented this vocal style. It goes back, way back. Both ladies are wonderful in my book.

I don`tknow if somebody ever called this kind of music " FOLK JAZZ", or JAZZ FOLK" ?
I don't really care about classifications in every kind of music , cause for me is music simply MUSIC !!!

But the band was orignally around from 67 to 73 :)
