i would buy a canon 1DX or a nikon D4 instead of the m9. this is why: I want a camera thats rugged and performs awesome. i think that the 1DX is much better than the m9 in terms of performance
I shoot a Hassleblad because when I do a wedding, chances of a guest bringing one at the reception is zero. I also shoot with it because of the Carl Zeiss lens to which Leica also used.
exactly you do not buy a Leica because of the photo result, because if you did you would not touch it. You buy it so you can walk down the street saying "look at me" look at me" "look at me"
@dipmvideos if you're doing street photography, you don't have to have a huge camera like a Canon 1D or a Nikon D3, a nice small M9 does the same thing but looks much less scary or embarrassing to people you're taking pictures of.
@SteveThePorter That point has been brought up, and I get that, but that doesn't mean you cant you a huge camera to do street photography. Like I said before, there have been very great street photography work that was taken with medium and large format cameras!
@dipmvideos Thats true but it does make it easier. A nice small camera is less likely to draw much attention and generally easier to get through crowds with because you don't have a large camera to deal with. I shoot with DSLR's all the time in San Diego and street photography has never been much of an issue for me, but I know that it is easier to work in a crowded space if you have a smaller camera. I agree that a DSLR or medium format will work but rangefinders are generally better for street.
@1440hk No you buy it so you can enjoy owning it. It's like buying a high end Swiss watch. Most people wouldn't know, but you would. It's a luxury brand. They are also optically the best. For the purists out there, nothing beats them for picture quality.
And come on..a lot of the greatest masters of photography shot with leica and keep saying that you cannot replace this camera.
Of course it depends of which type of photography you want to do. But Leica is not just something expensive and useless that you buy just for vanity. If you buy it for vanity, you'll never get what's the soul of that camera.
@frafra91 At this point, people who look at buying a leica look way past the photography (results) aspect of it. For most, it's about the camera and using it. Not about the results.
look for the vid on youtube "How to NOT use a Leica"
i know that's an extreme example, but you know, there's a lot of people who just buy leica because they think they are cool, and in that vid there is the result.
@frafra91 lol i've never seen that video. funny. But in all seriousness, do you really think people actually pay for purely the photographs you get with a Leica? No way. There are SOME pros that use Leicas, but they could very well do the same with an SLR, or other types of camera.
I think it's related to the tiny size of the camera and the great quality that you can have. I think it's almost all about the size. And yes, there is also the great feeling to holding a leica
@dipmvideos Again, it's a great tool, but definitely not needed. Just like I said about the watches. They do "feel" better and "look" better, cost thousands more, but they just tell time.
So the feel argument, doesn't support what you said at all, because that "feel" applies to those who you said don't use Leica properly. They get them because of the feel of holding one and owning one, not necessarily for the photos they get.
are you kidding, saying that with a slr camera you can get the same or the better result????
People of course don't get a rangefinder to shoot fashion. But for street photography? The leica is so small, so silent and so great to do that. No way you can do the same stuff with an slr, especially digital ones.
@frafra91 Lol. Of course you can use slrs for street photography. Some people use gigantic polaroid cameras and medium format cameras for street photography. You obviously haven't seen some of the greats. You can get the job done for MUCH cheaper than a leica, you cant argue that.
@dipmvideos (as street photography I mean the "decisive moment" kind of shots)
anyway, i think it's useless keep arguing because it's a very personal issue.
I could not use big dslr cameras, as for example 5d, for street photography as I can use a leica (which i don't own, but i rent it from my school). And I think a lot "serious" Leica owners would say that. But it's just personal, i can't say anything else. I've just a question...Have you ever used a Leica? that's critical.
@frafra91 I have handled them, but i've never really used them for a long period of time. That being said, I have used many rangefinders, and own a Canonet which I use frequently these days. Like you said, its a matter of preference, I was just saying that Leica are not needed in todays world. Sure, they can be great tools, but they're definitely not needed. I'm only making this statement because of how expensive they are.
there are a lot of great photographers who still think that leica is unique. Look at Alex Webb for example.
But again, I don't want to argue. But just don't think that Leicas are done, or are just used by rich bored people. And actually you can get an M6 with a wonderful lens for around 3000 in a very good shape. Ok, that's the last post. peace
YOU FOOL!!! THAT WATCH ANALOGY WAS EXCELLENT!!! I have 3 Leicas. M2/M6/R7. I only have 1 Leica lens, the 35 R f/2.8. My M lens is a Nippon Kogaku LTM with a permanent bayonet. Keep hammering eBay. You'll find something that is just awesome.
some good points said....if you do have the money for it, then go for it, but I think its meant to be for the die hard photographer, and if you do it for a living and get paid a butt load of cash of for what you do...if its for true PASSION and art of it all I think that's why photographers will get one, and Leica's encompass that of photography, 'a Leica is something you buy with your heart, not with your head' - Kai (Digital Rev) well said Kai...well said

It's a way more than having a Rolex watch instead of simple watch, because it's not just about beautiful design or photographer's position in the society. It's a tool of creation! This way - not only the optics quality that causes creating amazing imagery after all! It's a quality inside of our thoughts, about which we care the whole life long and Leica is a great helper in this journey :)
I think Leica is about the true care, about optimizing feeling to the very verge of possibility... it's about growing and about thriving. When we lead a healthy way of life, we're optimizing our health - we're experiencing joy of feeling physically great then and this way living life to the fullest. When we use Leica (or dream using it) - we experience joy of creation to the fullest.
Well real Leica are the film Leica ;'D and they are not that expensive today ^.^ m3 and a summilux , might set you back 2-3k ;'D Bargain bin Price for a Leica.
And no SLR system is not superior to Rangefinder, because its not as accurate especially when using lens thats 1.4 or lower. Thats why SLR lenses now days only has f1.4
And no images produce by modern DSLR is nothing compare to a Leica, pretty much because Leica lenses are just that amazing, for what you get,Leica prices are pretty good.
@zhemin i did mention that leicas have the sharpest glass, but i talked more about practicality in this video. you get way more out of DSLRs these days and for a lot cheaper. I don't personally know of any professionals that use rangefinders primarily. The ones i know who own leicas use them only for personal shooting. Summilux also have never been cheap :P
Wetzlar, Ernst said, "Leica, schmeica. The camera doesn't make a bit of difference. All of them can record what you are seeing. But, you have to SEE."
@muddyclouds - That is my point, its not bout the images its about being seen with the Leica badge around your neck. Unfortunately many people think that the person with the Bling around his neck is a expert, in most cases its not the case. Because of the limitations of Leica in terms of speed they just don't work well for most production photographers. Plus they are just to Damn expensive all things considers.
@ActivityPhoto: Well that wasn't my point at all. Im the guy who totally unlikes attention. I don't care for expensive watches or cars. I'd say it's far more show-off bringing your big bulky DSLR and a big lens. Steels much more attention and some people will believe your a pro, no matter how unskilled you are. The only way people would know this is a Leica(if they even know what that is) is putting it straight under there nose. I wouldn't. So in my opinion your'e totally wrong.
Nice video. FYI Leica Rangefinders are formulated for better image quality. The engineering of Rangefinders allow lenses to sit much closer to the film plane, so lenses can be made with optimized optical formulas (formulas that can't be employed in larger lenses that sit further away from the film plane, like SLR camera lenses) So the Rangefinder technology and lenses allow for highly increased sharpness and clarity.
All this talk about Leicas this and Leicas that. Ask yourself when was the last award winning imagine shot with a Leica? When was a Leica last used to capture the winning touchdown at an NFL game.
Leica cameras like rolex watches are beautiful pieces of manufactured product, but end the end, there are far better choices for some one that needs a versatile and reliable tool for the Photography trade.
Why do people buy them? It's called SNOB Appeal. Photo journalist are not artistic photographers, to them it all about getting the imagine and not so much what it looks like from a style POV. They used to use Leica because of their size.
@hello1234172 wow strong statement. so you're saying i dont have a passion for photography? i would counter that by saying that someone who doesnt care for what kind of camera he has and just takes photos with whatever they have has a true passion for photography. and why can i not say i can't afford one when i really cant?
@dipmvideos My post did not clearly show what I was trying to explain, for this I am sorry. You can be photographer with a camera phone, and love what you do. what I am saying is that even if you have the best camera phone in the whole world, a Leica will make you as an artist feel something different inside. That is why, when people that have never used a Leica before try to compare it to a camera that cost less, and is nechnically better I get a little frustrated. A Leica is a camera of art.
@hello1234172 still disagree. its never the camera. who is to say a leica is a true photographer/artis camera? i guess it does "make you feel like an artist", but so does using a lomo camera, or in todays world, a film camera. leica users are who gave the leica brand that image. in part, its really to justify the expensive cost of it. its really just a luxury. in the end, its just another camera.
@hello1234172 Only if the person behind the lens knows what to do with it. A skilled photographer can make a memorable image using and camera. It sounds to me like you are hung up on the what costs more is always better, which in this case, the camera is only a tool the PHOTOGRAPHER uses.. Do you think that a carpenter can build a better house if he uses a 5000.00 hammer instead of a 5.00 hammer., no of course not.
@hello1234172 moronic comment of the day... you're 16 and you have a leica, great. Explain how you came about to 9 grand for a body / lens combo? I know a lot of kids who's parents front cash for all sorts of stuff, but dont come here touting that you have a leica blah blah blah until you prove you paid for every cent of it.
I am a construction worker, I work on night jobs every single day of the weak, excluding Sunday. Not only that but I have saved every dam penny I make. My parents are divorced, and no longer in the picture. I have worked hard to create the life I live, and that is something i'm proud of.
I liked the analogy with the watches. Yes you can have a Casio and it will get the job done or you can have a Rolex.. The Leica is like a Rolex. A beautiful piece of craftsmanship that is a little more fun to carry around. Don't own one myself but I hope I will someday.
@muddyclouds Only if such BS impresses you and they people you hang with. The proof is in the what the product can actually do. While there is some true to the statement that Leica cameras take better pictures, mostly that is because of their VERY expensive glass. End the end most that own Leica camera are people with more money than sense and just like having the very best of everything regardless if they have the skills and talents to take advantage of what the camera can do.
Wow, that was a pretty aggressive comment. No the people I hang with (that you don't know) wouldn't understand If I got a camera this expensive. I wouldn't tell them unless they noticed. If they started being silly about I would just ask how much their cars and dogs costs them on a yearly basis. I have neither. A Leica camera is a dream of mine. Have been interested in photography for over 25 years. I wouldn't take better pictures with it, I know. It's not about that.
Their is alot of cars that can go just as fast, steer just a good and they will get to your destination. but Leicas & Ferraris posses a quality & Craftsmanship which you will not find anywhere else.
Leicas also have a edge in terms of aperture , lens distortion etc.
Sure, you can live without them but you'll sure to enjoy having one in your life.
and some watches tell the time better!!!! Maybe the boy would have done better to research the history of Leica going back over the last hundred years or so.
Your 'take' on Leica is not really worth the screen time you have taken up.
@welis184211 hmm. i have a ver expensive omega speedmaster and i do not own it for the time. in fact, it falls back fractions of a second ever so often, so you will eventually need to adjust the time. you will not get this problem with a 50 dollar battery powered digital watch. same with leicas and dslrs. the leica is more expensive and less practical, but you dont get it just for the fact that it takes photos. peace.
PS - was at Calumet last week - Fuji rep could hardly hold himself back - the X200 (or X1000) with interchangeable lenses - fast primes etc will be out early next year
The sharpness edge to edge wide open from Leica is incredible. They HAVE the widest fast aperture wide angle lens in the world,& last a life time. The fastest aspherical Lens available on this planet. Back to build quality;saying that DSLR are cheaper can be tricky because lets say you the Flagship from Nikon which is 5000$this camera will never last a lifetime, so you will have to buy it twice,5000x2=10000=Leica M9(6999)+leica 50mm /2 Summicron(sharpest 50mm on earth,1999)=9000 & last a lifetime

@Leicashooter45 yup, i know their sharper. its about practicality though. the dslr will get the job done faster most of the time. i agree with you though, which is why i want a leica myself ;)
@Leicashooter45 I don't really agree on that. Because the Leica M9 is a digital camera. And for now 18mp is enough but in 20 years it will probably get behind a lot of resolutions and high ISO low noise technologies. What what if the Leica M10? I bet it's better than the M9. I don't think that digital camera's can last a life time. Only film can. Because the quality of film haven't degraded, only improved. Leica film camera can last a life time. + you can by a lot of rolls with the saved money .
Hey man, like your videos But i've been shooting with Nikon and Leica for more then 20 years now, well you're right about the fact that DSLR's are better for commercial work, but in terms of image quality,LEICA are the best out there i owned high-end Nikon lenses(The best lenses that Nikon offers). But Leica lenses are much better wide open then Canon or Nikon.Leica uses the best glass available on this planet thats why the price of Leica are so high, not to mention the build quality!Comment part 1.
For practicality, you buy a minivan. But nobody really lusts for a minivan. A practicality of a vintage Ferrari is zero. And yet, they are very desirable.
I know the name from the past "Does it have better Optics" ? In my book a big waste of money. I would not spend a dime on one. Don't get me wrong, for a reasonable price yes I would like to try one. There is a real test going on for "Optics and image sensors" The Japanese are the best at this in my view. I think Nikon has been with NASA since the 1970's, I'm a Canon shooter.. I believe they work together in an presuppose way.
when i watch this vid..the first thing came out from my head are the words of wisdom that my teacher once told me...
"having a DSLR does not mean that you are a photographer......you are not a photographer, you just having an overprices camera.....a photographer is people that can freeze the moment, story and feeling trough the his @ her picture..."
I totally understand the wristwatch analogy. I got a TAG Heuer Aquaracer for my birthday a few years ago, and even though it tells the time, just like a cheaper watch does, there is something nice about the fact that you have a nice watch that will last a lifetime. I found my mom's old Nikon Nikkormat EL SLR camera today, so I am currently in the process of trying to figure out how it works, or even if it still works. Would have been sweet if I had found an old Leica...
Leica is a name for Highest Quality and Built for a Lifetime. I grew up with the idea that the german products are the best. My father give me a Voigtländer Bessamatic when I was a child and for long time I was wishing to own a Leica.
Today with technology advances all the time improvements on cameras. I feel that a Leica camera will end up as a collector item.
I know that 4 years from now I will look for the newest camera, and again 4 years after that.
@spascalin true. when i look at leica cameras right now, i really look at the film cameras. i'd love to one day own a Leica MP or a M6 panda, as well as a few lenses. even just a 35 would make me really content.
Leica is something you buy with your heart not with your head.

ActivityPhoto 3 months ago

ActivityPhoto 3 months ago
@ActivityPhoto
well...a great part of the history of photography was written by the Leica rangefinder...
then...if you are interested in capturing the winning touchdown...yes, buy your dslr with a big zoom.
Maybe people here are missing a point: what you want to shoot.
That makes a huuuge difference.
frafra91 2 months ago
Why do people buy them? It's called SNOB Appeal. Photo journalist are not artistic photographers, to them it all about getting the imagine and not so much what it looks like from a style POV. They used to use Leica because of their size.

Only a person that has used a Leica has experienced the true passion of photography, any one that says otherwise has never used one.
Im 16, and I own a Leica, never say you cant afford it.

So your saying that people who do not use leica never experience the true passion for photography. All that coming from a 16 year old.

@hello1234172 wow strong statement. so you're saying i dont have a passion for photography? i would counter that by saying that someone who doesnt care for what kind of camera he has and just takes photos with whatever they have has a true passion for photography. and why can i not say i can't afford one when i really cant?
dipmvideos 3 months ago 6
@dipmvideos My post did not clearly show what I was trying to explain, for this I am sorry. You can be photographer with a camera phone, and love what you do. what I am saying is that even if you have the best camera phone in the whole world, a Leica will make you as an artist feel something different inside. That is why, when people that have never used a Leica before try to compare it to a camera that cost less, and is nechnically better I get a little frustrated. A Leica is a camera of art.
hello1234172 3 months ago
@hello1234172 still disagree. its never the camera. who is to say a leica is a true photographer/artis camera? i guess it does "make you feel like an artist", but so does using a lomo camera, or in todays world, a film camera. leica users are who gave the leica brand that image. in part, its really to justify the expensive cost of it. its really just a luxury. in the end, its just another camera.
dipmvideos 3 months ago 2
@dipmvideos Amen, exactly.
ActivityPhoto 3 months ago
@hello1234172 also, i'm not bashing you for having one! :P I myself want one. I just disagree with what you said. nothing personal at all!
dipmvideos 3 months ago
@hello1234172 Only if the person behind the lens knows what to do with it. A skilled photographer can make a memorable image using and camera. It sounds to me like you are hung up on the what costs more is always better, which in this case, the camera is only a tool the PHOTOGRAPHER uses.. Do you think that a carpenter can build a better house if he uses a 5000.00 hammer instead of a 5.00 hammer., no of course not.
ActivityPhoto 3 months ago

Don't own one myself but I hope I will someday.
muddyclouds 3 months ago
@muddyclouds Only if such BS impresses you and they people you hang with. The proof is in the what the product can actually do. While there is some true to the statement that Leica cameras take better pictures, mostly that is because of their VERY expensive glass. End the end most that own Leica camera are people with more money than sense and just like having the very best of everything regardless if they have the skills and talents to take advantage of what the camera can do.
ActivityPhoto 3 months ago
@ActivityPhoto

Leica is like a precious object I want to have one but in Portugal they are very expensive that is why I will be shipping one from the UK.
Very nice vid ,show me a camera that has the same quality?, the leica lens are expensive but they have a amazing built quality and fabulous pict.
Cont with the good work!

Leicas are the Ferraris of Camera in my opinion.

Peace
welis184211 4 months ago
@welis184211 hmm. i have a ver expensive omega speedmaster and i do not own it for the time. in fact, it falls back fractions of a second ever so often, so you will eventually need to adjust the time. you will not get this problem with a 50 dollar battery powered digital watch. same with leicas and dslrs. the leica is more expensive and less practical, but you dont get it just for the fact that it takes photos. peace.

Just how much has the value of Leica M9 dropped since the M9 P came out ?
LOTS & LOTS & LOTS & LOTS & LOTS & LOTS & LOTS & LOTS & LOTS & LOTS
At least enough to buy at least two Fuji X100 !
PS - was at Calumet last week - Fuji rep could hardly hold himself back - the X200 (or X1000) with interchangeable lenses - fast primes etc will be out early next year
Can't wait!

@Leicashooter45 yup, i know their sharper. its about practicality though. the dslr will get the job done faster most of the time. i agree with you though, which is why i want a leica myself ;)
dipmvideos 4 months ago

Leicashooter45 5 months ago
you pay for quality. sadly I can't afford that much quality :-P

I believe they work together in an presuppose way.
gerald2003r 6 months ago
@gerald2003r leicas do technically have the best optics. they beat out canon and nikon.

when i watch this vid..the first thing came out from my head are the words of wisdom that my teacher once told me...
"having a DSLR does not mean that you are a photographer......you are not a photographer, you just having an overprices camera.....a photographer is people that can freeze the moment, story and feeling trough the his @ her picture..."
tikusjamban 6 months ago

I know that 4 years from now I will look for the newest camera, and again 4 years after that.
spascalin 6 months ago
@spascalin true. when i look at leica cameras right now, i really look at the film cameras. i'd love to one day own a Leica MP or a M6 panda, as well as a few lenses. even just a 35 would make me really content.
