such a smooth piece of funk. just love the flute in funk tracks. beautiful. this LP and The Popcorn are his best works imho. 1969 was a very good year for Mr Brown. QUALITY (yes, with a capital for each letter!) xx
Apparently this is a heavily edited recording. The original runs for about 12 or 13 min if I'm not mistaken, according to the liner notes in the recent CD compilation of his singles.
When hear this groove it takes me to SOUL.... Collard Greens, conebread...not cornbread but conebread, red beans and rice.... smothered steak....Soul baby!!
Another great song by the Godfather of Soul. Don't remember hearing this one. Probably was the "B" side of Mother Popcorn in the jukebox. If I never heard it, it's new to me. Fantastic post.
In the words of the great Albert King "If you don't dig the Blues you got a hole in your soul" . The same thing goes for Soul / Low Down Funk, R.I.P Soul Brother Number 1.
Another bad tune by James. I first heard this tune in a work by John Popper, the harmonic player. To my surprise, Popper's is a sample from this song, see John Popper Project-Lapdance here on Youtube.
This was sampled as a beat on one of djqberts breakbeat records. I think it was on 100MPH Back Sliding Turkey Kuts. either that or one of the needle thrashers
Damn it would of been crazy to see James Brown, Stevie Wonder and Jimi Hendrix get together.. That would of change put funk on a whole different level. Guess it wasnt meant to be in this life time.
Had this album as a 9yo child. Played the grooves off of it. Mom got mad when I scratched it. Dad just laughed and went on playin' it. A flood of memories just seeing the cover art and hearing this rare groove. Thanks.
I'm at the party now just listening to this album cut. You could put on any James brown cut to your party started and it was hard to take him off the box, because he had so many new 45s out at the same time, and the part 2 too!!.this cut you slip on just before you put on the slow drags for the late crowd. yall kids don't know about the slow drag( grind tunes)
please put 'out of sight'' from this album. this was my first album. jackson 5 my second. i played this jb album for 25 years until the album warped. after a flooding in a college dorm.
damn right. . . This too was my first album and my second album was "ABC" by Jackson 5, and my 3rd album was Psychodelic Shack by Temps. . . you're right on brother. I was a little 8 year old kid runnin' around the Bronx with my Sax; and I was destined to be a funkateer myself..... Played with funk bands upstate NY - Newburgh, Monticello, Middletown, Washingtonville, Fallsburgh with the band ECSTASY yes, I'm 50 now, but check my videos. . .sax, bass and drums
Thanks sssoooo much for sharing!!! I mean you you really took us there, awesome flute, organ, guitar, bass, drums, the instrumentals are just off the hook!!! That funky J. B. SOUND, GODFATHER OF SOUL FOR REAL!!! Again, I thank you for posting.
Let a Man come in and do the Popcorn and "The Popcorn" will always be my two favorites. all the other songs by him are just the ones I like the best!! :-0
Groove on James! Heaven can probably use some of that soul you brought up there to them.
ive got this album, in fact i think? ive got every album he and family of musicians and singers made from 1966-1980 . I never needed drugs just this funk firing my neurons and restructuring my dna.good luck all
this is my very first album!!! i still have it. it is just in horrible condition. : ( can you put this albums version of "out of sight" on you tube please??
This album is reissued. The vinyl reissue is cheap, I've seen it for 9 bucks unopened. The CD reissue however, different story..japanese reissue..25 bucks and up if you can find one.
this is the first album i've ever owned. i must have played this LP 10,000 time. Sadly, it is too scratched to enjoy anymore. Please put more of this album on you tube. this album has a killer version of "out of sight". cheers!

I believe Brand Nubians sampled this in "Who Can Get Funky Like This Man" on their first album; correct me if I'm wrong.
IramoMcFilled 11 months ago
From the period that James Brown experimented with jazz and acid-rock styled recordings (roughly 1968 through his 1971 switch to Polydor).
