He wrote the lyrics using a biblical reference while throwing down dollar bills in a strip joint. Anything else is added by individual interpretation, i.e. a guess.
You know some people say it's about organized religion but in my opinion it sounds like the songs about being hypnotized by a certain strippers dancing. Just listen to the lyrics people you would know what i'm talking about.
Basically, I think the song is about how people fall into organized religion so easily. They pay one dollar at a time. This could be looked at literaly (when a minister demands money for the church), or on a metaphorical leval (religion starts to take over their values). At the start of the song, "overcome by the holiest of the altars" could describe how much the person is sold by the church. This person is selling their soul to experience a taste of the "holy."
@HellDevil75 Plus, when people state that Magdelena means cupcake in Spanish, I think that is a nice metaphor for organized religion. It looks and tastes nice on top with all the sprinkles and frosting, but once your done with what you taste first, you soon realize that the whole cupcake does not taste like that. The whole cupcake, or organized religion, is not actually as pure as good as first shown. This is just my interpertation anyway.

Basically, I think the song is about how people fall into organized religion so easily. They pay one dollar at a time. This could be looked at literaly (when a minister demands money for the church), or on a metaphorical leval (religion starts to take over their values). At the start of the song, "overcome by the holiest of the altars" could describe how much the person is sold by the church. This person is selling their soul to experience a taste of the "holy."

@HellDevil75 Plus, when people state that Magdelena means cupcake in Spanish, I think that is a nice metaphor for organized religion. It looks and tastes nice on top with all the sprinkles and frosting, but once your done with what you taste first, you soon realize that the whole cupcake does not taste like that. The whole cupcake, or organized religion, is not actually as pure as good as first shown. This is just my interpertation anyway.

magdalene may mean cupcake, but that just makes it a cute name for a girl child, who then became the Magdalene in the Bible, who this song is based on. i don't think you can read meaning into the name itself.

And really, most regligions try to seem all sweet and friendly, speaking of the afterlife and how amazing it is and their ever loving God and being kind to other humans. But all religions have more to it than that - the parts that AREN'T so nice and fluffy.
