They also bumped ABC's Sat. 8-9 PM offering(s) in favor of something else (wanna say Star Trek TNG, but not positive)...the network shows were picked up by Worchester independent WHLL (which also carried the 1990 revival of Match Game, another network show WCVB declined to carry, though many ABC affiliates did the same b/c of its 12 noon "death slot").
To think that ABC didn't learn about the impossibility of scheduling network programs at noon in modern times, after they ran Ryan's Hope into the ground at 12PM.
Yeah, really...after MG '90, they expanded the low-rated Home Show to 90 min(!) before finally giving the noon slot back to their affils in the fall of 93.
The intro would last until November sweeps, 1993. It was replaced by the remix of the "Big News" theme package and the New England-themed blue backgrounds with the swirling titles, logos, and so forth.
Thanks that's what I thought. The blue New England backgrounds was the last package with Ernie Anderson voiceovers. It lasted until November 1995 when the Hearst-Argyle look kicked in.
Interesting how they used to pre-empt ABC's Fri. 9:30 (EST) primetime offering for a rerun of the Cosby Show...have relatives in Newport, RI, and recalled thinking "huh?" when I saw it listed in TVG.
This was back when the 6pm news was one hour. Oprah was on at 4, Donahue at 5, NewsCenter 5 at Six, ABC World News Tonight with Peter Jennings at 7, and Chronicle at 7:30.
Donahue was on at 4, followed by Oprah at 5. When the 5pm newscast was added in 1994, Oprah moved into her 4pm slot and Donahue went to mornings until he ended his run.
Seemed like Boston was one of the last major markets to phase out network news @ 7...before they became a CBS O&O, WBZ also ran NBC Nightly News @ 7 until the early 90s. Only one who dropped it sooner was the former WNEV, so they could run Wheel and Jeopardy back-to-back from 7-8 PM.
R.I.P. Don LaFontaine and Ernie Anderson.

I have one more question that I forgot to ask earlier: When did this news open debut?

Sometime in 1990. I think it was in the fall.

I think that this NewsCenter 5 intro would endure until late 93/early 94?
