Who cares how they look and how good they are at playing, they created incredible music despite the obvious. And for these reasons, New Order has changed my life, and at 17, i feel a connection to their music.
just fucking love it recorded or raw as fuck live like this. barney not having the best of days in this session but seeing Stephen morris the human drum machine in action is always a pleasure.
I love how horrible sounding the beginning is hahaha. In fact I prefer all of these bbc studio versions to the actual recordings themselves! They sound more real and from the heart. New order is making me appreciate live music for all the beauty it gives!! Thanks guys! Been listening to you guys a lot the past few days.
That DRUMMER! FUCK o_o. You are a GOD man. Look at that skill. Holy SHIT. (bows my head!!!!!) YOU ARE AMAZING MAN. @starkweather444 i'd be pissed too if all my trousers were dirty the day i had to film a video so i wind up having to wear a pair of short white shorts i hadnt worn in 10 years
That drummer plays really fast...he plays really FAST. Did you all see that? He plays really, really, really fast. I have never seen anybody play that fast, especially for nearly FIVE minutes.
@jaydp84 I know, although Mechanically, Stephen Morris is not the most fluid drummer, his speed and tempo is freakin rock solid. As I grow older, I learn to appreciate him more and more.
@jaydp84 i laughed out loud when I read this! I could see the enthusiasm in the way you wrote your post. Morris is like a superhero with sticks on this one!
funny thing, she cant hit the right notes on her keyboard to save her life lol, she keeps getting crossed up in the same spot over and over but shes cute in the nightgown anyway and i still like the group!
Perhaps, her technique looks like a beginner, but she played all notes in the correct way, and that is what actually counts! If this is your favorite song, like you said, you should be able hear that.
@geistigfrei well i play some and i know that shes getting crossed up in the same spot and this isnt the only live video where it happens. have you really payed attention to the guitarist too lol? does it sound to you like he's hitting the right notes in the start? i sure hope you dont say yes because if you do then your tone def lol. it is a great song though i do like their music.
New Order is special because they had the balls to come from a punk background and attempt dance music. And they did it well. And they did it live. They were fearless. They were far less than first-class musicians, yet it never sidetracked whatever mission they were on. This is true punk music. This is special to me, and though it has been replicated, New Order was the first. This is why they are special.
Oh the originality....how I miss it so. Nothing sounded like this before and since. Have we run out of sounds, notes, beats, lyrics. GOD BLESS NO and PC&L.
Wow - almost a "normal" band - Barney playing lead guitar, Stephen banging away like a madman for 5 min, Hooky actually playing bass *behind* the others...I love the way Gillian actually watches all the others while she's playing, like the only one who is actually in a *band*. The other three are geniuses playing by themselves.
These guys were geniuses. Thank god they didn't just pack it in when Ian hanged himself the night before they were supposed to fly out to their "big break,"
I remember watching this on BBC2 on a saturday afternoon with it being broadcast on Radio1 (who had a slot on FM from Radio 2 for 4 hours). I even taped it on a D90 tape.

david gilmours birthday today march 6, see comment at in a lonely place and realize how many comments are undeserved. this is a professional dealing with extraordinary obstacles. bernard is awesome
@GWC1975 and on a really hot urban early summer day in may, these guys would've been the coolest looking people milling about in their casual and conservative sun gear. they look like they just stepped in off burning pavement to rip out a live session. i think it's fantastic
bernard has beautiful eyelashes, sensual lips , and lets us know he is not shy anymore , and his song is one of his first gifts to us . 100 songs later, i know of no one in pop music of his stature, except david gilmour. two beautiful young men with massive talent ,timeless voices, respect of their peers, and a legacy of music to last a thousand lifetimes. in 2005 , at the hall of fame show they are within 6 feet of each other. dearly love them .
The drummer is technically awful, how he holds his sticks, he looks breathless and boy, how tense he holds his sticks. I don't know many drummers that can keep rhythm that fast for 4+ minutes constantly
He is amazing to watch behind that kit. Notice his blinding speed on the high hat and then when the beat breaks and he comes to a grinding halt and then he picks it up right where he left off. PROPS!
The drummer is technically awful; how he holds his sticks, how tense he is. The action is meant to come from the wrist, throwing the stick down and pivoting from the index finger and thumb and the remaining fingers loosely support. Still great sound, great band and song

@GWC1975 Yeah except I was refering to him as technically awful to counterpoint some one putting him down, it was for the sake of argument. Please read what I was replying too.
@aderham6 -i think he knows that...it's just the style he's doing for this song. If you saw a baseball player who was bunting would you say "look at this batter he doesnt even know how to hold the bat. He is holding it up too far and looks all tense" -he is just doing that to bunt. I think this is the same situation. You're being awfully critical on the old chap! :-) -Cheers
jeesus, who do you think you are to criticize?? this isn't a youtube video made by some guy in his basement you know.. you're making an ass of yourself..
@jbar62 yeah, I remember watching this live in '84, it was part of day long session of live music on BBC, called Rock around the Clock. NO played several songs that day, and Barney was in a crap mood from the beginning, really grimpy and narky with his band mates. Bless.
One of the greatest love songs of the 20th century......and no I'm not taking the piss.Barney looks like he could be in my footy team that I'm a member of ( go Saints this Sat belt those Collingwood fucks_ ) OK seriously Barney deserves a lot more respect than he gets as a musician, vocalist and songwriter-sick of people bagging him. I'm seeing Hooky perform live tonite actually.Gillian is hell gorgeous sad that she quit the band. Talented musician. And Morris just kicks ass on the kit.
Love the way, around 1.50 or so, barney is psyching himself up for his guitar thrash. Has anyone else noticed how hard they concentrated on their music and performance?. All this bollocks about them being a dour lot is nonsense, they took their music seriously, but there is a ton of typical Manc deadpan in there too.
@earinsound Saw Hookie and friends at the Palais Theatre in Melbourne playing the Unknown Pleasures album. During the set he once stated that none of them could sing and play at the same time. At the concert he had his sone playing the bass while he was singing.
@earinsound pretty certain that played a large part in the development of the signature 'twangy' bass sound as Hooky tried to cover up that fact by using the bass as a 'lead'
i don't know why bernie is angry, but he's anger gives power to the lyrics (sorry for my english)

@GWC1975 Yeah except I was refering to him as technically awful to counterpoint some one putting him down, it was for the sake of argument. Please read what I was replying too.

@TheBarroomHero You summed up NO.

@TheBarroomHero To play that kind of basic beat in a consistent manner is a matter of technics.

@ConnorBoyle05 Go read what I was responding too and it will give some context.
TheBarroomHero 5 months ago
@TheBarroomHero Sorry, all I meant to say is that he is technically proficient.
ConnorBoyle05 4 months ago
@ConnorBoyle05 Actually, its not a mater of "technics" its a matter of "Technique" hehe yay for New Order puns! <3

:-) -Cheers

All this bollocks about them being a dour lot is nonsense, they took their music seriously, but there is a ton of typical Manc deadpan in there too.

ever notice bernard cannot play guitar and sing at the same time? it might have something to do w/ the tight white shorts.
earinsound 1 year ago 27
@earinsound Saw Hookie and friends at the Palais Theatre in Melbourne playing the Unknown Pleasures album. During the set he once stated that none of them could sing and play at the same time. At the concert he had his sone playing the bass while he was singing.

@earinsound haha, dude...
whoah1988 1 year ago
@earinsound pretty certain that played a large part in the development of the signature 'twangy' bass sound as Hooky tried to cover up that fact by using the bass as a 'lead'
