  • i don't know why bernie is angry, but he's anger gives power to the lyrics (sorry for my english)

  • HOLY SHIT HE IS A DRUMMACHINE

  • his stack says GAY SPERM.

  • it's the mistakes that make it perfect.

  • Who cares how they look and how good they are at playing, they created incredible music despite the obvious. And for these reasons, New Order has changed my life, and at 17, i feel a connection to their music.

  • Brilliant, even if Bernard looks like he's joined ACR.

  • Heh, Barney sounds (and looks) pissed in all the songs from this BBC recording. I wonder why.

  • Steve on the drums absolute legend,Barney on the other hand, well i miss Ian lets say that.

  • amazing drums...and shorts.

  • Comment removed

  • @zimbabweanwarrior I'm loving what's in 'em

  • lovin those shorts!!

  • omg steve morris is an insane one!

  • So fucking raw. It's PERFECT!

  • When this was shown live on the BBC back in 1984, does anyone remember the name of the first number they played? If you do, please tell me, thanks.

  • Totally imperfect, Barney a bit random on guitar.. and a perfect song. Love it.

  • A hot lunch time in late July in a hot and clammy London. Saw this session live and recorded it on cassette tape. Good to hear/see it back now.

    Innocent times, real creativity.

Damn that ass wipe Simon Cowell and all he represents.

  • just fucking love it recorded or raw as fuck live like this. barney not having the best of days in this session but seeing Stephen morris the human drum machine in action is always a pleasure.

  • Bass tabs?

  • Fucking hell the drummer amazes me! After five minutes keeping that up I love him ♥

  • I love how horrible sounding the beginning is hahaha. In fact I prefer all of these bbc studio versions to the actual recordings themselves! They sound more real and from the heart. New order is making me appreciate live music for all the beauty it gives!! Thanks guys! Been listening to you guys a lot the past few days.

  • giood to see not everything so polished...

  • who wears short shorts... oh.

  • That DRUMMER! FUCK o_o. You are a GOD man. Look at that skill. Holy SHIT. (bows my head!!!!!) YOU ARE AMAZING MAN. I'm not even a drummer, but my brother is, and wow, I have a sense of what it takes to be good and wow man, you are GOOD. You're my idol, instantly! Love the 80's. And I love this bbc series recording of New Order.

    AMAZING.

  • Bernard is pissed.

  • @starkweather444 i'd be pissed too if all my trousers were dirty the day i had to film a video so i wind up having to wear a pair of short white shorts i hadnt worn in 10 years

  • That drummer plays really fast...he plays really FAST. Did you all see that? He plays really, really, really fast. I have never seen anybody play that fast, especially for nearly FIVE minutes.

  • @jaydp84 I know, although Mechanically, Stephen Morris is not the most fluid drummer, his speed and tempo is freakin rock solid. As I grow older, I learn to appreciate him more and more.

  • @jaydp84 i laughed out loud when I read this! I could see the enthusiasm in the way you wrote your post. Morris is like a superhero with sticks on this one!

  • been sifting through shit 80's music and came across this....excellleeent mwa x

  • elliot loves the shorts!

  • cool shorts, literally keeping the balls a cool!

  • funny thing, she cant hit the right notes on her keyboard to save her life lol, she keeps getting crossed up in the same spot over and over but shes cute in the nightgown anyway and i still like the group!

  • @dirtyjew1974

Perhaps, her technique looks like a beginner, but she played all notes in the correct way, and that is what actually counts! If this is your favorite song, like you said, you should be able hear that.

  • @geistigfrei well i play some and i know that shes getting crossed up in the same spot and this isnt the only live video where it happens. have you really payed attention to the guitarist too lol? does it sound to you like he's hitting the right notes in the start? i sure hope you dont say yes because if you do then your tone def lol. it is a great song though i do like their music.

  • Amazing drummer...only a machine could knock out a beat like that today...

  • @MrChubbleyWarner So true. True drum machine!

  • My favorite New Order song.

  • @4021971 mine too

  • Is steve even human?

  • oh gosh... Steve is so fast that I almost can not see his arm in the video....

  • New Order is special because they had the balls to come from a punk background and attempt dance music. And they did it well. And they did it live. They were fearless. They were far less than first-class musicians, yet it never sidetracked whatever mission they were on. This is true punk music. This is special to me, and though it has been replicated, New Order was the first. This is why they are special.

  • @IGotMadOverReggaeton

Perfectly put, Fabulous description of my favourite band. Live they could be so so good.

  • As Stephen Morris once quoted "I've always wanted to be a human drum machine!" He couldn't have said it better!

  • They all look so beautiful! It's so interesting to see Bernard play guitar with his technique.

  • Oh the originality....how I miss it so. Nothing sounded like this before and since. Have we run out of sounds, notes, beats, lyrics. GOD BLESS NO and PC&L.

  • Excellent.

  • Wow - almost a "normal" band - Barney playing lead guitar, Stephen banging away like a madman for 5 min, Hooky actually playing bass *behind* the others...I love the way Gillian actually watches all the others while she's playing, like the only one who is actually in a *band*. The other three are geniuses playing by themselves.

These guys were geniuses. Thank god they didn't just pack it in when Ian hanged himself the night before they were supposed to fly out to their "big break,"

  • jizz in ma pants

  • Great song... although they look a bit like young Take That here in this video... :-)

  • DOOOO YOU find this happens aaaaallllll the tiiimme?

  • 16 people are UNDER the age of consent.

  • just amazing.

  • Anybody catch the charming slogan "GAY SPERM" hand-stencilled on Sumner's Vox cabinet?!

  • There is a good porn called Age of Consent.

  • Pretty sure Bernard Sumner is very drunk in this clip

  • Of course all sensible observers would agree about Mr Steven Morris's God-like tickling of the stretched skins..

  • HAPPY 50th MICHAEL...1984, the year we met, I was 19, past the "age of consent"...so many memories, so many wonderful times...I LOVE YOU ALWAYS!!! XX

  • My favourite New Order song. One of favourite songs in general actually.

  • What is BBC? If thought it was just news.

  • @x0ticShwty naw man they had amazing performers record there. get the john peel sessions of new order and joy division.

  • Ohhh!!! for pete's sake!!! Bernard looks so… gay… But still I absolutely adore this tune and Stephen, men he's got some stamina…

  • I remember watching this on BBC2 on a saturday afternoon with it being broadcast on Radio1 (who had a slot on FM from Radio 2 for 4 hours). I even taped it on a D90 tape.

  • wacho que aguante tiene ese batero

  • @LilenLilen Pero claro, es el buen Stephen Morris!!!

  • wacho que aguante tiene ese batero

  • @Elegia4 No member of Joy Division and New Order are conventional

  • after all these years, this is still my favorite New Order song...Morris is fierce on this

  • @Elegia4 - so you read someplace how to hold a drumstick. the drumming is singular and excellent

  • That's wonderful and awesome This nice short inspired Bernard Summer to play a new stilish of play guitar

  • The drummer looks like Ian Curtis.

  • Stephen, you DID become that drum machine eventually.

  • Ahh when hooky never knew what beer belly meant And no Pete would never wear shorts!

  • i really like how imperfect this session went, and i like how pissed the lead singer guy gets with the microphone. i just like how pissed he seems, it goes really well with the meaning of the song, flipping awesome.

  • Barney was so forking pissed with that spongy microphone cover.... LOL

  • what bass is hook playing here?

  • @charlie123abc360 It's a yamaha

  • Wait, when was Lt. Jim Dangle the lead singer for New Order?

  • I love this song and love this performance, but the beginning guitar riff is so rough at the beginning. Glad it gets better.

  • david gilmours birthday today march 6, see comment at in a lonely place and realize how many comments are undeserved. this is a professional dealing with extraordinary obstacles. bernard is awesome

  • What the fuck with his shorts???

  • @estebanr5150

That length of shorts was normal for much of the 1980s. You're looking at them through 2011-colored glasses.

  • @GWC1975 and on a really hot urban early summer day in may, these guys would've been the coolest looking people milling about in their casual and conservative sun gear. they look like they just stepped in off burning pavement to rip out a live session. i think it's fantastic

  • bernard has beautiful eyelashes, sensual lips , and lets us know he is not shy anymore , and his song is one of his first gifts to us . 100 songs later, i know of no one in pop music of his stature, except david gilmour. two beautiful young men with massive talent ,timeless voices, respect of their peers, and a legacy of music to last a thousand lifetimes. in 2005 , at the hall of fame show they are within 6 feet of each other. dearly love them .

  • i want to learn that synth part so bad! Does anyone know where I can find a tutorial or something? I can't find anything

  • ive played damn drums for years but i couldnt play his syncopation on drums w/out a lot lot lot lot of practice, and then........

  • Bernard looked as if he'd just polished off a gram of coke.

  • Je, je... At the end of the song, Stephen Morris runs to kiss to Gillian Gilbert! It's the PERFECT KISS!!

(Spanish translation: ¡Al final de la canción, Stephen Morris corre a pegarle un morreo a Gillian Gilbert! ¡¡BESO PERFECTO...!!).

  • man those are some sloppy drums!! but it like it. i like it sloppy and messy.

  • @ri394

    Why is it sloppy

  • nice short thights buddy

  • I want to see Morris more!

  • gay sperm.

  • respect

  • All those who think the drumming is easy, film yourself doing it and stick it on here then

  • The speed was very strong. Wasn't it Barney :-))

  • I just got done playing this on my drums. I might have to go to the hospital cuz I think Im having a heart attack.

  • Comment removed

  • lol :37

  • He is amazing to watch behind that kit. Notice his blinding speed on the high hat and then when the beat breaks and he comes to a grinding halt and then he picks it up right where he left off. PROPS!

  • Bernard seems to be a bit ... angry!

  • The fourteen people who dislike this song/video/band are fourteen people I never want to meet.

  • Brilliantly sloppy live - one of the many reasons I adore them.

  • i think kings of leon influenced this band a lot...who's agree with me?

  • @reezful wtf!

  • @reezful i feel like dick slapping you across the face!!! ha

  • @reezful - you sir, are a tool

  • Stephen Morris is the fuckin best Drummer in the World and of all time !

  • @rheumakai33

of course... he used a drumcomputer

    watch?v=WcZrTQr-F7U

  • Hahaha, I like how he throws the mic cover on the floor....you can tell he was annoyed by it hahaha

  • Comment removed

  • Knice pance!

  • The drummer is technically awful; how he holds his sticks, how tense he is. The action is meant to come from the wrist, throwing the stick down and pivoting from the index finger and thumb and the remaining fingers loosely support. Still great sound, great band and song

  • @aderham6 go fuck yourself lol. I doubt you've ever been in a band of this magnitude.

  • @aderham6 yeah his technique is not exactly textbook. but he does get the job done, for new order. and hes pretty tight. i could never hold sticks like that.

  • @aderham6 Try play like that for 5 min straight yourself then...

  • @Kusinjean Ok, when I have shall I let you know so you can check?

  • @aderham6 Music is art I doubt any painter would tell Picasso how to hold a brush. Doesn't matter how you do it, the result it what counts.

  • @bilbomarks Hence the reason I said that they're still a great band with a great sound and song. I was purely commenting on his technique from a drummer's perspective.

  • @aderham6 Who makes the rules? Music is music. They can do it how they want.

  • @aderham6 who the fuck cares. technique is killing drumming

  • @aderham6 Yeah except Stephen Morris was and is one of the best drummers that has ever existed. No one has more energy behind the kit then him. Technically awful, but actually awesome.

  • @TheBarroomHero His style is perfect for that band, it almost sounds like a drum machine, Keith Moon would not work.

  • @TheBarroomHero....Stephen MorrisTechnically Awful??? are u kidding me? u obviously have never listened to him in Joy Division!! Just because he doesn't do lots of fills etc in New Order......that's the style of rhythm New Order had/wanted....it was basically live dance music - ie instead of it being computerised, they actually played it live. I don't know many drummers that can keep rhythm that fast for 4+ minutes constantly

  • @ItTakesStrength any drummer could do that simple fill

any beginner drummer actually could do that simple drum line, the tempo isnt too fast

  • @hanzelhansolo Yeh, course(!)

  • @hanzelhansolo Challenge then : film yourself and stick on it here and we'll judge

  • @hanzelhansolo Challenge then : film yourself and stick on it here and we'll judge

  • @ItTakesStrength Please read what I was replying too. I was defending Stephen you idiot.

  • @TheBarroomHero @ have you read what I was replying to...you called him "technically awful" which he most DEFINATLY is not

  • @ItTakesStrength Yeah you don't get it.

  • @ItTakesStrength in the scheme of things he is self-taught, pretty average, and struggles to keep time. Apart from that he's brilliant.

  • @ItTakesStrength technically. like grip, movements.. etc. he IS horrible. but who the fuck cares. he's a great drummer.

  • @ItTakesStrength "Stephen Morris technically awful"... I couldn't agree with you more. Morris' technical ability is outstanding. Saying his technical ability is awful is like saying Stewart Copeland's technique isn't incredible or that Phil Collins can't play melodic percussion worth a damn.

  • i think he's playing behind a drum machine right?

  • @OnefootinBrooklyn Not on this song-he's triggering electronic drums from the snare. A lot of what sounds like drum machines in New Order is actually him playing...

  • @TheBarroomHero

The drum parts he's come up with are often unconventional/unorthodox, but he's not technically awful, because there is no necessarily right or wrong technique for everything. If it sounds good, it's right. Buddy Rich - the master himself - said, for instance, that matched grip is "wrong." If that were the case, most, if not all, of the drummers you like, are playing "wrong." (Ironically, despite Buddy's statement, I saw a clip of him playing matched grip once!)

  • @GWC1975 Yeah except I was refering to him as technically awful to counterpoint some one putting him down, it was for the sake of argument. Please read what I was replying too.

  • @TheBarroomHero You summed up NO.

  • @TheBarroomHero To play that kind of basic beat in a consistent manner is a matter of technics.

  • @ConnorBoyle05 Go read what I was responding too and it will give some context.

  • @TheBarroomHero Sorry, all I meant to say is that he is technically proficient.

  • @ConnorBoyle05 Actually, its not a mater of "technics" its a matter of "Technique" hehe yay for New Order puns! <3

  • @aderham6 -i think he knows that...it's just the style he's doing for this song. If you saw a baseball player who was bunting would you say "look at this batter he doesnt even know how to hold the bat. He is holding it up too far and looks all tense" -he is just doing that to bunt. I think this is the same situation. You're being awfully critical on the old chap! :-) -Cheers

  • Comment removed

  • @aderham6 you try playing that fast and we'll see how tense you are

  • @aderham6

jeesus, who do you think you are to criticize?? this isn't a youtube video made by some guy in his basement you know.. you're making an ass of yourself..

  • Comment removed

  • fuck that orange thing

  • freakin AWESOME!

  • ahhhh this is so punk. I love it.

  • His voice is really bad live. The drummer is more than legit. So good.

  • Lol! 0:35 He doesn't like that microphone cover

  • @jbar62 yeah, I remember watching this live in '84, it was part of day long session of live music on BBC, called Rock around the Clock. NO played several songs that day, and Barney was in a crap mood from the beginning, really grimpy and narky with his band mates. Bless.

  • Comment removed

  • im sorry right but how fucking cool does hooky look here man

  • I don't get why people bash on his voice so much it goes great with the music, and the music is classic!

  • masterpiece...think about the lyrics...

  • This is fantastic.....thanks for posting.

  • Great drummer!!!!

  • what upper is the drummer on????? i still love this song...

  • One of the greatest love songs of the 20th century......and no I'm not taking the piss.Barney looks like he could be in my footy team that I'm a member of ( go Saints this Sat belt those Collingwood fucks_ ) OK seriously Barney deserves a lot more respect than he gets as a musician, vocalist and songwriter-sick of people bagging him. I'm seeing Hooky perform live tonite actually.Gillian is hell gorgeous sad that she quit the band. Talented musician. And Morris just kicks ass on the kit.

  • Love the way, around 1.50 or so, barney is psyching himself up for his guitar thrash. Has anyone else noticed how hard they concentrated on their music and performance?. All this bollocks about them being a dour lot is nonsense, they took their music seriously, but there is a ton of typical Manc deadpan in there too.

  • ever notice bernard cannot play guitar and sing at the same time? it might have something to do w/ the tight white shorts.

  • @earinsound Saw Hookie and friends at the Palais Theatre in Melbourne playing the Unknown Pleasures album. During the set he once stated that none of them could sing and play at the same time. At the concert he had his sone playing the bass while he was singing.

  • @earinsound brilliant. just brilliant.

  • @earinsound haha, dude...

  • @earinsound pretty certain that played a large part in the development of the signature 'twangy' bass sound as Hooky tried to cover up that fact by using the bass as a 'lead'
