  • Actually early French Canadian fur trappers encountered the Minnatree indian tribe on the border of Montana and South Dakota where the Yellowstone River empties into the Missouri River and asked the tribe what the name of the river was. The tribe answered Yellow Rock River. Lewis and Clark then later renamed it the Yellowstone River. Because the Yellowstone River flows through the present day park the park got its name from the river and not the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone.

  • Contrary to popular belief, Yellowstone was not named for the abundant yellow-colored rhyolite lavas in the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone that have been chemically altered by reactions with steam and hot water to create vivid yellow and pink colors. Instead, the name was attributed as early as 1805 to Native Americans who were referring to yellow sandstones along the banks of the Yellowstone River in eastern Montana, several hundred miles downstream and northeast of the Park.

  • Wunderbar!Viele Grüße aus Deutschland.
