BRUCE IS SO MUCH MORE THAN THIS, travis ,bad interpreting, read and learn a song before you cover it god damnit , this is not a song for idiots to dance chicken dance to ><
Also is there really a manner that a song should be sung? being a musician taking someones song and making it your own is hard to do. If you aim for the Country Market in which you perform Springsteen would belly up on this compared to Chris Ledoux who is an authentic country singer.. To me I would like to here this sung by Bob Seger who had the original Husky voice.who also knows how to cross over.
Chris Ledoux to me does the best version to this song if you dance country. Chris was a way underrated performer who dies way to early in his 50's. Of course credit goes to the original but hell it's to slow to two step to.. Don't really Care for travis on this after Chris. Of course these are all Seger wannabees but Chris was not he had his own unique voice.
@jdh501 ; Did you write this song? NO Springsteen did, therefore how can you determine the manner in which it should be sung? Springsteen obviously sings it the way in which he composed it.
Frankly I think Tritts version sounds 'limp' but we have different tastes don't we?
@s13hgp OK, fair enough. I heard Tritt's version before I ever heard Springsteen's, and to me, Springsteen's version sounds kinda vocally tepid, that's all. I also like the stronger guitar riffs in Tritt's version.
It's all good, we can differ. . .deal with THAT! :-)
@jdh501 With all due respect, Springsteen's the one who wrote and recorded this song first...11 years prior to Travis' recording.
It's a great recording Travis made, but as far as how the song's "supposed to sound" and who's "right," I'll give the benefit of the doubt to the songwriter, not you or a guy who simply did a cover.
The originals are always the way they're supposed to sound. That's like Tritt going to Bruce and saying, "No, THIS is the way YOUR song is supposed to sound!"
@azonsax Wow, okay. I guess my comment from 6 months ago is still provoking a lot of passion, ey?
Okay, fair enough. I don't like Springsteen's version even if he DID write it. I think Travis's version has the kind of grit and almost a sort of DEFIANCE that the song needs to back up the intent. Listen closely to the words and how Tritt sings them. The wink-and-grin icon meant I was just being bullish and tippin' my hat to the rougher version.
@jdh501 I wasn't trying to show any disrespect or anything. I agree that Tritt's version shows the defiance of the song, but Springsteen wrote this because he was going through a divorce and pouring out his emotions through music. Tritt simply just did a cover.
Like I said, no disrespect. These comments, if anything, show our passion for the different kinds of music out there, and the fact that one song is so inspiring that everyone wants to do a cover is amazing.
@jdh501 Totally agree, Bruce did not realize he wrote a country song when he wrote one. As for defiance its right up there with Toby Kieth's "How Do You Like Me Now???"
@eurostrokes1 Springsteen's versions of this song sound like he's about to fall asleep. Even though he wrote the song, it's supposed to be tough and defiant, like the words say. Tritt delivers that. you don't like Travis Tritt? That's fine... whatever.
By the way, you say "bad karaoke", but the guitar here is also an improved interpretation, it fits the words better. TOUGH and STRONG. We can disagree, it don't matter.
No one can or ever will match Springsteen on vocals, because no one sounds anything like him. Not saying he's better or worse but he has one of the most unique voices in music, and to me none of 'his' songs that are covered sound as good as the original. But that's not a knock against TT.
@vette5960 Don:t dismiss this magic version of a great song,Travis can certainly hold a candle to the boss.A beautiful song well sung.I also love the Bruce Springsteen original.

Meh, it's an okay cover. Bruce's version still is #1 though. Bruce wrote it, played that great guitar riff, and sang it like he meant it.

This is the way this song is supposed to sound! Tough and gritty. And the guitar beats the hell outta either Springsteen's or LeDoux's versions!
I speak the truth. Final word. Don't argue. I'm right. Deal with it. ;-)
