This was a moment in history for drum corps; the first time I think there was ever a flag change during the show!!!!!. I remember seeing the flag change for the first time in Stillwater, Minnesota earlier that summer.
What an ignorant thing to do to slam the talent of an entire corps, and a very good one at that. Yeah, I hope the activity would evolve over 30 years, but that's another topic completely. In this corps are major symphony orchestra musicians, college and high school music educators, and other genre professional musicians. Curious, what's your resume?
I was in the Crossmen, and we were standing off to the side in the back when they hit this, and I can still hear the crowd in my brain.....I turned to the guy who marched next to me, and said "I think they just won"......very, very close......what a horn sound!!!
I was there, Mile High Stadium Denver, CO 1978 Phantom's brass line was amazing and just when you think that it is all about the Baritones. the Sops came at you with amazing precision and clarity - Legendary drum corp
Congratulations to The Phantom Regiment, 2008 Drum Corps International World Champions! :-D Too bad their first outright championship couldn't have been for a classic show like this one, but "a win is a win" for my beloved Phantom!
@sdingeswho Any time Phantom gets second, means they should have gotten first. Judges play favorites and prefer giving other corps first. With that logic you could say that their first win was in 1977, 78, 79, 89, 96. They should have gotten a higher placement in 2003 and 07. Also should have gotten 1st in 06
@Drag2hand , "Amen!" to all the wins that Phantom *should* have had --- I can't vouch for the 89 and 96 shows, but I'm *very* familiar with the late-70s programs (my "focus" in terms of drum-corps is that era), and at least 2 of those, probably 78 and 79, should have gone to Rockford. "Dittoes", also to your observations on the often "political" nature of DCI's judging, the most egregious example of which is '75 (love that Scouts show, but the scoresheets are "hinkey", esp. the M&M Execution).
@sdingeswho I agree in 78, but I was in the stands in 79 and I thought the Blue Devils had won. But I walked away humming "Let it be Me" lol. Probably the best closer ever. As for political judging, there is no doubt Blue Stars should have won in 72, IMO.
I admit to really being blown away by Phantom in 77 and loving them ever since. My first encounter with PR was at Horicon Marsh Days in 77. I was marching in a HS band, we lined up behind PR. They heard us playing Tannhauser, and they seranaded us. wow! Then we marched exhibition for the field show and got to watch all those fantastic midwest corps. Same closer in 77, didn't know what hit me, seeing it for the 1st time ever, and at field level.
*Sigh!* Well, buttongod, you're now the Keeper of the Flame, with the only true old-school Phantom Regiment performance on YouTube, other than that one clip of the Phantomettes at '80 WGI. Can't blame kschannen, but this really cheeses me off --- good talking with you, always.
Wow! Thanks, Buttongod! Union High School, Tulsa, Oklahoma bought the arrangement and drill from Phantom, and we performed it as seen here in '79-80. I still remember the thrill when we brought the company-front forward and the flags snapped-up behind us!
Plus, let us not forget the absence of the modern "Pit". No gongs or huge marimbas upfront. Marcus Anthony, I believe carrying that big A tympani and all keyboards being marched about...wow...heavy.... literally. Strange to see the backfield being occupied so quickly. Things were pretty rigid back then. (sigh) I miss it. The tic system WAS working.
it was great show & had the best seat in the house sitting at the 50 yard line working the shotgun mic for the pbs soundtrack . to this day the term continues " ROCK ME ROCKFORD "
Cool...I shot prelims for Drum Corps World Magazine that year...couldn't get a pass for finals..Got some tickets from Bob Fields. That was a great finals.
This is pretty comical. I'm not saying I don't wish my high school band would've sounded like this, but this isn't half the quality that modern drum corps is. I'm not sure how these members would fare against even the lower level corps members in auditions. I'm not trying to insult, but it does take talent to play those "notes", Mr. Davis.
i wouldn't speak so harshly of this corps. most of the a and b corps kids were taught by these very players. you would be surprised what they could do.
Yes, I'm sure it takes talent to play those notes. And I'm also sure it takes talent to play the all of the interval studies from the Claude Gordon Method Workbook too, but it wouldn't be partularly entertaining to witness. Old school corps may not be as sophisticated and polished as today's "product" but it was a heckuva a lot more thrilling to watch.
Amen, kschannen, although, personally, I always preferred Frederick Fennel's Concone Studies --- a real "crowd-pleaser" LOL! [Good one, and I couldn't-a said it better, myself.]
As it pertains to your "quality" remark, well, I believe it just shows your ignorance. I didn't say corps today weren't talented. I was referring to the fact that most corps have choosen to play "notes" instead of music.
Don't forget the instruments were completely different than today. For the horns, it was single valve, with a slide for the longest time. I believe 78 was the first year they used 2 valve instruments.
Plus, the recordings do not do the corps jusitce, IMO. Phanotm had a big fat horn sound then, just like today.
Prior to switching to the two valve horns and after the valve/slide, there were valve/"rotary" valve horns. I think the rotary valve was basically the same as the second valve.
Way to encourage the advancement of music in America. If you're going to put the fact that you're a Sinfonian right up there, then be aware of what you're representing, Brother.
Who was the brass caption head for 1978 PR? I know Jim Wren was the arranger, was he the caption head as well?
