  • Wow thanks man my right roll alwayz ended up wit my left leg in front but now i kno wAt to do thanka man

  • @ParkourDirk

    ok, ich werds versuchen

  • @parkourdirk hey dude i love your rolls, and im really frustrated to not getting the roll right, wud u go to my channel and just take a look?, if its too fast, u cud use the spacebar to stop at anytime or keep clicking it to make it go slow mo

  • I roll the same way :)

  • nice bien lol

  • Thank you, so much.

  • Thanks a ton. Your tutorial is by far the most helpful. Thanks for showing at so many angles. I know where I'm screwing up now.

  • this video can help me to understand how to do the roll without a hit. Thanks man !! awesome !!

  • after doing this about 10 times is it normal for ur right should to hurt ?

  • That's a lot of arm impact :/

  • ähnlich wie ne judo rolle^^

  • Would love to see some diverolls!

  • try to land with both feet at the same time and right next to eachother orelse all your weight might end up on the front ankle/heel

  • hey thanks for posting this helpful vid

been looking for something in slow motion

  • very nice i like the whole rolling sideways off the arm-very eaisy to do and doesn't

vary if you'll hit your lower back bone much. more of a david belle style.

pretty cool ima try it soon on concrete after my backbone heals from practice of trial and error.

  • when i do a pk roll i dont use my shoulder i use my elbow and wrist without my head touching the floor. smooth landing. still considered a pk roll?

  • JAKKASH

  • or itll just build your ankle up strong as shit mine does that all the time I tried not doing it and I twisted it, but not I hit my ankle on all kinds of surfaces, and no pain. my skin doesnt even sratch there anymore. just barely

  • nice beats what is it?

  • i can also do this.. :)

  • Wow, awesome rolls. Just one little thing. When you roll your left foot hits the ground with its ankle. Try flexing your foot upwards to land on the ball of your foot. This will let you go on running quicker and might stop you from hurting your ankle. :)

  • @JoltThePyro started going that already, as I saw it another good tutorial about the roll. But thanks for the tip! :)

  • thx!!! After that video i learn it thx

  • @NikosKoutt Good to hear, pass it on to your friends!

  • Hey klasse.

Danke für das Lob! Empfiehl das Video ruhig deinen Freunden weiter!

  • Very good roll, but you have the same problem that I have. You hit your ankle on your way out of the roll...try torquing (turning) your torso while coming out of your roll, and see if that stops you from hitting your ankle.

  • Thanks for the input. I haven't hit my ankle in a while, but I had the problem some time ago. I'll keep your advice in mind!

  • Sanfter rollen?

  • i think is my arm strength but why you thing is the reason of that i broke my clavicle after doing a roll? i just can remember that my shoulder get down while i was rolling and the noise of my broken bone .

  • Did you jump down somewhere, and then roll. Or was it while practising the roll? I find it hard to believe that your brones broke while practising the roll.

  • course that i jumped from one place, no so hight but i jumped whit strength

  • I can't stress enough, that you should only start jumping from heights when you've mastered the roll. You should be able to unconciously use it after lower jumps (hip height), and only then progress further.

  • i always hit my thigh.wat am i doin wrong?

  • I really don't know. I'd have to see your roll to give any profound advice.

Schau einfach mal vorbei!

  • just curious? can your arm handle that kinof punishment at :54??

thanks for the tutorial! im finally starting to get it!

  • My arm's fine, thanks for asking. Don't really know what you mean with punishment, there's not much pressure there anyways?

  • i notice when u jump and roll, u land on the 1,2 motion, try landing with both feet hitiing the ground at the same time. Will help you in bigger drops.

  • Which roll and jump do you mean? Those from the ping-pong-table are landed simultaneously.

Those on the ground don't have too much emphasis on the feet, but more on the shoulder.

  • nice job bro!!

  • He's right about his left rolls though... he lands too hard-his reflexes want him to stay standing, but hisbody wants to go into a roll, so it takes him time to actually initiate the roll after he lands, which places as much strain as there can be on the spine. I am trying to learn PK myself, but I still am looking for a trainer. I know a few tips about it, but not enough. I just wanted to help Dirk because I would want someone to help me if I was Dirk. Good luck Dirk. PK forever!

  • About your training:

Start by your self. Watch some vids of basic exercises on youtube and if you want it enough you can do it,

May the power of the mind be with you

  • I hope so, but I am still going to get the occasional help. I really don't plan on hurting myself too much... not too much.

  • Yep, btw I have managed to complete a roll of mine, a few actually, but just need to perfect it now... I have done them standing and crouching...

  • but u see it will take about a year to perfect it, ull know what i mean when u do it for looong time

  • tu nohu si nekdy zlomíš..

  • I'm sorry, I don't speak czechian, but google tells me you're asking "Have you ever broken a leg?", and the answer would be:

I've never broken a single bone in my entire life.

  • In irgendwelchen Foren unterwegs?

  • Well, keep on trying and eventually you'll get good at both shoulders. Took me some time to learn the roll on both sides too!

  • Thanks for the vid! Slow motion really helps me get into the mindset!

  • Good to hear, thanks for the comment!

  • nice, i need help i'm afraid of pavement =(

    plz help, PM me

  • Don't go too fast, and go too high. Try to push yourself forwards a bit, and always stay close to the ground. Don't think of a ball, that is rolling, but think of an egg of sorts. Remember to torque your torso!

  • well its differenct to everyone i guess, i can do both, and of course i prefer ball, it help me to get speed

  • Just as you said, everyone's got to find their own way.

  • i say your roll is pretty much perfect.

  • Thank you for the compliment, mate!

  • VERY GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOD!

  • THANK YOOOOOOOOOU!

  • You make it look so easy, Whenever I try doing? it i land on my back. (Ouch!)

  • It wasn't easy as first. What you see here is the result of training and repeating the movement for over 4 years of training. Keep on trying, and train safe!

  • 5/5 stars & in my favourites :D

i made yesterday the decision to start with parkour, now im searching for all kinds of tutorials :]

unfortunately the weather over here is so bad, that can only train the roll indoor :[

  • Always welcome, please spread it :)

  • I tried your technique from standing still and so far it works the best and I've watched alot of tutorials and this one really helped. Don't see why it isn't more popular =D

  • Because it's not well linked on other sites.

If you liked it: Promote it! Tell others about it, share it with your friends and fellow traceurs :)

  • thanks so much!!!! your the best. i tryed doing this following other guides and i hurt my shoulder and back a bit trying this then i saw your guide and i got it right. =] 5/5

  • The best feedback I could hope for, and the sole reason I made this tutorial :)

    Congratulations on your progress!

  • Hey thx. 4 vid it helped with the cement its like the one i do but a bit better nice roll dude!

  • No problem, you'll get it better in no time :)

  • I like it!

  • Good to hear :)

  • So you roll from your right shoulder to your left hip and vice versa?

I managed to knee myself in the face the first time I did it :)

  • Yup I do, and how you managed to do that is far beyond my imagination :D

  • Dirk this the example i've been looking for. I can learn a lot from this, Thanks for posting it man!

  • Always welcome. Spread it! :)

  • Nice roll man, really nice. It seems other people are getting defensive on your roll cause they think they have a better one? It doesn't matter if it looks like it hurts, it's the way your body is use to the movement, and how it flows.

  • The funny part about this is, that very many guys I tought, of different build, weight and physicality, adapted to my way of rolling and their problems (pain on shoulders, loss of momentum etc.) ceased, when they did it the way I advised it. That gives me some justification, doesn't it?

If someone shows me a better way to do and teach it, and has taught as many people as I did in the past, then I'm willing to listen :)

  • i have tried for a long time, but i cant seem to get this right :(

whenever i roll, no matter how slow or how i place my hands, i always seem to catch either my shoulder or my hip, or both. I cant get the roll across my back to avoid them both. do you have any tips?

  • I can't judge your roll without seeing it, so the only tip I can give you is: Be patient and practice.

  • Right shoulder -> Rechte Schulter.

    Left shoulder -> Linke Schulter.

Also ja, es gehen beide. Video ansehen! Wer lesen kann ist klar im Vorteil! :P

  • Not a bad tut, but i dont like it. Look at second 17, you whole weight is being put on your knee. Tell me that that doesnt hurt.... I used to roll like that but i found out that i needed to kind push with the left arm a little so i could roll a bit sideways. You left shoulder roll seems a lot better but i dont like the fact that your right foot goes in front the left. But then again this is just my opinion.

  • Maybe your vision is crooked, but I think it's just the trousers' fault:

It does not hurt, because the knee doesn't touch the ground. The contact goes from the thighs to the calves, and it only touches muscular / fatty tissue, no bone structures or cartilege has direct contact to the floor.

  • I still don't understand why everyone insists on smashing their ankle on the ground like that?

  • We don't insist on it, there's just no point in avoiding it if it doesn't hurt you. Why do YOU insist on changing unharmful behaviour?

  • It does hurt, plus you could sprain it if you don't come out of it right. That's what I think.

  • Please don't generalise: Maybe it hurts you, but like I said "there's just no point in avoiding it if it doesn't hurt you".

It does not hurt me, and I taught many people to do it the same way, and no pain there either.

And no ankle sprains in four years.

Do you have a video of you rolling? Maybe it IS a better technique.

  • Hey, also erstmal klasse video, werds gleich morgen ausprobieren.

  • keep your legs in closer

  • For what reason?

  • tuck them in harder- you WILL roll smother ;)

  • Tucking them in results in a roll that goes more over the lumbar spine, which is more accentuated and thus results in pain.

  • your elbow hits the ground is it normal cause me too

  • Look at the execution, where I jump and then roll. You'll see that the contact is minimal/non-existant.

  • Very nice vid!!! Hopefully this will help me with my roll, I roll right instead of left and I always get pain in my shoulder and in my hip.

Props for the Champloo Music XD

  • for the hip, twist more to the side

  • Again, why should I?

  • also ich find deine videos klasse :)

  • I just got your message. You must be a good spotter, besides being a good teacher, to teach rolling in an hour. Just remembering your 'roll from behind your armpit' bit, I rolled painlessly, after a lapse in practise.

    The video is here:

    watch?v=oYsZ89GXCX4

    Another one is here:

    watch?v=tFO9IUyfDx4

  • Mate, this is awesome footage. Thats quite possibily the best roll ive seen. Textbook, well done, im practicing at the moment a king kong Vault (3ft wall with 7ft drop other side, into a roll, this is on concorete, People dont appreatiate how hard parkour is. Well done tho, u've tought me where i was going wrong.

  • Thanks for the praise.

And be aware when doing that catpass to drop. Most people underestimate the fact, that the catpass requires you to lift your center of gravity quite high over the obstacle itself, resulting in an even higher drop.

  • Man you are very good :) Could you give me ure id PLZ? i have some questions for u :D

  • What kind of ID? MSN? Just write me a message on YouTube.

  • yahoo...msn ^_^ :P please ^_^

  • You got a PN.

  • Thank you! I'm pretty sure I know what I've been doing wrong now :) Instead of rolling from the forearm all the way diagonally across the back, I was just landing on my shoulder and going from there (which hurts :\).. I hope I get it right now :)

  • Yes, please come back and tell me when you get it right. If you got any problems feel free to record a short clip of your roll and send it to me, so I can watch it and spot possible mistakes!

  • I just noticed. You're right-handed. ^_^

Some of your left rolls are similar to your right. I can see from your foot placement. Anyway, nice video bro. It is good that someone has thought of uploading a tutorial demonstrating both left and right rolls.

    Cheers! ^_^

  • No problem, I hope it helped!

  • yeap, this tutorial,is a bit different from the others,it's fabulous detailed, especially for young adults, who don't have enough knowledge to jump safe, without damage,so this vid is great!!

    Greetings from Rigaairnomads team(Latvia)

  • Well, what can I say? Thanks for the praise :)

Keep on training and greetings to Latvia!

  • thanks a lot guys

  • It's just me, but no problem ;)

  • This tutorial helped, I have watched this so many times now when I roll others say that I have a perfect roll.

    Thank you for teaching

  • Glad to hear that I helped you :)

  • Kein Problem. Einfach weiterüben, dann klappt es immer schmerzfrei ;)

  • I tried putting my elbow forward, but I hurt my shoulder and hip. My head is near the ground too, but it's not hitting it. In your video it looks like your head is quite far away from the ground..

Are there any excercises that would help in doing a roll?

  • I don't think there are any specific exercises, but I do find that handstands give you good core stability, so your bones are cushioned by muscles, especially around the shoulder/back area.

And start out with very slow rolls, then you shouldn't be able to hurt yourself if you stay close to the ground.

  • I had that problem too but I discoverd that how longer you hold your hands on the groun how lower the ground touches the back of your shoulder.

hope it helps. (works for me)

  • Thanks, Dirk. I'll try it and post later to tell you how it went.

  • I can't seem to get this roll. I don't understand how to roll "around" the shoulder. I can also never get the angle. I was using the roll tutorial from 3run and couldn't get that, so i tried this one.

I just cant seem to get any rolls to work for me. I can't really see how to do that roll because you don't shoot the roll from all angles, only horizontal and vertical, so it's hard for me to see how to do this.

  • From a crouching/squatting position:

Form a diamond with your hands, fingers touching fingers, thumb touching thumbs. Now put that diamond on the floor, approximately two feet in front of your toes. Now twist your arms so your LEADING ELBOW is facing the FRONT. Try rolling from that and tell me if it works.

  • CAN YOU SPEAK GERMAN??

  • YES I CAN!!

  • ok ure roll ok but i think u might hurt ure shoulder and well u was wearing a thick top o and type in roll tutorial-parkour ozzi does these rolls and hes is the best

  • Actually, I can even do those rolls topless on metal grates, without feeling too much discomfort. I'm inclined to say I can do it quite well...

Also about that ozzi guy: His starting position is useless, soft surfaces are useless, his roll isn't really applicable to real Parkour situations?

  • Is it normal to hurt your shoulder when doing this roll?

  • No. The roll should never hurt you.

  • i can't get my body sideways enough :( any advice?

  • Focus on moving your leading shoulder (in my case the right preferably) to the front and letting its fingers point towards you/your feet, while the elbow points to the front.

  • what is the song name? and since im learngin how to do both parkour and free run this is a great help. thanks. if u ever need to learn how to beatbox msg or watch my vids

  • The song's name is "ole", and it's by "Nujabes + Fat Jon". You can find it on the Samurai Champloo "departure" soundtrack.

  • Have you tried martial arts rolls, BTW? I was trying to use the one here: watch?v=bM2dO5mGBqs for my parkour, when I started facing my problem. Just curious, if you have any idea, since these guys seem to roll straight to their buttocks.

  • These guys have a different purpose for their roll. They roll when falling, or when being thrown, so mostly from hip level without any specific high-impact momentum to any side. In Parkour you work with impacts a multitude of your own bodyweight and have to make decisions in split seconds.

Another point would be, that those guys rolled on soft material. The whole area in a dojo is mostly padded, by soft cushioning mats. You can't, or more specifically WON'T, do that in this way on concrete :)

  • Having watched your videos, I actually tried that a few hours ago; and at the time, I did not realize that I was getting it right, in trying to avoid hitting the painful spot. Thanks a lot.

Any idea how long this pain might last, lest I accidentally hit it again? Two weeks without rolling had become unbearable, for me.

  • At the beginning when I learned it I bruised my shoulder and my hipbones a few times. And it always lasted about 2-3 days until the bruise was gone again. Just be patient, don't rush things.

  • You know, with all the advice that you've given in these discussions I found it very easy to roll from a horse stance, with my arms symmetrically out on the ground in front of me; but I suppose that that kind of training would only help when training for a dive roll. It's very smooth, with the torso first contacting the ground just below and behind the armpit. Only problem is: I have watch out that I don't hit my elbow to the ground (my left elbow, when I roll over my right shoulder) at exit.

  • Would you mind filming your roll? That would make it easier for me to look for flaws/bumps in it.

And yes, the elbow-thing is feeling-based. It happened to me when learning the left-shoulder roll. I got it sorted now though.

  • Sure, I've just put it up. The URL ends with:

    watch?v=T-62B4AbkeY

and it should be viewable in less than an hour (I don't know how long YouTube will take, but I only just uploaded it). It's the latest video upload on my YouTube channel.

    Thanks a lot.

  • Hey Faissal!

I've posted comments to your video, hope they will help :)

  • Hey, a short time ago, I tried rolling over my right shoulder a few times, and kept slamming my lower back onto the concrete. Now, I normally don't have any pain, but when I rolled (even last week), I felt quite some pain to the left of my backbone, at around the waist level. Now, when I roll, it feels like there's a bone that hit directly onto the floor, at that location. You have any advice, as to what kind of injury I might have, and what I could do about it? Thanks.

  • I don't think it's a kind of injury. This normally happens when you don't roll sideways enough. Think of rolling over your armpit, then rolling on the spot on your shoulder, next to the neck. If you roll over the armpit area and torque your body, you instantly go more sideways and thus avoid hitting (the shoulder and) the bones at your buttocks :P

  • i always turn my back whilst rolling and go straight :( do you have any tips to get the roll from shoulder to hip please?

  • Focus on twisting your torso. When you roll over your right shoulder, then get the shoulder to the front. Look where I make the first contact with the slow rolls, and the curve across my back.
