Before you start trashing the CF; if you knew anything about the Canadian Forces, you would know that the troops in that parade are most likely an Armoured Recce's from an Armoured Reserve Battalion since they have a tank and wear black berets with an armoured cap brass and for a parade you won't bring all the vehicles that you have on base.
canada should host a huge ass military parade cuz im searching all over utube for them but cant find any :/ we need to show our military strength for once ^^
@GreenSmugleaf Unlike you, I have respect for every armed forces and every soldier in them. My own takes priority being a Canadian but also learning about my own military something you apparently failed to do. There is a lot of pride in being a soldier of the Canadian Forces. You apparently feel differently because we have worse parades than China or Russia? Parades don't dictate a military's ability to take action in the world. If it be wars or humanitarian.
@GreenSmugleaf I do respect my fellow countrymen, I however don't support idiots who trash talk there own military. Every post you've made in here was all bullshit trash talk of our armed forces. Also you need a history lesson idiot. WW1 and 2 were our finest moments but they were not our latest wars. Korea War we had 100, 000 troops in alone. Armored, Air, and Inf divisions. The CF is the primary donator of soldiers to the goal of peace keeping than any other nation, the list is endless.
@GreenSmugleaf... first off this is on a part of a 2.5 hour parade. So I would not think this parade to be week. Some 350, 000 + people line the streets to watch
@hotblueyed The soviets and the chinese did great parades ,sometimes I was canadian governement wasnt such a weak , actionless ,neverendingly conflicting itself entity ...
@GreenSmugleaf I wish pissants like you were not self hating mofo's. First of all, you realize you're disrespecting a entire military based on the fact other countries have better parades? Canada has a great military history, something you need to educate yourself on. Canada also does more with it's "weak" military currently than either China or Russia. If it be the Afghan war, or the countless UN missions our soldiers take part of. Get some respect idiot.
@Bacardi4206 Oh yeah ,of course , the small 30 million population country has better military history than russia or china , of course now I need to respect them and kiss the ground they walk on while they kick me ass with their big black leather boots,I think not , YOU need to respect the people you stupid twat.Im entitled to my fucking opinion and you should just shut the fuck up.
@GreenSmugleaf No I don't have to respect your opinion, as I don't respect idiots. I also never said Canada has a bitter military history than russia or china. It's not a shocker you can't read though. I said Canada currently does more with it's military than either nation, even with our small forces. It's called Afghanistan, Anti-Pirating, Peacekeeping, humanitarian missions, the list goes on. Unlike a lot of countries, we don't sit on our ass's for defense. We make use of what we have.
@hotblueyed The soviets and the chinese did great parades ,sometimes I was canadian governement wasnt such a weak , actionless ,neverendingly conflicting itself entity ...
@hotblueyed I marched in that parade with HMCS Calgary's crew and it was the most amazing amount of support for our military I have ever seen! The City of Calgary is the best namesake city in the country!
@GreenSmugleaf we have about 100,000 men and women in the Forces, all ranks, all elements, Regs and Res... if you want to put on a major military parade you can foot the bill to fly everyone there. Also we got alot better things to do then practice for a major parade.
Im an air cadet and at the last stampede parade, the Calgary highlanders stole our bus to the Mewata armouries while we were parading and messed up our stuff ><

Well, I'm glad to see you've come around. By the way, my family did quite well long before Reagan. My mother in fact knew Eisenhower well. Carry on. --------------------P.S. Patton suffered from enough personality disorders to fill a phone book.
@dsindc I guess we miscommunicated because I was always understood the dangers of extremism and militarism.
Yeah, Patton did... but hey, he got the job done for what it's worth. I would rather be with Patton than Montgomery but that's a whole other can of worms/topic.
Fair enough. Congratulations on winning the hockey gold. You would be surprised at how many Americans actually cheered (to some extent) the Canadian team. It is your game after all. I've always loved the Peach Arch on the Washington state Canadian (B.C.) border. I find the its words very moving. On the American side, "Children of a common mother", the words on the Canadian side "Brethren dwelling together in unity". That is something I don't see ever changing. Cheers.
@dsindc Thank you! I was just downtown in Vancouver and it was amazing. What a great felling.
Yes, our countries are united no matter what. I loved the sign some of our soldiers in Afghanistan were holding. "Comrade in arms.. just not on the ice"
Congratulations to you and the US on your fantastic medal count.
Maxobillion writes "So how I describe myself is irrelevant to this thread". Then please explain why you posted that information on this site? I have NO issue with the military, and I would have assumed you could have figured something out when I pointed out where I was during 9-11. It's the glorification of the military that I find tiresome and dangerous. The neo-cons like it. Those who have seen battle e.g. Colin Powell do not.
The fact that your family did well under Regan (sic), is totally irrelevant. Many did not. The ranks of the uninsured swelled. Economic disparity became particularly problematic. We continue suffering because of Reagan's "voodoo" economics. Americans pay less tax than any other developed country, we can afford health care. We cannot afford our current health care system as evidenced by it's share of GDP. As for Bush, the cost of war was 'off budget', and still our debt exploded. Keep trying.
You described yourself as someone who enjoys sipping good Scotch, smoking Cuban cigars while listening to a lovely baroque bagatelle. How avant garde. You invite parody. It's this sort of over the top crass and likely disingenuous description of your lifestyle that's so hysterical. I have nothing against Scotch, cigars, or baroque music. As for democracy, I remind you it works both ways. You should expect a response when you make bizarre comments, and continue to avoid a real response.
Finally, the ad hominem comments only reinforce a portrait of a very immature individual. I'll only say this: On 9-11 I had debris falling around me in the D.C. area. Get your abacus out and add that one up. No, I do not find your pathetic comment on welfare offensive. I find it lame. I do however find your comments about the President offensive. You write he is "barely American". And how would that be? Are you a 'birth denier' ? That deserves no comment. For you, I suggest psychotherapy.
You appear incapable of addressing anything I've said, and your credibility is nil. You initially wrote " Most liberals do not like militarism or anything paramilitary. They would rather see money go to welfare rather than something productive such as the military." What bizarre drivel coming from a self identified citizen (so you say) of a country considered by conservatives here to be socialist. War is not good for individuals as evidenced by the behavior of Canadian forces in Somalia 93.
What truly irritates me about you beyond the rather blatant lack of authenticity, is that it's just this sort of fetishism that leads to the Mussolinis and the Hitlers. In my experience, anyone who has experienced battle rarely celebrates it. It's true: war is hell. Yes, the soldiers did their duty, and THAT should be celebrated. I would be waving my flag too. But I detest the cowards who find this exciting, enough to put others in needless wars. Are you taking notes?
The immaturity lies in a personality that never fully developed. It relies on fetishes as evidenced by a celebration of all things involving 'militarism'. There's an almost childish glee at the sight of goose stepping Russian troops, or clips of the Riefenstahl propoganda movies. There is something almost Walter Mittyesque going on- Mitty a meek, mild man with a vivid fantasy life: daydreams imagining himself a wartime pilot. Could this be you, "sipping Scotch, smoking Cuban cigars"? How sad.
I never said I liked war. You merely assumed that. The Canadian armed forces are not about conquering but about peace keeping. They serve our country with great professionalism and not to mention offer humanitarian aid in times of international crisis. i.e. Haiti.
I celebrate the military because I was a navy officer for a few years after university. I am extremely proud of my service and proud of the traditions and values bestowed upon all members of our armed forces.
Oh Maxobillion, read what was written old chum. Is the ascot a bit tight today? You wrote the following: "Most liberals do not like militarism or anything paramilitary". I suspect you're correct. I wrote nothing about not supporting the military. You are celebrating "militarism". There is a difference. People who do so are generally projecting feelings of inadequacy into something they perceive as strong and rugged. Or they're gay and they find it sexually stimulating. Which describes you?
Most liberals Maxobillion, have grown up. They are emotionally healthy enough to refrain from sophomoric militaristic delusions. Your life must be dull. How long can one can sit in one's Queen Anne chair, sniffing quality Scotch, whilst watching spiffy big brutes in their uniforms. Oh dear me! One is getting moist just pondering it isn't one ! Get a life Max, and grow up.
Yes, and the Quebecois dislike it intensely. I will never understand why Canada continues to celebrate its British heritage when such a large part of your country finds it so offensive. Its not something that unifies Canada, it does just the opposite as evidenced by polls taken in Quebec year after year. Why don't you create a unique identity? I find Canadian soldiers in bear skin hats a bit silly. But I suspect the Quebecois find it humiliating. And yes, I'm American.
Don't get me wrong ChicoAlpha, I've been to Canada, and like it lots. I just don't see what good it does to mimic the British when the country has TWO major cultural ancestors. I don't blame the Quebecois for wanting to leave.
Someloke8895, it's your country ( I assume ). But the "frogs" represent about 20% of your population. Have the "frogs" not fought in wars Canadians of all types fought in? But this is an issue that does not involve my country, so do what you will.
anyone else notchie how in the last 10 years or so when ever the army parades somewhere its always such a small group you knwo i think our armed forces are due a big grand parade one day soon :)
@3L24 if u want that shit go to 1980s russia.... they used to march nuclear missiles down the street along with thousand of armored vehicles and infantry
Does anyone know why the canadian army forms up in ranks of three? in army cadets we always form in ranks of three it can't be four has to be three. Has it something to do with the battle on the plains of abrham? just a guess cause the britsh formed up in 3 ranks for that battle. If you could tell me that would be great thanks.
I think its just cause thats the easiest way to march troops. While still making it look good of course. When I was in CFB Borden, we marched in 2 ranks but we only had a platoon of 40.
just outta curiousity, is the soldiers in formation marching in a ceremonial way or is that how the canadian military marches? im in the USAF and its slightly different than how we march, especially the arm swing. never no tho it could be the angle
Hiya, no, it's not ceremonial, this how we always march. Arms come shoulder high, thumbs on top of the fist. It's patterned after the British way of marching. We used to salute like the Brits with palms facing outward but changed a while back to palm facing down, forefinger almost touching the eyebrow. Pretty much the same as you yanks. :)
mact50 The Royal Navy certainly does not salute palm forward, traditionally The Royal Navy salutes back of hand out, this was becauase in the days of sail the palm was always discoloured with tar from the lines on the sails
It is a different march, but that's also typical of any march. We exagerate the arm motion a little more, except for a few ceremonial movements such as slow march.
Thank you for all your positive comments. If you post on here and the post is negative in anyway towards the people who have put their life on the line for us, WILL BE DELETED
@hotblueyed Respect for Canadians, I've been there, and I have only good memories. I spent one of the most beautiful year of my life there, and I'm dying to go go back there.
and i wonder if you would even make it over seas. my guess would be no. for one thing, thats a horrible thing to even think about, and two, dont be a dick, those people are over there risking their lives for their country, keeping me and you safe. I will be honoured when i join their ranks.
In 2004 before I retired from the U. S. Navy we deployed with the HMCS Brandon, couldn't have been anymore professional and fun too. Great job Canada!
Around 95,000 I think. Yes the Canadian Army is very professional and well trained - it has to be because every five or six years the military budget takes about a 60% cut. I have a lot of respect for the Irish Defense Forces. Sciathan Fianoglach an Airm is badass and has done a lot of work alongside the CF on peace-keeping missions and has trained with our JTF2.
same ive been in for a little while, its sad to see how little people really care about our military though, ppl just care about themselves these days, no national pride, in the last wars, people were fighting just to get in, now ppl just call us murderers and ppl with no education over their starbucks, its truly depressing
That Leopard1 might be the one that still has my name etched into one of the panels on the outside of the turret. Unless they decommissioned my POS lol.
They are amazing. I used to be in the Lord Strathcona's Horse (Royal Canadians) when they were still here in Calgary in the 80's and the one thing that I always enjoy was driving the Leopard or being the gunner. When they moved me up to Crew commander it was a little less exciting but I still felt that surge of power when sitting in a tank like that.
It's an experience you really need to have for yourself.
this stampede looks quite different from countries like china where even the angle of arms is uniform for every soldier in the march

Yeah, Patton did... but hey, he got the job done for what it's worth. I would rather be with Patton than Montgomery but that's a whole other can of worms/topic.
Maxobillion 2 years ago

Colin Powell do not.
dsindc 2 years ago
The fact that your family did well under Regan (sic), is totally irrelevant. Many did not. The ranks of the uninsured swelled. Economic disparity became particularly problematic. We continue suffering because of Reagan's "voodoo" economics. Americans pay less tax than any other developed country, we can afford health care. We cannot afford our current health care system as evidenced by it's share of GDP. As for Bush, the cost of war was 'off budget', and still our debt exploded. Keep trying.
dsindc 2 years ago
You described yourself as someone who enjoys sipping good Scotch, smoking Cuban cigars while listening to a lovely baroque bagatelle. How avant garde. You invite parody. It's this sort of over the top crass and likely disingenuous description of your lifestyle that's so hysterical. I have nothing against Scotch, cigars, or baroque music. As for democracy, I remind you it works both ways. You should expect a response when you make bizarre comments, and continue to avoid a real response.
dsindc 2 years ago
Finally, the ad hominem comments only reinforce a portrait of a very immature individual. I'll only say this: On 9-11 I had debris falling around me in the D.C. area. Get your abacus out and add that one up. No, I do not find your pathetic comment on welfare offensive. I find it lame. I do however find your comments about the President offensive. You write he is "barely American". And how would that be? Are you a 'birth denier' ? That deserves no comment. For you, I suggest psychotherapy.
dsindc 2 years ago
I find people like you offensive. You do nothing for this world but complain but never offer any alternatives.
Your President is just a one term President. I hope you know that.
Maxobillion 2 years ago
You appear incapable of addressing anything I've said, and your credibility is nil. You initially wrote " Most liberals do not like militarism or anything paramilitary. They would rather see money go to welfare rather than something productive such as the military." What bizarre drivel coming from a self identified citizen (so you say) of a country considered by conservatives here to be socialist. War is not good for individuals as evidenced by the behavior of Canadian forces in Somalia 93.
dsindc 2 years ago
What truly irritates me about you beyond the rather blatant lack of authenticity, is that it's just this sort of fetishism that leads to the Mussolinis and the Hitlers. In my experience, anyone who has experienced battle rarely celebrates it. It's true: war is hell. Yes, the soldiers did their duty, and THAT should be celebrated. I would be waving my flag too. But I detest the cowards who find this exciting, enough to put others in needless wars. Are you taking notes?
dsindc 2 years ago
The immaturity lies in a personality that never fully developed. It relies on fetishes as evidenced by a celebration of all things involving 'militarism'. There's an almost childish glee at the sight of goose stepping Russian troops, or clips of the Riefenstahl propoganda movies. There is something almost Walter Mittyesque going on- Mitty a meek, mild man with a vivid fantasy life: daydreams imagining himself a wartime pilot. Could this be you, "sipping Scotch, smoking Cuban cigars"? How sad.
dsindc 2 years ago
I never said I liked war. You merely assumed that. The Canadian armed forces are not about conquering but about peace keeping. They serve our country with great professionalism and not to mention offer humanitarian aid in times of international crisis. i.e. Haiti.
I celebrate the military because I was a navy officer for a few years after university. I am extremely proud of my service and proud of the traditions and values bestowed upon all members of our armed forces.
Maxobillion 2 years ago
Oh Maxobillion, read what was written old chum. Is the ascot a bit tight today? You wrote the following: "Most liberals do not like militarism or anything paramilitary". I suspect you're correct. I wrote nothing about not supporting the military. You are celebrating "militarism". There is a difference. People who do so are generally projecting feelings of inadequacy into something they perceive as strong and rugged. Or they're gay and they find it sexually stimulating. Which describes you?
dsindc 2 years ago
Most liberals Maxobillion, have grown up. They are emotionally healthy enough to refrain from sophomoric militaristic delusions. Your life must be dull. How long can one can sit in one's Queen Anne chair, sniffing quality Scotch, whilst watching spiffy big brutes in their uniforms. Oh dear me! One is getting moist just pondering it isn't one ! Get a life Max, and grow up.

when they march in dress they march differently, and as long as were not goose stepping its all good.
Johnalexgray 2 years ago
they march the same as the british?
sirdan180 2 years ago
why wouldn't we...our military tradition heavily incorporated with british tradition
ChicoAlpha 2 years ago
Yes, and the Quebecois dislike it intensely. I will never understand why Canada continues to celebrate its British heritage when such a large part of your country finds it so offensive. Its not something that unifies Canada, it does just the opposite as evidenced by polls taken in Quebec year after year. Why don't you create a unique identity? I find Canadian soldiers in bear skin hats a bit silly. But I suspect the Quebecois find it humiliating. And yes, I'm American.
dsindc 2 years ago
Don't get me wrong ChicoAlpha, I've been to Canada, and like it lots. I just don't see what good it does to mimic the British when the country has TWO major cultural ancestors. I don't blame the Quebecois for wanting to leave.
dsindc 2 years ago
Why throw away long/hard earned traditions for the sake of a few frogs being offended?
Someloke8895 2 years ago
Someloke8895, it's your country ( I assume ). But the "frogs" represent about 20% of your population. Have the "frogs" not fought in wars Canadians of all types fought in? But this is an issue that does not involve my country, so do what you will.

Does anyone know why the canadian army forms up in ranks of three? in army cadets we always form in ranks of three it can't be four has to be three. Has it something to do with the battle on the plains of abrham? just a guess cause the britsh formed up in 3 ranks for that battle. If you could tell me that would be great thanks.
sgtliam10 2 years ago
I think its just cause thats the easiest way to march troops. While still making it look good of course. When I was in CFB Borden, we marched in 2 ranks but we only had a platoon of 40.

just outta curiousity, is the soldiers in formation marching in a ceremonial way or is that how the canadian military marches? im in the USAF and its slightly different than how we march, especially the arm swing. never no tho it could be the angle
pmia88195 2 years ago
nevermind i just figured it out, lol. watched a video of the british army marching. didnt know the canadians kept british drill
pmia88195 2 years ago
Hiya, no, it's not ceremonial, this how we always march. Arms come shoulder high, thumbs on top of the fist. It's patterned after the British way of marching. We used to salute like the Brits with palms facing outward but changed a while back to palm facing down, forefinger almost touching the eyebrow. Pretty much the same as you yanks. :)
mact50 2 years ago
mact50 The Royal Navy certainly does not salute palm forward, traditionally The Royal Navy salutes back of hand out, this was becauase in the days of sail the palm was always discoloured with tar from the lines on the sails
Dhbrydon 2 years ago
I didn't know that. How interesting. Thanks!
mact50 2 years ago
not alot of people know the story about the palms out....no chance of us hiding blades anyway...to proud for that..;)
racecardriver467 2 years ago
It is a different march, but that's also typical of any march. We exagerate the arm motion a little more, except for a few ceremonial movements such as slow march.

what size is the canadian army? the irish defence forces numbers around 25000.canadian army looks very professional
adam25124002 2 years ago 2
Our forces number around 94,000 (I think). Their among the best trained in the world.
samrulz7 2 years ago 8
yeah last time i checked we had about 150,000 including reserves
Primeau12 2 years ago 5
Sounds about right. And I believe the most we've ever had was 1.1 Million, during WWII.
samrulz7 2 years ago 5
@adam25124002
