it's really terrible. I remember that my grandma told me to kill a chicken and pull its guts. I could not do it because it's too cruel. Of course, after that my grandma understood and did it for me. :(
One Christmas a friend of the family gave us 2 chickens and a turkey. Since the whole family was going to be home it helped alot. However they were still alive. So we had to do all the grizzly job and in the freezing cold and snow. The best Christmas dinner I've ever had.
@swatson1190 I once worked as a freelance axeman down the road for a local butcher - I'd get the birds, cut their heads off, gut and pluck them then sell them for $5 per bird. At 20 birds a day I made enough to buy one for self.
gives you appreciation for where your food comes from...Turkey's don't come naturally prerapped and prepackaged---hard work...But Turkeys sure taste good!!!
@apdaoud Absolutely! Same with goose and duck. There isn't that much meat on it, of course, and it's bloody hard to pick out of all the neckbones but it's enormously tasty!
You'd think by this point, he'd have gotten out of the habit of sniffing anything on this show that comes out of an animal, this has to be the fifth time he's gone into dry heaves as a direct result of inhaling the bouquet of some random gob of offal.
@yerk3 But that's what's so great about Tony - his natural, irrepressible curiosity ("It'll probably smell awful, but awful in what way?"). I would imagine that's one of the reasons why he keeps doing these shows, though he's often cold, miserable, and not infrequently terrified.
I once spent the week before xmas in 1982 gutting turkeys for a local butcher, i worked 7 in the morning till 5.30 in the evening for 5 pounds per day.
So for the week i got 25 quid and half a pork pie that he hadn't sold by xmas eve.
forgive me for asking...what does that break down to in dollars? dosen't sound like much...and from raising these guys--Turkeys I mean...I know you worked really hard that day...hard hard work...
I think I have a CUNNING plan!!! ;)

instead of plucking a chicken, you put them in boiling water, and the feathers just brush off, i was surprise that they dont do that with turkeys

@apdaoud I guess its sold separately as a cheaper meat for soup base or something like that...

@apdaoud Many of the turkeys and chickens I've seen have come with the neck included, though not attached - it makes a wonderful base for gravy.
