The fact that Su-33's don't relay on catapult asisted take off from deck, from my point of view, gives a good advantage because of the less time / crew efford needed to launch and recover aircrafts. Plus the su-33 is probably the best carrier based multi-roll figther in the world. Even today. Althou the f-18 Supper Hornet is very good too.
@lonewolfgabo On the other hand, the fighters always take off underarmed and underfueled, which means they're less effective in combat, and have shorter range/flight time. The ramp can't lift heavy jets. In full armament, and with full fuel tanks those jets would not be able to take off from from this ship.
@wimpog97 If they takeoff, with out a full load of fuel, then where do they get refueled. Is there a tanker in the air. If so, where does the tanker come from, its not launched off of the same flight deck, they don't have catapults on the side ramp... do they?
@texaca I don't think there is a tanker that refuels them in the air. Even if there is one, it has to take off from the ground as this ramp will not lift it. This particular ship has no catapults, so its fighters have to come back to the ship to refuel.
September 5, 2010 died legendary pilot - Hero of Russia Sergey Melnikov. He was a pilot who had taught take off and land on the deck of aircraft carrier Admiral Kuznetsov "Su-33.Pervym in Russia carried out 100 and 200 landings on the deck of an aircraft carrier. Admiral Kuznetsov is not carrier. That's an aircraft-cruiser with nuclear weapons and more than 500 rockets. (Alsow Admiral Kuznetsov has 15 × Su-33, 5 × Su-25UTG/UBP and 24 × helicopters.) But a brainless american aren't able to understand the difference.
Yeah because the brainless Americans would rather deliver nuclear weapons from 90 aircraft versus one big floating target like the Russians. Great post!

@zvast They want to start build mass amounts against the Middle East. Or atleast thats what they say. There has been some wonder as to weither they will then turn to former Soviet Union states. The carrier is also capable of shooting down ICBM's. Whatever the purpose is, they are trying to show that thier military might has not been completely lost after WW2.
@zvast While it is old, they are still trying to make it more efficient. We dont know if they were sold to china but it is possible. The cost was out wieghing weither it was worth it or not. I personally think they are still testing it.

Well if plane is able to take of without "steam catapult", it seems russians have pretty good aircrafts, so why do they need thous catapults.
But none russian carrier is better than Nimitz class aircraft carriers...IMHO
Cheburdac 3 years ago
Well, it's like this:
Without catapults, Admiral Kuznetsov cannot launch strike aircraft with heavy loads.
So with only one ramp and light load, what is it good for?
Just few dog fights?
zvast 3 years ago
Every plane who launched from carriers will refueled by tanker in the air. You will never see a fully laden aircraft who launch from a carrier.
Catapults must be always calibrated......etc.

@zvast Its meant as a carrier to be capable of defending itself against enemy boats and aircraft. In offense its got its merits, but an enemy fleet would take it out quickly. It was started as a test. Now that they have one that is fully operational they will be building more.
641Dragon 1 year ago
@641Dragon Due to the size of Russia, they better build something like 100.
But who is threatening Russia? Big powers may use ICMB's. USA doesn't atack big nations. Maybe Mongolia or Georgia?
zvast 1 year ago
@zvast They want to start build mass amounts against the Middle East. Or atleast thats what they say. There has been some wonder as to weither they will then turn to former Soviet Union states. The carrier is also capable of shooting down ICBM's. Whatever the purpose is, they are trying to show that thier military might has not been completely lost after WW2.
641Dragon 1 year ago
@641Dragon WW2 was over 65 years ago. They are kind of behind.
zvast 1 year ago
@zvast Yes. All of the powers that were fighting are still struggling to have the most power. Its the national pride and braging rights.
641Dragon 1 year ago
@641Dragon But Kuznetsov is already 25 years old and other were either sold to China or canceled.
For defense, as you mentioned, maybe the helicopter carriers are better.
But they are also old.
zvast 1 year ago
@zvast While it is old, they are still trying to make it more efficient. We dont know if they were sold to china but it is possible. The cost was out wieghing weither it was worth it or not. I personally think they are still testing it.

@Cheburdac the catapults are for bigger strike planes. the su-33 shown is a light fighter

"is that no one russian factory havn't be able to do it.."
BULLSHIT
It's because Soviet aircraft had another purpose (air defence with some attack capabilities)

Except SU-33's can't use them because Kuznetsov doesn't have catapults to launch them fully loaded.

You need catapults to launch fully loaded bombers.

einfach super teil :)
