As a former member of the Way (son of a minister, now an atheist), I can tell you that many members of the group have made sincere efforts to read, understand, and correctly interpret the Bible. You might notice many of the song lyrics actual come from scripture. The Way isn't a cult any more than all non-mainstream sects of Christianity... and those who say this isn't Christian have rigid, dogmatic, and incorrect definitions.
