The other weird thing in earlier episodes that is not talked about here is in the episode when the doll is coming in the mail. Chuckie quotably says, "My MOM says I came from the hospital.". I truly believe the writers initially had her alive and just decided she was dead in the newer seasons, there is no more story to it than that.

it is possible she battled cancer for months. like, she got diagnosed when chuckie was an infant. the first lady could have either been her in a first remission/a sister who was helping him. and his mom might have come home because there was nothing they could do. so chuckie would not have a lot of memories of her not being sick.

I honestly thought the first woman was Chaz's sister.

If you've ever watched Dexter, Deb helps Dexter raise his child after his wife died. It's not uncommon, and Chaz doesn't seem like the type of person to like to talk to people about his personal life.

I think that Drew and his friends might have started calling her "Chuckie's mom" for a while, maybe because she was around so often to support Chaz after his wife died. They seem like they all just met from sending their kids to daycare together

@SethHisoka She probably is his sister who helped take care of Chuckie while Melinda was in the hospital. I mean it's very unlikely that two parents AND a child would look EXACTLY alike.

My theory is that Melinda DID exist and that Rugrats fans sent in fanmail to Nick Magazine, asking about why Chuckie's mom was mentioned in that one episode, but was never seen. So they made the Mother's Day episode, explaining a bit about her background, and then made the second movie.

From memeory and rewatching Rugrats it was explained that his mother was a buiness woman (i believed it was aimed at organic issues could be wrong) and that she left Chaz one day because he wasn't work orientated as she would of liked (him being the stay at home dad) i've actualy never remembered the mother being explained as 'dead'

The original conception of cartoons was to have animated productions designed for adult viewing however over time that changed to children obviously.

That being said, it shows in programs like Rugrats and so many others that have good solid story structure that a cartoon can apply to adults and children. Appreciating it as a child takes the fun out of it...appreciating it now makes you wiser and feel the joy of viewing it deeper.

Those were very early eppisodes though and they probably didn't originaly intend for him to not have a mother.

The moment Chaz looks back to everyone (silent and stunned) after Chuckie shows him the picture and Didi telling him they can miss her together fucking killed me all over again. In a way I'm a bit angry because I've forgotten about so many moments like this from my childhood and the only way I come across them again are looking at stupid meme videos about Stu making chocolate pudding.

i think the lady chaz was talking to in the beginning was a friend or maybe a sister coming to help out while chuckie's mother was sick.. and maybe his mom wasn't dead yet when stu said both of chuckie's parents were going to pick him up. you have to remember, the show is pretty much told from the point of view of the babies. maybe she died and they just never let the kids know how it.
