  • Dude, either you have king kong hands or your guitar necks are super slim. Rock on!

  • Why does one of your guitars have a hole in its headstock?

  • Does Tech 21 make a pedal that emulates a Fender Blackface? I've been looking at the Wampler 65 Overdrive but I wanted to know if there's anything else like that on the market

  • Awesome Playing bro cute Kid More Distortion and overdrive Pedals would be cool.Peace N Love Rock on Bugerman.Maxx Masters New York City Rocker and Actor.

  • Hi what a great demo here thank you ! What exact pick up do you have on the tele from brierley handwound cause i like the tone really!!

  • Oh well, Never mind. Maybe put the routing info at the beginning of the video instead of the end. Then incredibly inpatient people like me will get the info they need before their OCD kicks in and they need to start asking questions.

  • Are you going into the front of an amp, if so what kind? Or are you going into the Power Amp in/Effects Return?

Or are you going direct into something? If so, what?

Please add that info to the text when you change guitars.

    Great vids and playing. Thanks.

Just please include what it's connected to and what if any settings on that unit should be mentioned.

  • what song at 1:25?

  • @trokeification Layla by Eric Clapton

  • What is the song at 2.30 plz ?

  • @GuitarRock6 don't fear the reaper by blue oyster cult

  • Great video, very informative. Question: Which input are you plugging the British into on your audio interface, the line input or instrument input?

  • Lovely tunes Lovely playing man peace =]

  • Great playing! ... this pedal sounds super sweet! Very marshally. I heard it goes from JTM45 all the way to JCM800! But i have a couple of questions regarding this pedal... does it use a 9v power adapter? Also, does it clean up nicely with the guitar's volume knob? ... and finally, lol, is it pick attack sensitive? I'm basically torn between this and the Catalinbread Dirty Little Secret mkii. You have both, which do you prefer? (Basically looking for a every-era-marshall-in-a-box pedal lol)

  • sounds good, i like the california more based on your video.

  • THANK YOU THANK YOU for not doing the whole video with the neck pickup and with the drive cranked like 90% of the other demo videos out there. I bought the Leeds after watching your video because you COVERED ALL the voicings that can be covered in a short video. Great job. Your daughter is so funny and cheeky like dad. Thanks for the great vids. I trust your demos. Well I bought one! Very accurate. The Leeds does make an amazing OD box with the emulation turned off.

  • Sounds awesome. :)

Can these pedals (sansamp series) be played through another amp (a real amp in a live situation?

  • @LaCuentadeLuciano

you certainly can, but you just have to be careful you don't color your tone too much with the pre-amp in your regular amp. having one continuously set to the same settings while only changing the other would allow you to find whatever tone you want while avoiding the confusion when you switch on or off your sansamp and find the tone something you didnt expect because of the changed settings on the other pre-amp.

    make sense?

  • You got a pretty good imitation of Clapton's tone for "Layla", but the song was actually played through a fender champ. Just a cool little fact. :)

  • This pedal saved my day. I am a jazz and blues guy. My combo amp broke 2 gigs that evening., first time using it.Dinner jazz & then blues gig later. Borrowed daughters Line6 spider -- clean all controls flat. For the jazz gig. I turned the character way down like at 2 or 3 then, boosted the mid, drive at 1 oclock, cut the bass and treble to around 8 oclock. Sounded like an old bassman warm tone. Then on the blues gig , the character to 12 oclock. more drive. Me and bandmates were surprised .

  • Is this DI? no amp correct?

  • Hi! Great Video!!! You've got some mad skills. Not sure if the tone is atributable to the SansAmp, or your playing.

I have a question for you... I'm looking for a good tubeless solution to drive a Tech 21 Power Engine. I was thinking about using a Boss ME-70, or Some of these character series units, with pedals (comp & OD) in front of it. What are your thoughts?

  • many posibilities..... grat toy

  • Good demo. Cute kid. thanks

  • please tell me, what is the name of the songs that vooc run? I look for them already have too much time

  • Comment removed

  • Excellent demo. I'm looking for a JCM800 style pedal and was originally set on an MI Audio Crunchbox. However, this appears to do this style and alot more-which would you advise? By the way, not all Brits are posh!

  • nice choice of licks man, let your daughter wreck one of your guitar, you will be a youtube hero :D :D

  • Good demo!

I was just wondering how it feels to play with that pedal...

Does it really feel like playing through a real marshall or is it just like all other emulators?and BTW is this analog or digital?

    Thanks! :)

  • @Nimrod9458 It's analog and nothing *feels* like playing a real Marshall. As far as the sound goes, though, you can sure park right next to the real thing. :)

  • I really enjoyed your video,do you think it would work well with my vox ac 15?I love it but sometimes i just want more gain than it has.The sounds of the pedal on your video are great, love them all, just curious if you think they would sound similar through my amp. Thanks so much

  • Hi there is there any way to get this pedal to feedback? Because it just squeals when turned on. Also I can´t get it loud enough to keep the balance between the clean channel and the switched effect. Any suggestions please?

  • hey, burgerman,

I love your videos...they're not only full of useful info and great tones, but of humour as well. I'm looking for a pedal to reproduce classic Marshall tones. I already own a Wampler Plexidrive and have been thinking about adding either the tech21 british or the Wampler Plextortion. Which one do you like better in front of a clean tube amp?

    Thanks!

  • @mfrieauff In front of a clean tube amp? That would be the Wampler. The Tech 21 stuff is great, but it works best (for me) as a preamp device and not so much a regular stompbox. YMMV, of course. Thanks for the kind words. :)

  • @burgerman666 sorry to bother you but oes the speaker emulation stay on whan the pedal is turned of ? what kind of bypass is it?

  • @Jcub90 Hey, that's cool, good question! From the manual: "Buffered bypass eliminates the shortcomings associated with “true bypass” (pops and clicks,

and high-end loss when multiple pedals are connected together), as well as signal loss associated with other types of switching circuits."

    There you go. :)

  • I own an Original Sansamp Classic which I enjoy a lot and I wonder if it means something to get this British box ?

Of course the Classic can do much more but can I get the same sounds out of my sansamp classic as those available in the british pedal ?

Thanks, keep on your reviews ;)

  • @marcanb28 The original will give you close tones but if you want to hone straight into Marshall world, you're better off grabbing one of these IMO.

  • at 4'47 I can hear Slash

  • Im sorry for this question im new at this. How do you use it? Thanks!!!

  • @claudiodifazio14 There's a link for the owners manual and settings in the 'info' section of this video. Repeating it here would just be.. um, repeating it here. :)

  • @Burgerman666 Thanks alot!!!!

  • Do you know how this compare to the Tonebone Hot British?

  • @baskethilt Nope. I asked Radial for some demo units and they declined. Sorry.

  • @baskethilt hey, I have a plexitube (which is basically a 2 channel hot british) and I would say each of these has their place. the hot british would be better if you were plugging into an amp and were gonna mic it, or just play live, but this is INFINITELY better for a situation where you're going directly in.

  • @baskethilt I had the Tonebone British and Classic, they were just okay. I think these sound better.

  • hey burg can you get a silver jubilee sound out of it?

  • @littlewing62 Not sure; I've never tried one. Sorry!

  • @Burgerman666 it's a juiced up jcm800 basically, but it still has it's own unique voicing. it's a rare amp, hope one day you try one. i fel inlove with the tone but my coin purse wasn't big enough so i was hoping for a pedal to emulate it. thanks anyways.

  • I hope that little girl's getting payed! xD

  • is this better than sansamp clasic??? (i prefer grunge sound ... alice in chains ,pearl jam and soundgarden style distorsion)???

  • @musicmaniac434 I wouldn't say 'better'. But it's definitely more focused on the Marshall thing and not much else. So if Marshall is your bag, probably go for this.

  • The sound quality of these reviews are among the best I've heard on Youtube yet! Not to mention these character series pedals,I think I will be buying them all.

  • what song you playing first?)

  • What the riff at 1:25 to 1:34 ? please

  • @TOTOsupra Layla?

  • @Burgerman666 Yes Thanks :D

  • Awesome effort! Thanks for the detailed review. Are you going direct into a recording device or are you going through a mic'd amp?

  • @disciullo77 Thank you! This video was shot running the Liverpool directly to a sound card (M-Audio ProFire 610) and then to the computer. You should expect similar results when using it is a direct device (to house) in a live situation.

  • Hey Burger, great videos. I'm running a lp standard with a twin reverb. Favourite band is the Allmans. Which of these new tech21's would you say would be a good fit?

  • @gibsonrd1 Hmm. You might be better off with a regular stomp box if you're going to run it to the front end of your Twin. I'm thinking along the lines of a Machine Head Pedals 72 Degree OD..

  • @Burgerman666 Thank you Burger. The MHP line of pedals are amazing. I'm thinking the Tech 21's are more of a modeler if i understand correctly. Take care

  • @Burgerman666 Thank you Burger. The MHP line of pedals are amazing. I'm thinking the Tech 21's are more of a modeler if i understand correctly. Take care

  • Great demo, and terrific playing! Thanks very much!

  • Hi - great tone!!! 2 questions: 1) How do I connect this to my laptop and speakers? Can you please explain the chain connection wise? Can I put it via my external Guitar Rig soundcard or is something else needed?

    2) Can I connect it in front of my old Marshall 70s combo as well? Thanks & regards, Jonas , Sweden

  • @JonasSweden1 Thanks for the kind words. 1) British runs to M-Audio ProFire 610. ProFire 610 connected to MacBook Pro via FireWire. Speakers also connected to ProFire outputs. I don't have any experience with Guitar Rig so I can't comment, sorry. 2) Yes, you can use it as a regular stompbox but you'll have to tame the tone controls somewhat to reduce the British' top end. Cheers, BK.

  • @Burgerman666

Hi, thanks for feedback, greatly appreciated. Appearently there's a local dealer here in Sweden close to Stockholm so will give them a bell. Take care, cheers/ J

  • Tech 21 makes some sweet gear. You really don't need to drop big bucks on an expensive amp. These pedals do a great job and sound better thelan other amp emulators on the market. Cute that you got your daughter to do the intro as a British child. Would of been funny to have her ask for more porridge.

  • awesome clips! you've got me seriously considering getting rid of my tube amp and getting two or three of these babies. could you do a demo of the "oxford" sometime?

also, what computer audio interface would you recommend? i use a macbook pro

  • @ricebowlranch I run an M-Audio ProFire 610 also with a Macbook Pro. Thanks for the kind words. :)

  • @Burgerman666

would you recommend any other interface besides the m-audio? it seems kind of expensive. i mean, i'd be able to afford it when i sell my amp, but i just wanna be frugal, you know?

btw, this is azn_hobo from TGP ;)

  • @ricebowlranch Sure. Presonus, Tascam, M-Audio - all of those guys make smaller but no less quality sounding interfaces. I just like the ProFire because it's a FireWire device and has plenty of ins and outs. But if you're just doing one track at a time you won't need that multi facility so you may as well save your money.

I forgot to answer the other part of your question earlier, my apologies. Yes I'll be covering all of the new Tech 21 stuff shortly. :)

  • Awesome clip - thanks for the demo. I own this pedal and run it through a Roland keyoard amp for home use. Sounds great in that application and as a pre-amp into a laptop (as shown here).

Question: Can the pedal pull off a convincing Marshall sound when used in a pedal chain in front of a Fender style amp? I'd love to get that Marshall crunch and the Fender clean out of one setup. Great vid. Cheers!

  • @alipopo No, not in my experience. Not without some serious tweaking of the top end. It can be used this way but it doesn't excel in that configuration. The new ones have SansAmp override buttons that should allow better integration with your setup. We'll see shortly as they're all being sent to me for demo in the next week or so. Stay tuned..

  • Wait, so what would be the chain if this isnt a regular guitar pedal? Does it go Guitar>Head>Emulator>Cheap Speakers?

  • @nubbinnoob Guitar > British > Power amp > speakers or Guitar > British > console/computer/powered speakers as per the video which was Guitar > British > M-Audio ProFire 610 > Computer.

  • Hey thanks for the demo. I'm wondering if you can help me decide between the Catalinbread DLS and the Tech 21 British. Which one is best for a live gig? Which one would you recommend? Thanks.

  • how many gears did you have man ^^ !?! i have just a bunch of tech 21 and digitech pre amp product and no amplifier ^^ bu uuuuuh !!!

  • Hey Burgerman, I have to ask.... I notice this thing has a cabinet sim. My past experience with modelers has been that the cab sim creates phasing issues when played through a guitar cab (one uses a guitar cab model and playing out guitar speakers). This is that "digital" sound people complain about. I've noticed on expensive stuff like Eleven Rack you can turn off the cab sim and run the amp model through a power amp out a cab. Can you turn off the cab sim? or is it best out a FRFR monitor?

  • This one's definitely best run through full range stuff. However, Tech 21 are offering speaker emulation on/off facility on all future Character Series pedals - Leeds, Oxford, etc. We may see a revision to include the same on/off on the current series in future, but I'm not sure. I guess it will depend how much stock they have sitting in their warehouse.

  • good job! nice tone!

  • wow ! i have owned an original sansamp forever. watching this vid makes me want one of these pedals now. anyone notice the intro too this sounds like def leppard , bringin on the heartache? you need too explore that tone some more. also the vh tone is a little muffled, need too fix that a little. and i vote for sadie too the be the tech 21 spokesgirl! that girl has a future in t.v or movies! keep the vid's comin bro.

  • I don't know if it's worth $150 to me if I'm just gonna use the JCM 800 tone

  • Is this pedal better than Box of Rock?

  • It's a completely different beast really. The BOR is an overdrive/distortion whereas this will do that too, but really it is a SansAmp - a device that you can use in place of an amp. Very versatile. ;) Thanks for watching.

  • Hey burgerman-

nice tones for sure! But is it true that these character pedals don't work/ sound as good going straight into an amp? I really need a good OD/ distortion to front-end into my plexi RI at low volumes, when I can't crank it. My tube screamer and SD-1 are OK but I don't really care too much for their voicings- either too harsh or too many low mids.

    Any suggestions?

  • With a Plexi I'd probably go for a Tim or Timmy (Paul Cochrane, Nashville). They were specifically designed and voiced to kick the front end of a Marshall and they do so better than any other pedal I've tried. Just my two cents! :) Thanks for watching.

  • hahahaha, this is an awesome pedal demo. Your daughter has a lot of personality. Happy travels bro.

  • WOW when you played that layla riff at the start I have to say you nailed that eric clapton tone man!

I'm also looking at the Tri Ac pedal so I can get the versatility and ease of use of having more than one channel. It would be cool if you could do a demo of it coz you demo gear very well indeed :) I know you haven't got the pedal; if you get it you should demo it! :) Note for the future lol Thanks.

  • Congrats for you video (I also loved the one of California). Let me ask you a couple of questions... What do you think of the tones from Tri ac ? Do you have a video from it ? Comparing Marshall (from British) and Tri ac and Mesa B (from California) with Tri ac, what do you think ?

    Thanks a lot...

  • Hi there and thanks for the kind words. I can't help you with the Tri-AC, I'm afraid. It's one of the few from Tech 21 that I haven't tried yet. Hopefully this year sometime.. Cheers.

  • Your videos are fantastic, some of the best on Youtube! Well recorded, well played, and great little touches with the presentation :) A pleasure to watch.

  • Thank you, that's very kind. Have a great New Year! BK :)

  • killer killer killer!! My will be hear tomorrow

  • do you think that you could get a good "money for nothing" sound out of this pedal?

  • Sure, just stick a cocked wah in front of it and off you go. You could probably do a good Mick Ronson this way, too.

  • @ 8:53 what song are those harmonics or were they improvised? Sounded like Van Halen

  • Yes, there's a definite tip o' the hat to EVH their.

  • Great demo. And the intro by your daughter.....fabulous. She's gorgeous! Got you wrapped around her little finger has she, mate?!

  • Who, Sadie? Noooo... :)

  • thanks for your video reviews of these pedals! the bass vt sounds great! this british sounds very close to the real thing (especially when you turn the drive up), the liverpool sounds spanky and sings too, the blonde is pristine, bluesy and immaculate and the california sounds congested and lifeless, much like a real mesa boogie haha.

  • You're really some of the best playing that I've heard in a long long time. You're good!!

  • Thank you, you are too kind! :)

  • Dude, great chops! The JCM 800 settings in my opinion sound best on the British pedal. I'm looking to get an '80's "SoCal Marshall Mod" sound, that does not "Fart Out" on the low end, and does not "Fizz Out" on the upper mid and treble ranges. In other words, a sound that is still solid for "Power Chording". Could you use the JCM 800 settings as a "Baseline", and make minor adjustments, and go from there? Great Demo. I like the British better than the California, cause it's not too dark .Thanks.

  • Thanks for the kind words. Yes, I think you got it in one with the British v Cali assumption for your needs. The Cali is indeed darker when it goes into saturation. Matter of fact, I have to say that it could use some improvement in the extreme dirt area. The British is the one to get for the sound you're looking for. Go for it. Happy New Year!

  • how is the british's clean sound ? You didnt play on the clean sound.i wonder it.wanna hear the clean ? can you a video upload on the clean sound ?

    thanks man.

  • I really didn't want to see the treble booster. I'm interested in the tech 21.

  • You'll get over it. Back to the Bloodhound Gang. ;)

  • Hey man: good job with this test.

Different guitar, different setttings, I really appreciate it.

    Thank you !

    Enrico.

  • Anyone know what post processing is going on here?

At the very least I hear some reverb.

Is the SansAmp plugged into another amp of some sort? Speakers or speaker sims, etc.?

  • OK, spoke to soon, the tech details are at the end.

Wow, no speaker or speaker sim...

  • hahaha ! I love the presentation by your daughter ! She's awsome !! "Have a closer look ! Ta Ta !" hahaha ! So sweet.

  • Nice demo.

Does it do well being boosted with a pedal?

Or will it clean up with med / high gain settings, using the volume knob?

    cheers

  • It does both of those things pretty well. If you back off the gain a little you can then give it a shove with a drive pedal of your choice. It reacts in much the same way as an amp would, which is its attraction. Clean up with the volume knob is OK, too.

  • Thanks for the reply :-)

  • great demo, how well will it do a plexi for that jimi hendrix sound?

  • It's really clear. great for web video. I may have to get one.

  • excellent video. what kind of camera are you using?

  • Thanks! The camera is a very humble Panasonic NV-GS120. It's not responsible for the audio though - Logic and Waves take care of that bit.

  • Hey Brett, this is FreaqyFrequency from the TalkBass forums.

Did you ever get a chance to test this baby out with bass? I'm trying to put together a MUSE cover band, and I know that Chris W. uses Marshalls exclusively, and uses the drive section in his DBS heads as one of his main tones, so I'm pretty interested in one of these to replace the VT Bass with.

    Thanks,

    -Sean

  • Sean, I haven't yet, I'm sorry. If I get a chance on the weekend I'll cut a little clip for you. Give me the name of an easy Muse track with your desired sound to d/l so I've got a reference. And don't laugh at my crap bass playing!! Heheh.

  • Hmm...well, the thing is that there are very few tracks I can point to which he isn't using another dirt pedal, his synth, or his Russian Muff. I do know, however, that his live rig consists of four heads, two clean and two driven. I'll see what I can find.

  • I bought one of these, for guitar, I thought it would be cool to try it on bass.. you will be happy with it. :-) You can dial tones that will not suck any frequencies out like some pedals. They level and EQ is really pristine, the drive and character can take it way way into crazy distortion.

    Joe

  • which character pedal do you prefer?

  • If I'm using one of these as a basic clean sound with which to place dirt and modulation pedals before or after then I usually go for the Blonde or California because they'll give me a nice clean Twin or MK2 Boogie. That's my preferred 'live' set-up. However, if I'm recording then it could be any of them because , basically, I have a choice of Boogie, Vox, Fender, Ampeg or Marshall amps - in all of their models, clean and dirty. What more could you want?

  • ha ha I love that little Blue oyster cult in there- great sounds. Could the high gain on this reack Van Halen/ early metallica level?

  • Definitely the early EVH, yeah. All you'd need to do is add some vintage plate reverb to it as per the studio recordings and you'd be off. Of course, it will depend largely on your right arm and the pickup you hit it with as well. I get pretty good results out of a 7.3kohm vintage spec humbucker.

The Metallica sound I'm not so sure about. You might be better off with the California for that one. I'm pretty sure they used Boogies back in those days but correct me if I'm wrong.

  • Well I was talking early Metallica around 83 where they had the Jose mods on their Marshall 1959slp before it was stolen. they started using boogies I think in 1985.

  • Aha! Of course; the British will do this. You just need a nice honky humbucker in front of it. When I'm better I'll see if I can pull a 'Trapped Under Ice' or a 'Fire' and up it. There's something to look forward to - for me!

  • Nice- make sure to add a ride the lightning riff in there- especially James' fast rythm after the intro- looking forward to it.

  • You got it. Damn, as soon as I get better this is the first project I'll do. I saw Metallica in '88 on the JFA tour and it was unfrickingbelievable. I haven't been able to watch them since... funnily enough.

  • 88 was brutal, there's a good video of Sanatarium and James' voice is BRUTAL.

  • Wow man! Thanks so much for this great demo! You definitely did a great job and knew what you were talking about. Awesome work.

  • Thanks Matt. Once I'm better I'm going to cover the rest of the Tech 21 stuff. Can't wait. Cheers.

  • would this be good for a led zeppelin/deep purple sound, but through a peavey classic 30 amp???

  • Sure. You might have to tweak it a little, but that's what this pedal has in spades - tons of tweakability. :)

  • I think I'm addicted to pedals lol I have like 3 not counting this british one. This probably the best demo I've heard of it.

  • grazie

  • E 'per me un grande piacere. Thank you for watching.

  • Great mate! Do you think the British pedal will work for a AC/DC sound? Also, do you use a amplifier for this videos or do you just recording direct into the computer?

  • Hell yes. All you need is a right arm like Malcolm's and you're away. ;)

These clips were recorded straight to the computer via an M-Audio ProFire 610 interface.

  • Great! Thanks!

  • This pedal is next on my list. I have the VT bass, and it's the bass pedal of the future. The British is no less amazing. BTW, keep Sadie in your vids...she's funny! EM-U-LA-TAAAAAHHHH!!

  • excellent demo. this is definitely helping me decide which one to purchase! and nice chops!

  • Thanks all. Always happy to help. :) I'm hoping I can cover some more T21 stuff in the coming weeks. Thanks for watching! :) B

  • nice, like the van halen demo at the end

  • one of the best guitar demos i ever seen
