  • I hope this isn't clueless question. It seems as if playing the fiddle would require holding a little bit still to get it right, and at the same time, you can't help but move. How on earth do you fiddle players manage?

  • @LanceThruster When I was learning to play, no one ever told me to stand still. Bad habits are hard to break.

  • Not only does it sound great, you look like you're having a lot of fun too!

  • Cajun, all the way! You rock. Thanks

It's about 6 years old and has a pleasant tone.

  • man id love to jam with you, but im in australia!

  • If I first heard this on a tape or a CD for the first time, I would have sworn that the music coming out of that fiddle must be from a true cajun! I'm a fiddle player myself, but I want to get into playing cajun. I guess I must have seen this video 3 times in a row! Cajun Cooking! Keep playin' man, you're an awsome fiddler!

  • I really enjoy playing the blues and anything a bit rocky. I suppose that's why the Cajun style of playing feels so right to play on the fiddle. Loads of room for expression and improvisation.

  • Go man, go! Weeeeeeeeeeedawgie that ther'n some good fiddlin' son!

  • I love how your swayin and gettin all into it! great job!!!

  • man you absolutely rock! you are an awesome musician!!!!

Weeeeeeeeeeedawgie! You can play on my porch anytime! Pull up that chair and break out the rosin, son! Let's get to bowin'!

  • Awsome job. You would fit right in at home. Hell you had me a hollerin lol.

  • Come to Eunice La, Liberty Theater, the only Cajun Music Broadcast in the USA. I moved here not to long ago and am learning Cajun fiddle myself.. I'm starting from the very basic.. I will post a link for you to see our Cajun Jam session at Music store here in Eunice , its owned by Mark Savoy , world known Accordian Maker and player. Also A Master fiddler, Harry LaFlure who started the "Cajun French Music Association ..

  • Great job of fiddling! What is the name of the tune? Thanks and hope to hear more of your playing!

  • The first tune is called 'Cajun Cooking' and there is a midi file of this tune somewhere on the web. The second tune is called ' See you later Alligator' which I originally learnt from the version sung by Bill Hailey and the Comets.

Don't forget the link I put in the description notes for the basic 'Cajun Cooking' melody. However, these do not include the double stops.

  • Although I'm not a Cajun fiddler, I think you've done a terrifiic job of catching spirit of Cajun fiddling. I really enjoy your playing.

    Les Jensen

  • Hahahaha fantastic job! Its a real foot stomper. I admire your handling of that bow!

  • Why apologize for your interpretation of real cajun fiddle players? You are pretty good at it after you get warmed up. Good bow, mate.

  • HAHA!! If it were only that easy, I'd be driving to heathrow even now, cash in hand to buy a plane ticket...)

I've actually been for a grand total of about a week..) Long hard road ahead, but I'm happy to take it. My gran's Creole, and I'm furiously trying to get good enough to play for her one day.

  • Comment removed

  • that's awesome. You're obviously the devil, where do I sign to play like that??..)

  • The Crossroad, near Dockery Plantation...

  • I really enjoyed your playing! It's got some meat to it!

  • Great! I can't believe you can play like that and have never been to Louisiana!

  • Superb, can we have some more cajun

  • Superb, lets have more

  • From one fiddler to another ... love your enthusiasm and your love for the music comes thru. Thanks!

  • Sounded good, thanks!

You ever think of cutting a CD for private distribution?

  • I left my heart in "Nawlens"......This makes me weap tears of joy!

  • Awesome. Just awesome!

  • He almost looks like Dr. House playing that fiddle! but damn he can play that thing!

  • Watched again - and this is still great ! Thanks for posting.

  • Did you ever get a chance to put together a few pieces to upload? I am starting to play a fiddle on Tuesday, and I would love to have a helping hand. I plan to learn on my own, so any little tip would be great! Loved to listen to you here, and cant wait to see more :) ~Lindsey~

  • Hi Lindsey - Yes, I did put some videos together, but according to one of the fiddle websites, my bowing technique is wrong for beginners, so I took them down again. Check back for more fiddle videos coming soon though. Chris

  • @peakfiddler ive been to several websites, as i will be purchasing and learning to play the fiddle. as i understand it, no bowing is wrong, some just prefer one method over the other, i assume it comes to personal preferance, but hey , keep on fiddlin great work!

  • There is ANOTHER country music virtuoso in the UK...in Thetford I think.....he's on YouTube.....davepedalsteel..........Dave Hartley. FANTASTIC on the pedal steel guitar...he's worth a listen for sure.

  • Lol when I watched this I broke out laughing. Awesome.

  • You play great. You make that fiddle play and sound very happy.

  • terrific!!

  • Very Awesome, Very traditional :) hope to be this good as i learn more.

  • Sounds great ...going to pass this channel on to my fiddling Friend.

  • right then expert

  • GREAT poor man's music, not the volin, but the fiddle.....

  • Right... because the amount of money one has is directly related to the amount of musical ability he's allowed to possess.

  • Excellent!

  • Wow my feet wont stop tappin...

    Great playing

  • Sir,

I'm Cajun and a fiddler as well. No need to apologize for anything, you sound absolutely fantastic. Thanks for posting this and please post more!

  • Excellent! thank you so much for this tune it's simply fabulous.

    Olivier from south of france.

  • Nice job on the "coon ass" fiddlin. Sound a whole lot better than many who play for a living. lol When ever I;m going to play cajun I always loosen my bow just a tad bit more to get that real sound. Thanks for posting.

  • Don't know why you feel you need to offer apologies to "real" cajun fiddlers - like the guys already said, you'd hold your own anywhere!!! super playing, makes me want to pick pu my fiddle!!!!! Keep it up!!!

  • I have so enjoyed playing along with your video. You look like you're having so much fun whilst making the video. It's easy to tell you enjoy the music. I lived in Louisiana a while and got to enjoy some of the music live and got hooked on it. Now I'm back in NC carrying a bit with me. Hope you post more lessons on your main site. I've found them helpful as well since I'm fairly new to fiddling. Cheers!

  • Bravo!!!!!!!! Totally awesome.

  • I lke the fiddle playing very much.. it is in my family and in my blood... but if u want people to learn how to play try not moving so much so we can get alook at your hand and fingers... if we cant see the fingers then it make it a little more challanging just to play by ear.

  • Outstanding, if you came to East Texas or Louisiana you'd have no problem finding folks to play with.

  • WOW this is a great Video your very good i am learing to play myself i am working on two songs now one is very bad and the other is even worse maybe some day i will good enough to post something

  • Thank you very kindly for all of your encouraging comments. I really would enjoy visiting Lousiana and it would be great to meet some local musicians. I am a fan of Cajun, Zydeco, Blues and Trad Jazz music, so there would be so much to listen to.

Blues and Jazz music in the UK is fantastic and it enjoys a big following. Zydeco and Cajun are less well known genres. So I always play a Cajun or Zydeco tune at every gig to make people more aware.

  • Almost every night , I Listen to you while I'm having dinner. It's like being at a real cajun restaurant. Thanks so much. I bet you can come here to Lousiana and get a job instantly playing the fiddle.

  • I'm a Cajun, and a multi-instrumentalist like yourself. You'd be welcome at any fais-do-do (Cajun Dance) and what we couldn't pay you in dollars (or in your case pounds or Euros), we'd make up for in boudin and crawfish. I've never seen a Brit who could play cajun fiddle like you do. Laissez les bon temps roullez! (Let the good times roll!) Keep up the great work!

  • As Capt. Piccard in Star Trek would say, "Well Done!" While I play mainly bluegrass, Cajun music has the power to make you want to get up and dance (I wish I could say that bluegrass has the same quality, but it doesn't.) If you showed up at a Cajun jam session, you wouldn't have any trouble finding folks to play with. Keep up the good work!

  • You are Fantastic, Please see on you tube - TWANGSTERS UNION and make your comments, This party was here in Leesville , La. We threw this party on Sept 11, 2009

  • Nosir, it aint perfect Cajun Fiddlin, but you sure would get a bunch a big grins and plenty of dancing going round if you popped up somewhere in LA playin like that!!!!

  • That was awesome!

  • YEEHAW, ya just went and got yourself another subscriber.

  • Thats about as real as it gets, now come on tell us

the truth, you is from east Texas ain't ya.. very Good Fiddle play'n ..

  • good from a ole moutain boy good stufffffff

  • Looks like one of dem dam coonasses snuck out of Louisiana and ended up in da UK. Come home ya hear now.

  • Actually Coonass is not a racist slur. If you do a Wikipedia search it really doesn't have anything to do with African American People and more a nick name used all the time by Cajun folks in La and Tx. I'm not racist, just incase someone else takes offence to that.

  • Oh BTW I just love this song. Little like Cajun fiddle by Don Rich. Really good song really well played. Cajuns would love to hear you.

  • additional to the previous post.

This is a good thing and thanks again for making this clip available.

  • As soon as you started playing this I got a big, stupid grin on my face.

    Thanks

  • Love it!!

  • Niiiiiiiccccceeee !!!!

  • I printed your song and I'm gona try to learn and play it.

  • I love listening to this! You're awesome!

  • Hey man, not too bad for someone that aint from here.

Too many extended bows, gotta chop it up some more..almost every note in cajun fiddle is a separate bowing.

But at any rate, still..pretty damned good!

    WHO DAT!

  • Come to Texas- you'll surely get some rowdy cheers. Great job!

  • tempo is a little slow and you could swing it a little more, play more choppier i guess, but that sounds pretty damn good. I live in lafayette louisiana

  • wow .. very nice. i have lived in south louisiana my entire life. you should google 'festivals acadianne" and think about coming over for a visit. you will fit right in.

  • I am not Cajun, but I am from East Texas. And you sir, sure play good enough to pass as Cajun. Keep it up! As you know, Always Eat Crawfish before playing!

  • Very Good, Man!

  • nice melody

  • loved your playing, sharp but not to pointed sweet but not to mellow.. nice.

  • Excelente ! donde podria conseguir partituras de esa musica ??'

  • thank you for replying to my message you do sound great thou so i think you should do more and then get people who want to play like you set up a peak fiddler club hehe good idea :)

    Erin@woodhouse

  • nice playing. can you give me some trick how to sound like fiddling? My playing sounds so classical:S

  • Hey, great fiddle music. Cajun fiddle got quite a distinct sound from norwegian fiddle. Fiddle and the special Hardingfiddle is different from this, but I love the sound scope :-)

  • that sound's great :)

  • Yo! Mr. P well dun ur well guud keep at it and teach all us fiiddlers. Ill pratice,

    Emma G

  • Emma, soon you will be playing just as good. Keep practicing the things I show in the lessons and see how good you become.

  • hey i didnt knw you done lessons? are they on youtube or a specific site??

    thanks

  • Yes, I'm trying to put together some simple lessons, so check back in a few weeks

  • heyy mr.perry gurrd on ya ya sound great keep going at it matyee

    erin weston@woodhouse

  • Thanks for the support Erin :)

  • BRAVO!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • yous is grand me bye dont stop playin fer nothing wow !!

  • Wow, it's great seeing someone obviously having fun with their instrument and moving around with it. So many people go about it like prayer and brain surgery, they forget that you can have FUN with music.

  • Great playing, worthy of an international star.

  • AWESOME! You shouldn't apologize for anything. I thought you were extremely good on the fiddle!

  • where could i possibly get these tunes? sheet music wise?

  • There is a rather pricey hardcover book called: Ye Yaille Chere, Traditional Cajun Dance Music - Raymond E. Francois

Do a Google search, runs between $27-30. It's got about 400 songs.

  • I play viola and was wondering if to play fiddle tunes i would need a violin

  • no you dont...just improvise, that's all fiddling is, improvisation!!!

  • you can transpose anything, but to be honest...the answer SHOULD be yes..sound isn't the same. ;)

  • Hey,

What's the name of the first tune? It's brilliant.

  • umm you might want to clean the rosin off of your fingerboard it's pure whire but that is a good cajun fiddle tune
