Hawking is too positive. Which is good for him because otherwise he wouldn't be alive now. The Human species won't survive for long in space without a suitable planet. And we have only found one likely system that could perhaps support us, but is so far away that Humans won't make it there in a lifetime. Which means that we must make ships that can support generations. And such ships are far in the future, so if we are unlucky we might all be dead before that.

Some of us will want to go to space, some of us will fight it. It happens with everything new, there's always a resistance.
