having those as a source for solar power after some time of development would be so beneficial concerning the energy crisis we are facing... besides, it is far more practical than fossil fuels which also does more negative effects to our planet...
Don't fly. This is a small prototype, showing that off-the-shelf solar can move an airship quite easily. This is running on 25 watts only, with 6% efficient panels (three years ago). The idea is to go larger with better panels and get greater speeds.
Thanks for clearing that up. I am also about to undertake a project to build an airship powered by solar panels. Do you have any advice? How did you ascend/descend?
Amazing. My biggest worry about airships is 1: They must be shocking to fly in a strong wind, & 2; The gas would be expensive woudnt it? Also how do you asend & decend this model so well, I thought you had to pump the gas in & out thus loosing some all the time.
Increasing speed will deal with winds. We now do about 40 with batteries, and could match that with higher end solar. Helium is expensive, a fossil fuel tied to petroleum fields. Hydrogen could be used with proper precautions and more development. Small ships use little gas, however.
@danielgosson You don't actually dump any gaz ouside an emergency situation. Actually airships are slightly heavyer than air. They use propellers to lift, and simply turn them off to descend.
Place a small cam on this you have a arieal survillance for troops they can survey forward and around on sunny days. Seems like it is filled with lighter than air gas? I like it bc it is so quiet police could use it to check out whats up at events like Jazzfest.
Pretty much - what's the first thing a terrorist is going to do when he sees an expensive american military camera tied to a condom full of explosive gas?
Remember that most of his day is occupied with shooting an AK-47 up in the air - it wouldn't take that much effort for him to entertain himself.
Helium is inert will not combust most comon use to insure there are no leaks since the gas is so compact it will escape through the smallest of seams. They use helium detectors and find any cracks. Use to haul the stuff in bulk. As for the use on the battle ground I would not be too concerned with the mild cost of these A they will drift slowly to the ground B the enemy gave his location when he fired on this thing C now send in the ground bots. This tech is so cheap compared to an injured man.
This is a uav just smaller quieter and less expensive. They already have small RC planes that they fly with a laptop. I can see the value of a quiet lighter than air RC craft use 3 and you can triangulate the exact location of shots fired to respond exactly where it is needed.

Yes, but it is a historical fact that Americans are the most progressive people, and are quick (usually) to implement innovations. Reason America is called the "Land of Opportunity", and people climb over each other to get here by the millions, every year. Now we have the first American President with an African name. Great invention. However, whats humorous about this is the bit about "our country" etc. It's funny how Americans think they have the only country in the world and cannot think outside their own borders. In fact America is only a SMALL part of the world! Other countries make great inventions too (usually). Did you know the Internet is international?

Hello. I am a designer and have built a few blimps as well. Yours is the coolest I've seen. Lately I'm prototyping inflatable but non-flying products but can't find the clear balloon material. Any suggestions? 206.992.1824
At a cost of $1,000 this is a very expensive toy. It is good fun, and also could demonstrate scientific principles to science classes tough. Clearly, it's not very economical, but then a lot of other toys aren't either. I wish this was a mass produced toy, because then the price would be about 1/4th or less.
There is no way to perminantly contain Helium. Latex balloons will last mere hours, and the Mylar "birthday balloons" will last a week or two before sinking provided there are no accidents. there are some chemical treatments that do help, lenghthening the latex balloon's seal by perhaps a week, but eventually, you'll have to spend all that money again.. (Note: Home-Helium containers can be had at wal-mart and party stores, roughly $30 for 30 balloons worth in medium pink propane canisters.)
I hope the US army is watching this - imagine having a fleet of 100s or even 1000s of these, when you are trying to protect your troops, anticipating the moves of your enemy or looking for certain people.
The transparant look is great feature as well - very hard to detect with the naked eye if it's circling 3000 ft above you.
So how much extra weight will one of this size allow ?
Oh for crying out loud, does America have to apply everything on the planet to the military? These are grown men who like to play dress-up, wear thunderbolts on their hats and spend most of their time with other men. If it weren't for the fact that they slaughter innocent people for sport, they'd be an even bigger joke than they are. Most people outgrow that shit by the time they're six or seven. War is for losers.
Very nice work, danielgeery. A significant amount of the inefficiency in a PV cells turns into heat. Those of us who play with larger panels have experienced this "heat island" effect. I wonder how much of that excess heat can be use to increase the lift of your helium? Keep up the good work.
yeah, you can kind of charge them up with solar energy during the day, and then during the night it still stays in the air, like nasa is doing with the Helios Solar Powered Aircraft...... that way your solar airship is a lot more viable ;).
Airships could learn something from seagoing vessels which steer from the stern (obviously) AROUND the bow, the latter needing to be 'sharp' so as to counteract the rudders. Blunt nosed ships such as shovel nosed barges etc. steer horribly.
'prokkets' - you are not free. you have imprisoned yourself by hatred and ignorance. For you are blind to the things of God. You are the same as the terrorist, lacking in wisdom and understanding. May the love of the Lord find you.
Wow this is antisemite terrorist propaganda. We need 2fight the iranins in iran so we dont have 2fight them here.Ulibs need 2b detained untl ucan prove u r not a terorist. If any iraqi tries 2take myFREEDOM I will blowup his cave cmd centr.IranNchina hve been stckpling WMDs2 use aginst us an our Israeli friends in th form of a mushroom cloud in th global wr n terror. When the market crash+bio/nuke battle comes we need world govt.+world bank+hive mind+every1 get microchip so prs bush cn keep us safe
The first photovoltaic cell was invented in 1883,how much time do you need..tell the truth.. solar can help but it is not very efficient and is unreliable without a backup system.Clouds,Rain,Snow, night all keep a solar system from working properly and the cost of a system to supply power for the average family home is $25,000 or more.
High altitude platforms are right around the corner. Highly efficient solar cells, ditto. Energy storage likewise. Microwave beaming is already here with rectenas. My family and I lived off grid for fifteen years on solar, in Idaho.
Thats fine daniel but how did you live of the grid other than solar? Why do you leave out the details. You were either cold all the time in winter and didnt cook at home or you had propane tanks, wood burning stove, fireplace etc. You didnt live in Idaho in the winter just on solar.
Very true; it's a small box here! We did burn wood and use a small generator in the long dark days of Jan. and Feb. It was a seriously earth sheltered house. With materials soon to be available and what I learned 10 to 25 years ago, one could come close or live completely energy independently.
sun always shines above the clouds ..lol..yeah it does.. so whats your plan to build a giant air ship that doesnt expand in the low pressures of the upper atmosphere... the thing would pop.
Excellent point! You have discovered a problem that simply can't be solved using today's technology. He should put the thing away, and hope that some day in the future, by some miracle, a pressure-relief valve will be invented. It could work for hot water heaters, too, and someday in the distant future people will have hot water whenever they want! I know it's just a dream. It's always good to have the "but what about..." crowd to keep the inventors' feet on the ground.
Eco-Transport will have to be heavily marketed to make this a success. You appear to be making a lot of the right decisions. Keep following that beating drum inside your chest.
Tesla was a great scientist, but not a business man.
Thank you for taking a dream into reality. Go BIG or go home, as the hour is near.
Reflectivity of 95% + could be maintained from a thin film vacuum deposited reflected coating on the lower hemisphere of the ballons contour. Little oxidation would occur on the film to reduce reflectivity due to the presence of pure inert He. This would be a very effecient solar collector and the film would add negligible mass to the vehicle.
Just keeps taking my breath away every time I watch this video. How about a reflective coating on the inside of an aspherically designed ballon with a thin row of high capacity solar cells at the focus (facing away from the sun). The if the ballon could orientate itself at all times (rotationally) to optimise light gathering then this would be low mass. Has anyone seen the sun cube or sun ball ...google it ...less cells...more power...less weight...smaller ballon!
To qualify my last remark. There are probably other countries that are more fertile politically and environmentally where these technologies can be optimized and upscaled correctly. You have done so well and have been building these things for years and years but there are so many parameters that could be optimized here.
Probably a good idea to avoid developing these sort of things in countries run by Texan oil men but then again, you have got it this far...Keep going!
Not to worry... I'm avidly pursuing this, working with people in Germany, Australia, Shanghai, around the U.S., Hong Kong; was in Prague not long ago doing a demo; in Costa Rica last month, flying over Turrialba (videos got stolen, but I may go back soon). My goal is merely to show that the Wright Bros. made a wrong turn... Peace, Dan
Accept advice and backing from likeminded people...work with them and really make something of your terrific ideas.
Forget about "what the US could have done" ...as the US is FAR from being a county in any sort of position to develop this technology further. (As Beamshipcaptain rightly points out)
Accept help....and make the most of the good vibes and offers you are getting from You Tube worldwide.
OUr country could have done this, but any time any one tries, they are threatened by hired thugs in late-model Lincoln-twon-cars, bu me with Walther PP Ks and glGlocks, and admonished to stop all "high-efficiency energy research". The oil companies get away with threatening people with murder (and a few actual murders). Bush knows about this. Such evil. But we have the power of the vote. And "we won't get fooled again, no no!".
Dan, How many solar cells did you use and what current/voltage does your solar version run on. It seems to move very very well. Up to what wind speed can you use it? This one is 22ft long isn't it?
This 22 footer (I think) used about 28 watts, ~2.1 amps at 12 volts. Speed is surprisingly difficult to measure but my best estimate on this one would be around 20 mph.
I think there's actually a type of material (saw it in Edmund's scientifics) that heats up in the sun and rises of its own accord, no helium needed. However, I don't suppose it would hold an engine quite as reliably.

If it weren't for the fact that they slaughter innocent people for sport, they'd be an even bigger joke than they are. Most people outgrow that shit by the time they're six or seven. War is for losers.

Did anyone say air-dildo yet? cause man air-dildo
Llepsdog 3 years ago 2
Very nice work, danielgeery. A significant amount of the inefficiency in a PV cells turns into heat. Those of us who play with larger panels have experienced this "heat island" effect. I wonder how much of that excess heat can be use to increase the lift of your helium? Keep up the good work.

Some people do like flying in the day. For the ones who want to fly at night, we will have fuel cells, that are powered from solar in the day.
danielgeery 4 years ago
If you thought it needed a pilot, you could also fly it from your computer. We are getting very close...
Thank you for articulating the vision I've had for about a decade so well.

some days ago scientists invented something called batteries..... maybe you have heard of them.
DXR13KE 4 years ago
You mean those things that run out of power and then you charge them up again? I had some when I was a youngster. They were fun to play with.
danielgeery 4 years ago
yeah, you can kind of charge them up with solar energy during the day, and then during the night it still stays in the air, like nasa is doing with the Helios Solar Powered Aircraft...... that way your solar airship is a lot more viable ;).
DXR13KE 4 years ago
No one says you can't combine the two -
but it's important to reduce weight as much as possible, so it can be used for other purposes.
ElvenDane 3 years ago
by taking the capacity of flying at night you reduce its range and utility.
DXR13KE 3 years ago
Yes, so you charge the batteries via the sun during the daytime - very simple.
ElvenDane 3 years ago
shame this is not being done today..... i mean on a bigger scale.

Airships could learn something from seagoing vessels which steer from the stern (obviously) AROUND the bow, the latter needing to be 'sharp' so as to counteract the rudders. Blunt nosed ships such as shovel nosed barges etc. steer horribly.

The first photovoltaic cell was invented in 1883,how much time do you need..tell the truth.. solar can help but it is not very efficient and is unreliable without a backup system.Clouds,Rain,Snow, night all keep a solar system from working properly and the cost of a system to supply power for the average family home is $25,000 or more.
quaheedus 4 years ago 2
High altitude platforms are right around the corner. Highly efficient solar cells, ditto. Energy storage likewise. Microwave beaming is already here with rectenas. My family and I lived off grid for fifteen years on solar, in Idaho.
danielgeery 4 years ago
Thats fine daniel but how did you live of the grid other than solar? Why do you leave out the details. You were either cold all the time in winter and didnt cook at home or you had propane tanks, wood burning stove, fireplace etc. You didnt live in Idaho in the winter just on solar.
quaheedus 4 years ago
Very true; it's a small box here! We did burn wood and use a small generator in the long dark days of Jan. and Feb. It was a seriously earth sheltered house. With materials soon to be available and what I learned 10 to 25 years ago, one could come close or live completely energy independently.
danielgeery 4 years ago
sun always shines above the clouds ..lol..yeah it does.. so whats your plan to build a giant air ship that doesnt expand in the low pressures of the upper atmosphere... the thing would pop.
quaheedus 4 years ago
Excellent point! You have discovered a problem that simply can't be solved using today's technology. He should put the thing away, and hope that some day in the future, by some miracle, a pressure-relief valve will be invented. It could work for hot water heaters, too, and someday in the distant future people will have hot water whenever they want! I know it's just a dream. It's always good to have the "but what about..." crowd to keep the inventors' feet on the ground.

Have you looked into B.E.A.M. robotics? You could make this autonomous, and have some sort of tracking system to see where it goes.

Reflectivity of 95% + could be maintained from a thin film vacuum deposited reflected coating on the lower hemisphere of the ballons contour. Little oxidation would occur on the film to reduce reflectivity due to the presence of pure inert He. This would be a very effecient solar collector and the film would add negligible mass to the vehicle.
boatman43 4 years ago
Just keeps taking my breath away every time I watch this video. How about a reflective coating on the inside of an aspherically designed ballon with a thin row of high capacity solar cells at the focus (facing away from the sun). The if the ballon could orientate itself at all times (rotationally) to optimise light gathering then this would be low mass. Has anyone seen the sun cube or sun ball ...google it ...less cells...more power...less weight...smaller ballon!
boatman43 4 years ago
To qualify my last remark. There are probably other countries that are more fertile politically and environmentally where these technologies can be optimized and upscaled correctly. You have done so well and have been building these things for years and years but there are so many parameters that could be optimized here.
Probably a good idea to avoid developing these sort of things in countries run by Texan oil men but then again, you have got it this far...Keep going!
boatman43 4 years ago
Not to worry... I'm avidly pursuing this, working with people in Germany, Australia, Shanghai, around the U.S., Hong Kong; was in Prague not long ago doing a demo; in Costa Rica last month, flying over Turrialba (videos got stolen, but I may go back soon). My goal is merely to show that the Wright Bros. made a wrong turn... Peace, Dan
danielgeery 4 years ago
Dan,
Accept advice and backing from likeminded people...work with them and really make something of your terrific ideas.
Forget about "what the US could have done" ...as the US is FAR from being a county in any sort of position to develop this technology further. (As Beamshipcaptain rightly points out)
Accept help....and make the most of the good vibes and offers you are getting from You Tube worldwide.
Go Dan go !
boatman43 4 years ago
OUr country could have done this, but any time any one tries, they are threatened by hired thugs in late-model Lincoln-twon-cars, bu me with Walther PP Ks and glGlocks, and admonished to stop all "high-efficiency energy research". The oil companies get away with threatening people with murder (and a few actual murders). Bush knows about this. Such evil. But we have the power of the vote. And "we won't get fooled again, no no!".

Dan, How many solar cells did you use and what current/voltage does your solar version run on. It seems to move very very well. Up to what wind speed can you use it? This one is 22ft long isn't it?
boatman43 4 years ago
This 22 footer (I think) used about 28 watts, ~2.1 amps at 12 volts. Speed is surprisingly difficult to measure but my best estimate on this one would be around 20 mph.
danielgeery 4 years ago
Great vid! I want one for next Christmas! :-)
latte123 4 years ago
Interesting. So, I take it the solar panels are used primarily to heat up the air, not to supply electricity. Or maybe...
Is the engine powered by battery, or is it small enough for the solar cells to work?
b59125 4 years ago
The solar cells power the battery; helium makes the ship the same density as air. This paticular configuration runs on around 24 watts.
danielgeery 4 years ago
I think there's actually a type of material (saw it in Edmund's scientifics) that heats up in the sun and rises of its own accord, no helium needed. However, I don't suppose it would hold an engine quite as reliably.
