I disagree, Boss's are a timeless means of testing your real skill at the game you've been playing. A test as to whether you've really gained the skill of the game.

You spend the entire game normally doing challenges, fighting or what-not, so why is a boss any different? It's just an epic epiphany of the game.

I have to agree with him on most bosses but A. challenge is important and some of the best games are characterised by their epic boss battles - Final Fantasy series, Batman:Arkham Asylum, Prince of Persia are just a few games which have boss fights which are a lot of fun and not a chore. Games are improving nowadays and bosees are becoming a fun chalenge rather than just jumping over wave attacks and repeating attack patterns.

As someone who picks games for being well written with intresting plots this can really piss me off. I play on easy so I can see what happens next. Don't get me started on not being able to find out the ending just because I suck. Can you imagine an Agatha Christie novel with that idea. "Well Pirot who is the murderer?" Charlie is absolutely right, most boss fights are incredibly TEDIOUS. Shooting/hitting/fumbling at/with the same thing for ages is the very opposite of entertainment, and developers should STOP BEING SO BLOODY LAZY.

It all depends on how it's done. But some bosses make the games more enjoyable.

Sometimes they work, the Metroid Prime series for instance because you don't have to spend hours working out the weak point.

If done right a boss can work as a good way of raising the difficulty for a finale and adding diversity to monotonous enemies.

That is incredibly rare though and ussually it is a chore because it often forces an entirely new style of play where you're not having fun and it's a war of attrition... until the game says "fuck you" cheats and kills you instantly somehow
