  • Any one know why Arch left??

  • I was there for this! This was a life changing concert for me for a kidof age17.I have been playing drums now for 29yrs because of Steve Zimmerman.Mike Portnoy was there with my cousin from Mystery Play. Mike was an amazing drummer even then.Mikes band was called Majesty. His singer was Chris Collins at the time.Amazing how much time has went by.Truly a magical night at Sundance.I got to play this stage in years to come in a band called Wicked Sin.(myspace) I drum for Sensory Defect now(facebook)

  • JOHN ARCH WITH MORE HAIR!! ARCH/MATHEOS (2011) ALBUM IS NOW CONSIDERED BEST ALBUM OF THE YEAR!!! Metallica,Iron Maiden and all those other bands are trying hard to keep their noses above water, since their a dying breed. Then John Arch and Jim Matheos come along and finally puts all those old bands behind eating the dust with the ARCH/MATHEOS album...lol!!Lars Ulrich sucks at drums, can't even keep up with a simple guitar riff, trys to be progressive and throws the tempo and everyone else off..lol

  • He sings it better than the album version!

  • It's amazing how many people remember John Arch, he's got quite the cult following.

  • @Methrt3, I would hope that many people would. While I was still in diapers when he was in Fates Warning (most of his reign anyway), I found them after and other than possibly the mighty Iron Maiden, they had to be the greatest thing going in the early-mid 80s. And I liked them after that too. Then more recently, we got the twist of fate ep and now Arch Matheos, which are both epic.

  • what happen to John Arch?, who's a great singer powerful pinch coming out vocal

  • @eugvh18 John Arch and Jim Matheos (along with the rest of Fates Warning minus Ray Alder) are going to release a new album very soon. :D

  • @charlesandhisworld oh great thanks for information, i'am looking forward to it

    excited yes indeed

  • @charlesandhisworld, it's out now, and it's awesome

  • omg!!!!!! could cry .... great............

  • still very cool to see old FW footage...LOL brings back lots of memories....yes I'm that old too...LOL

  • Arch/ Matheos look it up

amazing news!!!! they pretty much finished recorded an album. just gotta wait for finishing touches.

ps. i kid you not. google is your friend

  • @RoccoMATION, the Arch/Matheos album is out and it kicks ass!

  • John Maurice Archambault!

  • Sundance ftw :-p

  • If I believe in God, I would pray everyday for better quality of this recording ...

  • Omg you really have to hear well and not be overreactive to highpitches to apreciat this recording, bah.....

  • Is that Vic Arduinni on guitar??

  • Two vocalists left the scene much before their time ... John Arch of FW and Michael Kiske of Helloween. Neither band has been the same ... and neither band could recapture the magic.

  • Bad sound quality or not, John Arch sends fucking chills down my spine. This is ridiculously good.

  • Fuckin Sundance baby. What a hole that place was. This video is awesome though. FW rules.

  • Does anyone know if this video is the same quality as the one that comes with the deluxe version of Awaken the Guardian? I've been thinking of buying it for the video but not sure if I wanna spend the money for such low quality.

  • @TheFirthof5th This is the same as the bonus tracks on the deluxe version of Awaken the Guardian. Back in the day you could only come across this audio through cassette trading. (yes, i'm that old) Unfortunately the quaity is terrible, but it has the immortal voice of John Arch. For those who never had th opportunity to be blessed by his voice in person, this is all that is available.

  • Just have to wonder how far they could have gone with Arch....he is incredible!

  • Wow, just looked back at my old comment. I sounded like a Mexican immigrant.

Anyway, yes the quality is that bad.

  • i remember this. i was standing next to mike portnoy the whole time. who knew what he would become

  • @fireguye4 that is a great story to have under your belt,,,awesome

  • legend

  • I like how the audience has no idea what's going on...Guardian is difficult to head-bang to.

  • I don't think this sounds THAT bad.

I've heard better recordings, but I've also heard worse....much worse

  • This unlistenable.

  • Few realize the impact John Arch and Awaken the Guardian had on the Scandinavian Black/Death Metal scene. The entire genre spawned from Awaken the Guardian ... from Dark Tranquillity, to In Flames, to Kalmah, etc, etc.

  • Horrible sound, but this song is pretty much in my top 5 of favorite songs I've ever heard anywhere by any band anytime in my entire life. Yes, it's THAT good!

  • This album was the second best metal album ever behind night on broken which I still have with all the scratches, skips and all. :D

  • Now playing in SublimeMusicTV youtube channel

  • I was at this show!

  • Who's bitchin' about Tull? Listen..Tull is one of the greatest bands to ever walk the earth...if you can't appreciate that then just give it up!!!

  • Although ''No Exit'' has still some kind of thrashy/power metal kind of sound and Ray Alder on vocals, it was still pretty good. To me, the band basically died after that album. What a shame.

  • John Arch is the BEST EVER.

  • Absolutely! After John Arch, their music became verrry boring & predictable. So sad...

  • @nathantim YES He was!

  • umm, dudes....i love early Fates with John Arch more than anyone....but Queensryche's first album came out in 1981...way before Fates came out....i love early QR and early Fates more than anything.

  • Jethro Tull Prog metal? I guess you voted for them for the 89' Grammy's instead of Metallica? Yes and Rush are prog, Jethro Tull...not so much.

Fates were doing prog METAL way before Queensryche.

  • to end this debate, both bands formed in the early 80s, QR in 81 and FW in 83, both started off as kind of low rent Maiden clones until they established their own sound. For QR it wasn't really about being progressive per say, it was more songs, whereas after Awakening the Guardian and losing Arch, FW went further into prog territory while QR went more mainstream

  • Are you really saying Jethro Tull isn't prog? Wake up man. I agree it isn't prog "metal", but neither Rush nor Yes were. They were prog "rock". Jethro Tull is one of the most incredible prog bands ever. Prog has nothing to do with people singing high, and odd timings: that is just prog metal. Prog is about meaningful lyrics, experimentation, use of uncommon instruments, and innovation in general (so even odd timings are fine, but not a requisite).

  • btw... Fates Warning are amazing, and Arch is a true "monster". They lost a lot of their magic in the years, but still remain a good band, even with Alder on vocals (less metal and more melodic, but good nonetheless).

  • I love QR and Fates, but Fates was doing this before QR was.

  • ah gotta love the 80's

  • no doubt, what an amazing band John Arch is amazing.

  • these guys are great, and pretty unknown these days

  • Too bad the sound isn't better because I missed out on this era of the band; and the crappy part is I was playing music at the time and would have LOVED to have heard this material back then. ;( It was those bad record covers that kept me from buying their records.

  • the band I played with in the 80s was supposed to open for them on this tour but they canceled 4 days before due to poor ticket sales

  • Awaken the guardian, what an album..thanks for this.

  • Fates Warning invented prog metal. Look at all the thanks they get on early Dream Theater album credits. I hope that someday they get their due.

  • no im sorry. Queensrych was closer to inventing it than them. Listen to their album, "The Warning". and jethro tull invented prog. FYI

  • hhmmm... prolly a stupid comment by me... jethro tull was kind of a diffrent kind of prog...

  • jethro tull did NOT invent anything other than dudes with fairy boots playing a flute, progressive rock was coined for and created upon the release of "In The Court Of The Crimson King", therefore if anyone was to take the term prog and attribute it "inventing" it as you say, it would be King Crimson in 1969

  • haha. I stand corrected

  • Progressive started at least in 1967. One of the first bands recognized for giving it birth is Procol Harum, with a Whiter Shade of Pale (title curiousingly similar to A Pleasant Shade of Grey by Fates Warning, isn' it?)

  • One of the best underrated bands of all time playing one of their best songs live. This video is ftw.

  • Check out Vic the original Guitar player for Fates playing bass with Ct band Sinis Gally in the 80s.

    Just type sinisgally

Its at the allycat in CT in 1988

  • Fates warning are the best.

  • John Arch > [insert vocalist here]

  • Damn this rules!!! If only they'd stuck with this style in stead of ditching the power metal influences as they did on their later albums.

  • AMAZING!!!!!

  • I was at this show...great show,miss those days.

  • One of the best underrated 80's Metal songs. Part ballad, part Prog-part Metal. All together Awesome.

  • this is LEGEND !!!!!!!!!!

  • this was sundance on long island. played there myself in early 90's. also worked security sometimes.. yeah they re-opened in oct in rocky point.

  • I havent heard this stuff in year..great post,thanks!!

  • I happen to be lucky at a show in CT.. I believe it was the inside out tour where John Arch came on stage and sang Guardian along with Ray.. It was totally amazing!! John sounded great!!!

  • You aint kidding man, that actually to this day was the best thing I ever heard, and I hear theres a audio copy that one of the road crew has

  • I missed this freakin' show to take the damned SAT back in 86. I never realized this was the last opportunity to see this great line-up. FW was never the same once John left.

  • The first 3 albums are the best of Fates Warning. After then they turned annoying

  • awesome

  • fuckin amazing song!

  • John Arch rocked, awesome voice.

  • I heard Sundance is reopening in Rocky Point this fall.

  • 22 years ago!!!! Shit i'm getting old. But i still love metal!!!!

  • buy that double disk set with old demos, live songs, and the other cd is a dvd with this whole show....its totally worth it.

  • I was actually at this show at sundance, and hung out next to mike portnoy and had no clue. what a great show this was

  • I sure do remember this show

  • At the end John says to the audience: "this one here is called PRELUDE TO RUIN..."

Someone upload the entire show PLEASE....

  • That's Jon Arch? He's incredible. there was somethin' special about that band when he was in it.

    Prelude to ruin rules!!!!

  • awesome

  • Terrible sound quality but who cares.......

It's Fates Warning with John Arch LIVE!!!

I wish the entire gig was uploaded...

  • Do you know whats a damn shame?theres not one website with any info on Sundance..No tribute page, nothing. I used to live there, lolWell,at leaast in the parking lot... I wish someone would set up a sundance tribute page and post loads of videos and pics

  • sundance was awesome. was in many a mosh pit there. ( grew up in seaford )

  • broke many a bone there. best show. slayer, exodus and celtic frost

  • Sundance is reopening this fall in Rocky Point.Frank Cariola has a Sundance myspace page.Scan your old ticket stubs,Flyers,Setlists or print ads and send them to him for display.!!!Rock on.

  • Holy Shit, I think I was there

  • Holy Shit, I think you were!, and Man were you WASTED! LOL

Old Fates Warning with John Arch RULES!

"Awaken the Guardian" and "The Spectre Within" are 2 GREAT Albums!

  • tell ya what, If I were there & I think I was, I'll bet the farm I was wasted

  • I just got this double cd set - plus it came with a dvd of this concert. VERY COOL!!! I absolutely love awaken the guardian! I still have the cassette tape of it( a little worn out but still have it). My ipod is filled with this music, I LOVE IT!!!

  • i was there>>>>>> sundance in bayshore. Mike portnoy is in the audience

  • i need this footage

  • Great Song from the Best Fates Warning Era!I'm still a huge fan of their first 3 albums!Arch Rules!!!

  • I was a huge fan of this album. Actually, I had the cassette. I was a big Maiden fan and became a huge Fates Warning fan because of Arch. Then with No Exit, I was a little disappointed because Arch is sooo much better. Lots of memories with listening to Night on Brocken and Awaken the Guardian. I own the CD's now. Had to upgrade to the new technology to keep it in my library. I still listen to it today on my Ipod. Something to be said about Mr. Arch and his amazing voice.

  • maiden is the best dude

  • Awaken the Guardian is one of the best recordings of all time...

  • Amen to that!!!!!!!!!!

  • Jon Arch and the Guardian album are both incredible, my favorites, but the albums production sucks and just about all live versions you see are with ghetto sound like this (still glad you posted it tho). Sad!

  • Check out the 2 disc remastered edition of Awaken The Guardian - vastly improved sound quality, highly recommended!

  • I actually did pick that up, and the raw demo/live tracks on disc 2 are awesome. The live Fata Morgana is great and the cover of Die Young is fun.

  • JOHN ARCH

Fates Warning to me is the best

  • saw fates many times, only with ray alder, but was fortunate enough to see them in 94 in connecticut when john arch joined them for a couple of tunes..love their music, with both singers, and actually wish frank aresti were back with them.

  • Mr. fucking John Arch

    where are you?????? :'(

Love to all here who say he is the best

The only term I could possibly think of to describe Fates Warning with Arch is Regal Metal....without him? NO WAYYYYYY

Also I have a handwritten letter of Arch explaining why he left FW but part of the reason WAS becuz he had to work too much..if anyone wants to see it e-mail me on here...

Much Love to this line-up of Fates<4

  • I hope you know about his Solo album from a few years ago :) Its nice to see a fellow Arch fan with much enthusiasm :D please visit my friends at Progulus. c o m, Lots of Prog Rock/Metal to be found there. FW rules! -MAVIII

  • im related to jim, maybe,i just think it's cool because he's a really good guitarist.

  • Ouch... my ears are bleeding...! This sound really cuts through :)

  • This was the stuff... damn i miss these days.

  • The Guradian Album start to finish is absolutely incredible... I just (finally converted) from cassette versions of the album to a CD version... it was like 4.96 at Amazon... blown away... one of the absolute best albums of the 80's and least known. John Arch was soooo incredible. When he left, my interest left.

  • Allthow Ray is my favorite singer, John Arch voice is better for Fates music....

  • Very cool. he sound quality is not so good, but it's cool just to see that lineup with Arch, Aresti, ect...

  • John did leave the band But my cuz got the boot

  • great rare 80's footage of The Guardian

  • John Arch is God! He had some much heart. I saw them on this tour. Awesome! FW was never the same for me after he left.

  • Well...I love all Fates Warning's cds, but it's obvious that John Arch added something very special to the group....just like Mark Zonder did when he arrived...

  • Holy shit this guy can wail. I had no idea his live work was this great. Awaken is in my top fav albums of all time, Arch is a metal legend!!

  • Gret way to start off a discussion, "dumbass". Knowing how to spell the members names doens't make you the biggest fan, it just makes you look petty if thats what you fixate on.

  • Geoff Tate, Warren Dane, etc..are great high-pitched singers. Oh, and Messiah.

  • dumbass, it's Warrel, not warren rofl, and add James Labrie to the top list of vocalists

  • Don't sleep on Robert Lowe of Solitude Aeturnus either, but Arch was something else.

  • I used to think Bruce Dickinson was the best singer ever by far... then I discovered John Arch and Fates Warning. Don't get me wrong, Bruce, Rob, Ralf Scheepers... they are great, but none of them is as complete as John is, both in terms of composition and singing. What a pity FW forced him out, things with Alder were not the same. They still sounded good, but John gave them something especial.

  • "What a pity FW forced him out"

??? I thought John chose to leave the band so that he could become a carpenter and be closer to his family.

  • I wrote that FW forced him out because I read an interview where he explained what happened. Have a look for the full interview in fateswarning dot com slash arch (this site does not allow to put url sites so I have to write it like this)

This is an extract: "So I guess where that led me--I was given an ultimatum by the band. [...]"Well, I guess it's unanimous, the band feels that they're going to start lookin' for another singer," and I was blown off my rocker."

  • You are correct. I met him at a later Fates show, and he confirmed this

  • John Arch is a pretty cool guy. I had a chance to work with him in 1993 when he was out of music.

  • this is the show that comes with the "awaken the guardian" 3 disc set. this is the only video footage available of john arch & fates from this time period. they also do a killer version of black sabbath's "die young" from the same show.

  • Scholz's Rockman was Good.

    Too Bad sound was off.

This Band is one of the all time best.

  • Sholtzs rockman was crap...demolished the tonality and natural timber of the instrument..made it impossible to mic effectively..too much distortion and too much high mids..

  • LOL

  • The 'Twist of Fate' album John Arch did in 2003 is awesome. He's still got the voice.

  • Yeah, Alder was great, but nothing was ever as good as Arch on Traveller In Time and the rest of 'Spectre'. Where do we get this whole show!?!

  • John Arch is an amazing songwriter. I was pretty much done with FW after Arch left.

  • John Arch was an amazing vocalist, at least in the studio. Live he is not quite up to his studio ability, in my opinion (based upon videos). He remains my favorite vocalist based upon his work on "The Spectre Within" and "Awaken the Guardian" albums. I especially love "The Apparition" and "Giant's Lore," respectively.

  • He sounds pretty good to me on this low quality recording. Fates Warnings biggest mistake was getting rid of hiim.

  • Thanks for the video. Wish the camera wouldn't have focused so much on the acoustic guitar during the verses though, since they just seemed to be building an atmospheric rhythm.

  • John Arch is my favorite metal singer of all time. This video only reinforces that feeling. I love Alder too, but he and Arch are very different.

  • too much treble is an understatement..damn rockmans....worst piece of shit guitar processor ever built. The guitar tones were as thin as paper and shrill enough to cut through glass...impossible to mic effectivley..

  • oh my

  • lol i have this DVD as well they got too much dam treble in this but john arch is a legend
