THANK-YOU morrisonAV for saving and posting this great video. I was a HUGE Cars fan back then, and I still am today. This was a great performance and I liked that show "Fridays" better than SNL. You helped bring back a flood of memories of my college days. This was my favorite Cars song. I loved the way Elliot E. played the guitar, he really ripped into this song.
I really owe you for this great video and walk down memory lane during some of the best years of my life. Thank-you.
THIS is the video that turned me into a Cars nut when I first watched it here almost two years ago. I wanted to revisit some old songs that I loved and this was one of them. My world exploded that night. No kidding. Thank God for you, @morrisonav.
You've made my day, sparks! SO glad you found this clip and that it was so influential. I saved it for almost 30 years and was so happy to see how many people have found it here on YT. The one thing that really surprises me is when other YT members steal this clip and put THEIR name on it! Oh well, glad you enjoyed this.
Songs like this show that the Cars were first and foremost a Rock band and secondly a new wave band. So glad I was able to scrape together enough money to see them back in the day.
"Fridays" was not great a show when it came to comedy, even though it did give us Larry David and a few "Seinfeld" actors. But when it came to music, they were fantastic. They put on the New Wave and punk rock acts like "Saturday Night Live" wouldn't even touch. I figured if they just showed music acts and no comedy skits, that would've been fine.
As much as I love all the guys in the CARS, Ric and Elliot made this spectacular video what it is. Ric's vocals (Just what was needed for this song) and EE's solos are incomparable... That being said, I still think Ben, David and Greg were Excellent !!!!
I went to a Cars concert in 1979 and this song was rattling in my head until the next morning. Between Easton's guitar and Hawkes keyboards it was ringing my ears for hours after the concert.
This song is so cool and I'm sure Ric Ocasek didn't mean it to be cool. It is so unique sounding and ballsy...i don't think a song of this type is ever duplicated. On a footnote ....we just can't say enough about how incredible Elliot Easton is...what a hell of a guitar artist.
Amazing gem! Thanks so much! I can't stop replaying this!! I watched this exact live broadcast in Clearwater Fl. when it aired. I had to sneak down after the 'rents had gone to bed to watch Fridays or SNL, which were my favorite shows.
The Fridays sound people got this RIGHT!! Elliot Easton's Strat sounds amazing and The Cars slam down a classic performance!
Touch and Go's odd rhythm and spatial chords hooked me and it became one of my top Cars tunes. How can this have been 31 YEARS AGO?!!
Glad you enjoyed the clip so much. As you could tell, I lived in the area too (New Port Richey) and collected a lot of pre-MTV clips off of the late-night video clip shows.
@chanorsi - That's not actually a Strat, it's a Fender Lead II, a model that Fender briefly produced from around '79-‘82. And yes, it sounds great here! Elliot Easton, Steve Morse, Rory Gallagher and even Bono played Fender Lead Series guitars. I play one as well.
@bobernstHey Thanks for the clarification. I guess I didn't look closely enough. I saw the double cutaway and assumed it was a strat... Doh! I prefer a Tele, but I LOVE one of his Strats. It had a pictorial in guitar player mag in late 83 or early 84. I think it was a 59, but not sure now. I am sure of the color which is an amazing hue called Burgundy Purple Mist. in metallic. It was pristine with case and get this: It still had the original sale tag on the headstock! Cheers!
Awesome and inspiring. Now that the new albums out, I find myself rediscovering alot of their older material. Always loved the high keyboard note at the end!
Thanks for the great memory, super. I was still living at home then, both my parents were alive and well and all was well with the world. You're right....those WERE simpler times. You want to know what MY biggest memory of this performance was? The fact that Ocasek smiled after the song was over.......weird, huh? I was SO happy when I found this clip in my collection and it's been great to see it rediscovered here by everybody. Dave
@browsemusicvideos You hit it on the head my friend...yet as a song writer myself...it's still hard to write like Ric Ocasek...the tree-word is there for the picking, yet I'm still clueless....ugh!
Best performance of a Cars song I've ever seen. Truly flawless and almost dangerous considering at that time bands rarely played on tv without synching to a track. This particular song is one of the highlights of new wave. It has pop sensibility with real artful depth and interplay. Its polymetric rhythm makes it tricky to play. It stimulates and genuinely rewards you for listening. A bonus is how the unorthodox stage placement really shows the unique personality and setup of the band.
that's right elliot easton has always been one of my favorite guitarists. listen to all their albums and you'll find some great solos/guitar work for great songs from a great band. not to mention the combination of keyboards, two guitarists, bassist, drums and a singer. great composers.
@denormzone Yes to all of the above. The CARS had it all. Two "GREAT" lead vocalists, great Guitar work, Greg Hawkes on keyboard fantastic and David Robinson on Drums Awesome.. This song brings out everything that the CARS were. Great song, Great Band for the Ages. My favorite song ever here...
Touch And Go", a hit single by The Cars, has polymetric verses, with the drums and bass playing in 5/4, while the guitar, synthesizer, and vocals are in 4/4 (the choruses are entirely in 4/4) Very difficult to play and sync. The drum beat almost seems backwards.
They were so WAY ahead of there time.. So cool, and the clothes were so hip. I am glad that I was there when all of this happened, and I "got it" when they broke big in Boston on 'BCN.... Because now Ben is gone, and I really miss him.
Great video. I have listened to this group since the 70's and I still do even their new single "Free." Just an all round great group with great staying power. Too bad that Benjamin Orr is gone. Thank you for the upload.
This was always a kickass song because it had that early 80's mix of Led Zepplin and thier own signature melody to go with it. Elliot is just brilliant on this one!

My ALL TIME FAVORITE song from The Cars. Thanks for all the memories! From DiamondDave, class of 1980. By the way, I had a haircut just like Ric's, when i had hair...lol...rock on!
what an amazing performance as usual from the cars ! im so glad we can all watch and relive this. plus who doesnt love this 1980's set with the polka dot lighting? i fucking love it haha
It is great to see all the recent hits and comments about a Band that was a Pioneer in the late 70's to 80's and had such a profound impact on other Bands and all of their Fans... LOVE THE CARS and AWLWAYS WILL... Their Music, Unique and One-Of-A-KIND will always span the decades....
Witness the magic that is Elliot Easton. I'm drunk watching him. This clip is what made me appreciate this band all over again.
I love how Elliot's guitar creeps slowly into the song...bouncing and changing the rhythm and energy till that almost orgasmic solo performance of his and the follow up flourishes. Wow.
Elliot, you're stunning...lovely to watch and listen to.
I love this ! Seeing Ric ham it up at the beginning is great. Cant wait to see them (minus Ben of course) at lollapalooza in Aug. I havent seen them live since 1984 !
how do i find their appearance on jimmy fallon on here? i know there has to be one that isnt taken down. theres always a way to put it up without them taking it down. help me please.. darthcdrx@aol.com
Elliott Easton's solos were works of art, every note thought out, and carefully placed in just at the right spot. Cool stuff. Not just jamming, or making noise like so many other players would do.
@jimgtr0987654 .... This guy's memorable guitar solos (bye bye love, dangerous type, candy o, best friend's girl, and this song) provided background music to my formative years. Great memories are associated with his guitar sound and the Cars band in general...they were short, technically sound, and original.
When you think of original rock guitarists from the mid 70's through the mid 80's only a few come to mind: Eddie Van Halen, Alex Lifeson, Neil Schon, Gary Richrath, and Eliot Easton.
I remember watching this first time. "Fridays" wasn't that great a show. However, they were willing to put on the New Wave/punk rock acts like "Saturday Night Live" would never touch at the time. "Fridays" didn't last very long. In the long run, though, "SNL" would embrace New Wave and punk rock. The Cars look and sing wonderfully here. Even the stage setting is terrific.
Time warp me back to this performance. Sensational rendition of the Great "Touch and Go" song that was with me in the bad times and the good times..Amazing how music can stir the emotions...
just saw the Cars in Denver tonight- they rocked and sang this song! sounded great- sad they are missing Benjamin Orr, but they keep on rockin on and kicked some ass! Ric's voice is great!
WOW, filmed just eleven days after I left for basic training. I always loved listening to the CARS and I always had their great music in my cassette or LP collection.
Wow!!! 1st time to see this vid . Do you now how hard it is to play guitar and sing at the same time ? .well I ALWAYS loved this song and must say thank you for the post of it . look maybe you have more of rare songs ? and yes what kind of guitar is elll playing? so great!!!
One of their best songs ever and a great live show to boot. This song (at least at the beginning) always had a Led Zepplen sound to it what with the drums and bass.
I saw them in Toronto 3 weeks before this video. Amazing concert. Went there not realizing they had released the new album so I ended up buying the album at the concert....the good old days
This is just a wonderful video. The guitar break is awesome, Ben's bass is some pretty good work too. I agree, the whole thing, the set, the wardrobe, the white guitars, The Cars baby! So freakin' cool!
@morrisonAV Thank you! I was watching 'Fridays' that night. I also saw them on the Midnight Special, when one of their guests, if I remember correctly, was Iggy Pop. Ben Orr, rest in peace.
@morrisonAV Great Video and probably my most favorite CARS song of all time... Done flawlessly here... Thanks so much for the post. I watch it at least once a Day...
During the first verse, you can see Greg counting to four with the fingers of his left hand. I'm sure he's doing it to prevent himself from playing the riff five times- the beat is in 5/4, but the keyboard riff goes in cycles of four. Super cool video!
Wow, the best video on You Tube ever. Never have seen this and yet here it is, every reason we loved the Cars. Those days you had to be glam, stoner rock or punk if you lived in NYC I guess and these knuckleheads walked right down the middle and rolled it all up with a pinch of Roxy Music and took us into the 80s like a breath of fresh air. This video is as fresh today as the exciting cracking of the cellophane on Panorama back then. Love the black and white dress to match the album back.
I discovered The Cars in the Spring of 1979. I stationed in Korea and enjoying a rare afternoon off at the camp pool when someone put on a bootleg LP of The Cars first album. I was blown away that so many great songs could come from one album. I bought the LP the next day at the BX. Their first two albums are my favorites of all time followed closely by Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon.
@six2112 Elliot Easton is one of the most under-rated guitarists in history. Listen to that solo! Listen to those chords thrown into the middle of the verses. Plus he's left-handed so it all looks cool as hell! Hell would freeze over before Eddie Van Halen played anything as melodic as the solos in this song.
@tgear77: Well said. Van Halen played fast, but so what? No other guitarist put more character, and feeling into a solo than Eliot. He never received the accolades he deserved.
Ocasek's dancing early in the piece is the most animated I've seen from the man! Obviously the man must be able to move to grab PP...

The Cars got their name "The Cars" because they are from CARLISLE, MA. That's how they originated their name...

It's a friggin' travesty the Cars are not in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Either induct the Cars or shut the place down.

Elliott Easton's solos were works of art, every note thought out, and carefully placed in just at the right spot. Cool stuff. Not just jamming, or making noise like so many other players would do.
jimgtr0987654 8 months ago 3
@jimgtr0987654 .... This guy's memorable guitar solos (bye bye love, dangerous type, candy o, best friend's girl, and this song) provided background music to my formative years. Great memories are associated with his guitar sound and the Cars band in general...they were short, technically sound, and original.
When you think of original rock guitarists from the mid 70's through the mid 80's only a few come to mind: Eddie Van Halen, Alex Lifeson, Neil Schon, Gary Richrath, and Eliot Easton.

I think that's Mike Mills of R.E.M. playing keyboards. ? (LOL !)

Gonna see The Cars May 10 in Seattle. First concert for them in 24 years. Should be great!!

One of their best songs ever and a great live show to boot. This song (at least at the beginning) always had a Led Zepplen sound to it what with the drums and bass.

This is just a wonderful video. The guitar break is awesome, Ben's bass is some pretty good work too. I agree, the whole thing, the set, the wardrobe, the white guitars, The Cars baby! So freakin' cool!

Not the most technically proficient keyboardist, but damn did Greg Hawkes come up with the most memorable parts.

@morrisonAV Thank you! I was watching 'Fridays' that night. I also saw them on the Midnight Special, when one of their guests, if I remember correctly, was Iggy Pop. Ben Orr, rest in peace.

This has to be the best song by The Cars
dadokid356 10 months ago

I'm so glad they've reunited with a new album. Too bad Ben has passed on. I hope this new record coming out in May goes multi-platinum for them.

It's unreal to sound this good live. And it's unreal to play like Elliot Easton. He was so melodic and had such incredibly good taste.
125jlm 10 months ago 15
@125jlm Elliot has never played a bad note in his life :)
six2112 9 months ago
@six2112 Elliot Easton is one of the most under-rated guitarists in history. Listen to that solo! Listen to those chords thrown into the middle of the verses. Plus he's left-handed so it all looks cool as hell! Hell would freeze over before Eddie Van Halen played anything as melodic as the solos in this song.
tgear77 9 months ago 23
@tgear77: Well said. Van Halen played fast, but so what? No other guitarist put more character, and feeling into a solo than Eliot. He never received the accolades he deserved.

@MrManfly We're in total agreement. Someone please explain to me why the Cars aren't in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame?
tgear77 8 months ago
@tgear77 hell, why aren't Kiss in there either? or ABBA? because the R&R hall of fame is a joke!!
