and is it an arduino? or is it just similar?

Yep, same thing - although you still need a new "core" folder to put in the hardware/cores folder, since it has to identify the new higher pins for digitalWrite() that the Arduino doesn't have...

So, its exactly as the arduino but with 40some pins? You use exactly the same Ide and everything else to program it as if it were the arduino? cool...
