  • thanks to this scene i can't tell anyone and i literally mean anyone my last name, which is pike, because as soon as i do they always say "don't tell him pike" and every time they say it is like "ow this is clever i bet he has never heard this before." i still love dads army a great sitcom and i will admit this is a really funny/classic moment in the series.

  • #Whistle while you work! Hitler is a twerp! He's half barmy, so's his army, whistle while you work!# I was randomly singing that in class the other day, everyone was looking at me like I was insane so I told them that their names "Were also going on ze list!"

  • haha i always loved this scene!

  • the nine dislikes must be relatives of A Hitler :)

  • @lordofbore

"I tell you Wilson, they're a nation of automatons

Led by a lunatic who looks like Charlie Chaplin"

    I love that line...

  • @gjc82071 'Goodnight Sweetheart' with Nicholas Lyndhurst might be the show you are thinking of?

  • whstle while you work, hitler is a twerp, he is barmy, soes his army, whistle while you work

  • Aw, Pike looks so sweet. Classic stuff!

  • @Goodyfan17 Apparently he was biting the inside of his mouth to stop himself laughing! It took several takes before he managed it - even then you can still hear a faint hint of a suppressed titter when he gets to 'He's half barmy'!

  • God Bless.. I still crease up laughing 30 yrs later .. what a fantastic programme and a credit forever to its creator... it'll still be laughed at in many hundreds of years when the world doesnt know the meaning of the word "War" ..

  • Dont tell him Pike...classic. RIP David Croft

  • Croft and Perry's finest hour, Dads Army still loved buy thousands young and old and rightly so.

  • 6 people told him their name.

  • "I tell you Wilson, they're a nation of automatons led a lunatic who looks like Charlie Chaplin."

Ever since I was a teenager that statement still has me rolling. The fact that it was true, (more or less) only added to the effect.

  • david croft ~ top ! man...

  • No swearing - just gentle funny comedy coming from wonderful characters - actors & script.

  • Do Not Tell Him Pike ! LOL

  • I've got the entire series and that ones my favorite

  • @aidanaidan51 I've got all the Dad's Army aswell and I love it when the characters sing

  • sheer... comic... genius...

  • I only discovered Dad's Army a few years ago but boy am I glad I did! This episode is easily my favourite :3

  • Yes, its brilliant. I remember the laugh this got the very first time it was broadcast...

  • "How dare you compare our glorious leader wiz zat non-Arian clown!"

  • I bought the whole series for dad for Christmas this is my favourite episode. "whistle while you work" looool

  • Even now whenever somebody mentions a list, I put on a German accent and say "You are on ze list".

  • best line in history i got the box set

  • Love Dads Army. 'I dont vant any nasty soggy chips. I vant mine, crisp, unt light brown.'

  • I love how the German officer tried not to smile.

  • favorite episode xD !

  • fucking brilliant.....

  • 4 Dislikes ?! :O Shocking !!!

  • You name vill also gone on zee list. Love it!

  • Zeh leest!

  • 4 peoples names were put on the list....

  • I recently came across someone trying to claim that 'Don't tell him Pike' is a misquote and that Mainwaring doesn't mention his name.

If he didn't say his name... then it wouldn't have been funny. And some of Pike's later lines about trying to get his name off the list wouldn't make sense.

  • What three sad individuals did not like this?

  • @Hangar073

    simple nazis didn't

  • Time and again, this excerpt is voted the funniest moment in TV. At one level, it's baffling that "Don't tell him, Pike" is the funniest thing in over 50 years of TV comedy, but at another, it's testament to the affection we hold this series in, and the comedy timing of the actors, together with the writers' skills. In comedy, less is often more.

  • im only 11 and this show is soooooooooooooooooooooooooooo cool

  • whistle while while you work hittler is a terwp hes half bamy so'shis amy whistle while you work

  • at around 1:27, even the German u-boat captain is struggling not to laugh! British comedy at its best!

  • Hold down 1, Lol!

"Don't tell him Pike" Best line ever!

  • I know another song about hitler... About his balls actually (or lack of them)... I dont know if you've heard it? Goes to the tune of 'Colonel Bogey'...

  • @ttfnrsvpasap

You've got it all wrong. Hitler had only one ball, and poor old Goebbels had no balls at all. I think Himmler had something similar.

  • I know another song about Hitler.... About his balls actually.... I dont know if you've heard it? Goes to the tune of 'Colonel Bogey'...

  • Hah!!!!! My dad always says to me 'don't tell him Pike!' and the first time I was like 'what?' and then he told me so when he says it now I'm like 'haha!' lol. And I have had the dads army theme tune in my head for the last week.... Laugh Everyone it's good for you! XD

  • Nice example of Jose Mourinho utilizing his leadership ability

  • lol! this video is legend!!! I always watch Dads Army when its on tv!! luv Dads Army!

  • Absoloutly brilliant! :)

  • Lol I love this sitcom, and that bit is great, captain man makes me laught :D

  • I don't get it. so what IS Pike's name?

  • @mrspivvy Pike's name is Pike. Sounds silly, but it is

  • @Rhosmari Its Frank Pike!!!!

  • The German officer is struggling not to smirk at the end XD

  • I love how Pike's trying so hard not to laugh at the end XD

  • Such a great line! Why did they wait until series 6 to release this episode?

German officer is actually a Welshman - whoo!

  • @MultiBelle22 hes married to ruth -hi-`di-hi`-madoc

  • @unclemort1960 I know! The best actors in the world are often Welsh x

  • this is such a great television show i they should start showing it again it would be much better then this American shit Glee

  • Turn on the closed captions (which Youtube helpfully reminds us are a BETA feature) and enjoy a dramatic tale about patents or something.

  • Whistle while you work,

    Hitler is a twerp,

    He's half balmy,

    So his army,

    Whistle while you work!

I've sung that everyday since I heard it. =D

  • classic!

  • "Don't panic, Mr Mainwaring!"

  • This makes me think of Death Note

  • I take it the twat who voted down was a german? , or just a very dull person.

  • @stevanroth just because it's about the war makes the thumbs down from a German huh for all you know it could be anyone from any where so don't just judge

  • A classic !

  • 'Adolf Hitler is a jerk

    He's nothing but a Nazi,

He thinks that he will win the war

    He's not so hotsey-totsey!'

Thumbs up if you have seen the American version of this scene!

  • @12Jakeyboy To be honest i don't want to! Dad's Army is British through and through.

  • @tomharding No thumbs up... Shows you're right then!

  • Anyone aged about 40-45 will mention this clip to someone of the same age and both will instantly deliver that line.

  • @philipareed so true

  • One of the funniest things I've ever seen

  • Why would you put the punch line in the title?

  • @username5215 So we can regognise the clip?

  • no luaghing in the ranks u-boat commander

  • Mainwaring would be better off shooting the Germans in the foot rather than himself!

  • Whistle while you work

    Hitler is a tworp

He's half barmy so's his army

    Whilstle while you work-

YOUR NAME WILL GO ON THE LIST, Vat is it

    ''Dont tell him pike''

    PIKE

    ( shit )

  • I like the way the U-boat captain is trying not to laugh at 1:28

  • A classic episode! I can't believe they waited until Series 6 to come up with this idea! :D

  • 1 person told the officer pikes name

  • A proper comedy! thank goodness for videos, dvds and repeats...

    long live dad's army

  • SO EPIC.

  • lol!

  • LOL!!! Actually, the funniest moment is: '...you'd better come with me...'..

  • It never fails to make me laugh. CLASSIC !!

  • 1 person pressed the wrong button. Where can I watch the full episode?

  • Classic

  • great

  • Dad's Army = classic comedy and a lot better than the present. FACT

  • Don't tell him Pike!

  • lol if you look closely everyone is trying not to laugh including the German officer.

  • Pike "Whistle while you work, Hitler is a twerp, he's half barmy and so is his Army, whistle while you work!"

    German "Vhat is your'e name?"

Capt Mainwarning "Don't tell him Pike!"

    Absolute classic

  • Even when I'm an old, gibbering, drooling woman with a fading memory and thin, grey hair, I will still be able to quote this scene line for line!

  • I do not want soggy chips.

  • @KingDukas I vant zem crizp,unt light brown.

  • lol love this

  • My grandfather used to love this, I got him the complete box set of DvD's he really enjoyed them, few weeks later he got really ill and sadly died, this reminds me of him alot. He was an army man himself and this & sergeant bilko were amongst some of his favorite TV shows when i see them they make me sad and happy at the same time.

    R.I.P G

  • watch ´´celebrity mastermind Ian lavender - dont tell em pike on you tube. and the reaction by Ian lavender when they still confront him with this line. hahahaha its so great

  • you can see he's definately trying not to laugh. he used to live near me in st.albans as well with his wife. i never saw him though.

  • whistle while you work

    hitler is a twerp

    he's half barmy

    so's his army

    whistle while you work

    (no intentional offence to ANYBODY)

  • @Alzerak except the Germans lol!!

  • Ok this is wierd, the owner of this channel is called david croft, and my granddads name is david croft also, coincidence? I THINK NOT!

  • You name is alzo going on ze list.

  • Y'know I used to hate Dad's Army as a kid. However, seeing these clips on YouTube a few years ago helped me appreciate the cleverness of the scrips and the great comic touches! This is what YouTube should be all about!

  • @thefrecklepuny I know what you mean there. My dad used to put this on all the time and i never really appreciated it when I was younger. Now I love watching these old sitcoms with him. This and Steptoe and Son are real classics.

  • "They'll know by the tone of my voice that I'm in charge." Classic Mainwaring!

  • Arthur Lowe had an incredible way of delivering his lines.

It was very hard to tell (even for the director) if he had really forgotten his lines when he hesitated to deliver them or whether he was acting.

  • cant stop singing it

    whistle while you work,

    hitler is a twirp,

    hes half barmy,

    serves his army

    whistle while you work

  • Even though you almost knew what was going to happen it's still brilliant.

Simple yet very effective. I still laugh.

  • HaHa LOL so damn funny:-)!

  • at 1:28,you can see the u-boat captain trying not to smile/laugh

  • LOLOLOLOLOL

    DONT TELL HIM PIKE!!

has me in stiches every time

  • lol, has anyone else noticed Wilson crossing himself at the far right of the screen just as Pike finishes singing? epic!

  • hahahahahaha classic

  • dads army is my favourite bbc sitcom, so funny with a great cast of characters

  • simply brilliant

  • What episode is this? love this btw

  • how you can sit there watching this with a straight face i have no idea :D

  • They really don't make them like this anymore. This and Allo' Allo' I still watch to this day whenever they run them. It's fantastic at the moment because they're running old black and white ones which I've never seen before, I think they were lost but recently recovered. "The battle for Godfrey's Cottage" was on at the weekend and I was in stitches at Godfrey's sisters. They told one of them that the invasion was on, the Germans are here!: "I shall have to put on more tea". Beautiful

  • love it. Can see ian lavender biting his tongue when mainwaring said 'don't tell him pike!' was in an interview and said he had to bite his tongue or he'd burst out laughing :D

  • I'm only 16 and this is just pure and original comedy. I love Pike and that line :)

  • @OneVoiceOneDesire

Compared to the greasy, filthy reality of what the U-boot guys actually had to work with...

  • Oh, yes ve are

  • Great line. So simple but brilliant.

  • Whistle while you work, Hitler is a twerp, he's half barmy so his army whistle while you work, Best one ever
