At first, I thought, "This is too lyrical! He wrote it in a march rhythm!"--but then it occurred to me that this interpretation might suit the meaning better :)
beautiful voice. not like i'm in any position to critique, as i haven't done anything better, but the slight lyrical variants aren't necessary to make the song your own; if anything, i feel as though it slightly detracts from it. inflecting the song with your own melody is enough, and it's great to keep something, and someone, that should be so prominent nowadays as such. cheers.
It's beautiful, the arrangement is fabulous and you have a gorgeous voice. I think you have plenty of great raw emotion and it just comes out differently. This version comes out more like a version of Danny Boy, I heard sung by Anne Byronne which is the most gorgeous version of that song I've ever heard, and this version of Phil's makes me feel the same way as Anne's Danny Boy, keep going you're one of the few people who post on Youtube who actually should.
I like it but damn it wheres the fire you hear it a little in your voice on the last I aint marching anymore but when Phil sings this I cry when you sing it I think thats a pretty arrangement and voice and it is but I guess I like raw emotion that only Phil could give this song but way to put ur stamp on a Great song
I think you have alot of talent.....but to do a Phil Ochs song you have to remember that he didn't care to be famous....he had a mission and bled for his music....do you bleed for your message?
im sorry to say this but i like this but phil ochs is much better because hes faster and he done it with more passion. He did this song before veitnam was a big issue and still hated the "conflict". Phil just had the fire and anger in him all directed to racsim and big business and the lies of government. Him, Pete Seeger, and woddy guthrie are the greatist anti-establishment singers ever. But this is a good cover
Yes, I heard Phil do it also. He will always be near and dear to me. But, this is a beautiful expression of the power of the song.LiliAna keep up the good work with your fine voice.
You're good and you're authentic. But one suggestion. This song, which I heard live in Chicago in '68 is not a lament. It's a protest song. It's about stupid policies killing boys your age. Your brother. Your boyfriend. Sing like you hurt and like you're mad. If you don't, if you aren't, why would you bother to sing these words? Put your guts into it. It'll flow.
I'm an admirer. I watched the fun on tv. Did you get bashed or gassed by Mayor Daley's finest? Is the streets where you heard Phil do this song? I agree Liliana doesn't sound very pissed off.
I heard Ochs sing the song inside in an auditorium of some sort, filled with protesters, many of whom burned their draft cards during the song. I only got hit once, just innocently crossing the street. The tension was high and the police were at the end of their rope. Of course, we weren't exactly feeling relaxed either. Everyone there got gassed. There was no way to avoid that.
You remind me of me of my sis (a great singer by swedish measures)... but I have too admit that your voice is outstanding by comparison. And the choice of tune is really great! Thumbs up and good luck in all you future endeavors (had too google that last word =) )
From Sweden... You're great! Given any toughts too a version of Joe Hill? P.S. Divine voice and as far as I can tell outstanding guitaring. If you you ever try too make it big in scandinavia count me in as a fan =)
Young lady, you have a lot of talent. And you chose one of Phil Och's best songs. It's good to see his songs live on in the younger generations. After all these years his songs are more relevant now than ever.
Post Script.......This was the first song of his I ever heard.......was close to 20 years ago....Heard it on Public Radio....Been a fan ever since....RIP Phil...you were a master wordsmith
Tis always nice to share Phil's Music.....May I ask how old you are.....It's alway's nice to share good music with those that are unfamiliar or of younger generation....Phil wrote many songs...tis nice to see a pretty girl pay tribute to him... :) I know most of his songs, even the obscure ones...Take Care and keep enjoying Phil's music...he was one of a kind... Dylan can't do him justice :)

I've never heard Joan Baez's version of this, but I'd be very interested to! Did she ever record it? If so, is it on any live albums or anything? I tried to research it, but I'm not finding anything!

I think these songs will nicely reflect your style, yet expand your skills. Meanwhile, keep the songs toolin, but don't forget the schoolin.
