I am a man who has seen death one too many times... for each time life began once again. Or perhaps I was just getting a glimpse of the real world... Is it possible that I am asleep? Death being the only chance of waking up... Well, I guess now I'll know. See you, space cowboy.
I can just listen to this song and think back on everything I've done in my life...I don't need any photographs, no video recordings of family events...This song somehow brings it to the surface in the most beautiful and calming way. A big thanks to Yoko Kanno for her composition skills.
@v2791 It's from the movie. both Spike and the bad guy say it in the movie because they didn't die (Spike thrown out of a very high train while wounded and the bad guy jumping off an overpass) correct me if im wrong xD
@v2791 might be way off base with this could be due to the fact the both have old baggage related to a near death experience that altered there fates and has driven them to the point they're at so its more asking are you living here and now or are you stuck back then
@cerberuspaw hmmm, never thought of that, it makes sense... I guess if they said "are you living in the past" wouldnt sound as cool. Thank you for the insight ! It makes sense to me now ^^
Mai Yamane gets the credit for this. One of the best vocalists out there, and that is NOT an opinion; she can sing in so many styles so well. She has the soul of Aretha Franklin and James Brown combined. Really like Yoko's stuff but in reality this is just a standard gospel progression nothing fancy, it's the musicians that make this one work.
The sad thing when you listen to the song it never says if they broke through the door or not. Sad to think they never managed to shed the chains that allowed them to open up.
I was deeply confused when I looked up Mai on wiki. when it kept saying 'She'. For nearly 10 years I thought Mai was a man. I'm still in shock but it won't stop me from loving HER voice. <3.. Why why did it take so long to look her up lol
@pulmonaryarchery88 me and probably many others would cry. I have no shame I cried at Spikes closing monologue. :D But they should have. It would have been Epic beyond words.
@MindfulPerson i duno there's a lot of people out there that wanted to have him wake up in his mass of bandages with Faye sitting over him as he wakes at the end of 26, i mean i know it wouldn't make sense with all the closure they put on it but seeing him go was too much
@MrTsorge I picture that scene. But it's a point of view from the bed. Eyes open, see Faye on the side of the bed and Faye says "Wake up, time to stop dreaming." and fade to black. It wouldn't really add much, but I don't think it would hurt either. Alternatively, it's Julia on the side of the bed, and it's all just another dream.
Now look here buddy, Im a country man. That means I solve problems with mah bare hands. Not philosophic problems... but f'rinstance. How am I gonna stop someone from breakin into mah house? The answer? Work fer it. If that don't work... Work harder.
@AutumnDevi uh i dont think thats what this song is about...its about the lonelieness and isolation of a person that has killed other people...."I kept a chain upon my door (my soul, myself) to shake the shame of Cain (being a murderer) into submission".
Does anyone actually try to understand things, or do they just always try to make it relate to them?

This has got to be my fav. song from Cowboy Bebop, hell my fav. song from Yokko kanno since it's the one that got me into her music and Jazz / Blues altogether. The ONE thing I didn't like about this song is the fact that the words 'Gotta Knock A Little Harder" are never said.
Doesn't make it a bad song, but imagine listening to this song with an open ear for those words. 'HEAR IT COMES! ... what the fuck? Not yet?'
