I don't know, the final version was a bit generic for such an interesting company name... and to me the line and three little bulbs look like a sperm seen through a microscope. Maybe it's a visual that actually does, in a way, promote 'energy'?
But I'm sure that's not what the creator was thinking. My two bits.
I can't sketch very well I don't really typeset with pencil either, I leave that to when I get on the computer. But I believe beginning with initial sketches at the start of the job can drastically improve the direction of the logo design till the end. It's more freeform and not so as oquilluksound said 'Web 2.0'. The final logo here is very standard and almost predictable
Did I see yellow type on a white background? I would have left that out of the video.
I agree with the sketches. You need to start with pencil to paper. And even before that stage, there should be something addressing the design brief issued by the client. Even a mind map by the designer would have been great starting point.
@hulagun Not everyone works the same way. Some people don't sketch because it's just now how they do things. Also the client doesn't always know what they want, which is why they hire designers and agencies. Maybe they had free reign on the design and very basic concepts to work within? And who knows if they didn't sketch or do a mind map anyway? They may have just left it out of the video for simplicity sake, or could have an NDA. Just judge it on what you see, not what you don't.
Where are the sketches? Design starts with thumbnails of concepts first, not straight to the computer. These are all very Web 2.0 like, but i it were to start on paper with pages of concepts, something more solid might be found.
I havent started anything with a pen and paper since I was in high school, I do occasionally step away from the computer midway and sketch stuff out, but its much simpler to just bang out quick stuff to get ideas flowing in AI then on paper, at least personally.
we always learned thumbnail sketches in school, but i have yet to do that. It isn't the same impact as designing on the computer. you have little control over the typeset, and some of use simply aren't good at freehanding.
@oquilluksound thats not entirely true, it really depends on the artists preference and yes beginner logo designers probly should have some sort of rough draft, but this guy clearly knows what he wants his design to look like. So to say that one has to start with a thumbnail isn't necessarily true. I'm not trying to rip on you but i just thought ur statement needed tweaking thats all.
i liked your concept at 1:40 most. thought it was most appropriate

it's technically good but the final logo looks like a soap logo.

Wait, that was a serious video? I was waiting for the punch line. W.E.T.
That was an interesting run through the design process. Not sure I agree the final logo was the strongest.

I don't like the final logo... it's almost illegible

oh yeah the daily process

So many of the drafts could have been perfect as the final logo. So much of this process is the almost random feelings if the artist or client.

Thanks for an EXCELLENT video on the creative process of a logo.
This is so much more worth it than any tutorial on the web.
