Don't say 'Guard is harder than band' and vice versa. Both have challenges, and both have things which are simpler than stuff that the other does. Yes, the lack of respect many people in band (at least my band) have for us is infuriating, but turning on each other saying that kind of thing just makes it worse. I am a guard member, and while I find it extremely physically, emotionally, and mentally draining, it really just comes down to that feeling that you know you're doing something amazing.
You know you're on drumline when watching a video full of sweaty guys chopping out interests you more than girls in skimpy workout clothing dancing around.
I still like my ideal... the whole guard gets sick at the same time and can't perform at a competition, then let the band see what score they get with out us... that might teach them to have some respect for color guard
@Lori235 AMEN....my band mocks us mercilessly and they always say "go twirl something" well lets see how far i can "twirl" this flag down your tuba doggone it
I wish my band respected us in the guard nearly as much as the band here does... And the stuff here is so true, I'm a second year in high school and I love guard so much because if you don't love someting you might as well not do it...
I'm in the saxophone line in my high school's marching band, and I have so much respect for color guard. People don't know how much skill it takes to keep everyone synchronized, while moving and doing difficult tosses. I know marching band & Drum Corps would be missing its soul without color guard, so thanks for this post.
When i started band (in general, i know these are corps) i had no idea wat a color guard was, so when i saw my first dci show, i was trying to figure out why some ppl werent wearing uniforms (the color guard)
I think i watched the color guard that whole night...Pit and colorguard are my fav sections to watch--ignorant ppl make them seem like underdogs but they work just as much and mean just as much as ever other section
@PetalTrumpet95 I personally think they do..especially concerning DCI and I couldn't do either one so I respect them both for what they do--I think they make the shows better; that's just my opinion
im a freshman!(: and this is my first year in colorguard and it is amazingg, but im on my dads thing soo yea. but i love colorguard and although it looks easyy it is very difficult marching and twirling at the same time we have to march and toss singles and double at the same time with flags and riffles(: its so much fun tho(:
I was on the rifle line by my second season of guard (so my Freshman winterguard show) I had fun being a back flag for my first marching show which is on youtube (search Danza Del Sol) but I'm excited to have a rifle in my hands on the field instead of a mat :)
..... so to those who laugh at us and call us names. lets see you get on a field and toss a flag rifle or sabre while dancing and keeping count. lets see you dedicate your free time to hours and hours in the hot sun or in the rain, many nights of rehearsals and memorize an 11 min show and perform in front of thousands of people and judges. this is not easy and that is why you wont try it. that is why you critisize us.
im only 15 and am going on my second year of color guard. i absolutly love it and cant imagine my life without. i've been teased called many names like "flag twirler/girl" but you know what? i think that anyone and everyone who critizises color guard or band, is just afriad of a challenge in their life. they dont know how hard we work and dont understand our passion for what we do. they havent expeirienced that hight of extacy when we perform.....
The amount of times i have been called a "flag girl" "flag dancer" and loads more - soo annoying! Lol but i love being a guard geek, i perform in Winterguard, and i absolutely love it! Would spin night and day if i could =) xx
Times change. Things evolve...for the better most of the time. Seeing 30-some years of the same type of guard shows would be very tiring - we change in order to accomplish something new, something even more difficult, something greater to appreciate. if you're referring to military guards, well, both groups are in completely different leagues nowadays-yes, we broke off from them to evolve years ago. That's it. It's two completely different worlds now.
Yeah. You're probably right, it's a lot different now. And in a lot of ways, a lot more difficult than old school. I wrote my first comment without seeing a lot of modern color guard. But, I've attended a bunch of shows this year and can appreciate it a lot more. There are still alumni corps around if you enjoy military style + you can root for the kids in junior corps with their modern style. Old school/new school-it's all great. BTW, I marched '79-'80 SCV, just when new school guard started.

Where are the majorettes? I'm on the drumline and I'm a feature twirler, so I understand what this is all about. I know colorguard works hard, but it would've been nice to see a video about twirlers.
This is so true. So many people don't understand the bond that you create with other people in the guard. You have to stick up for eachother and help eachother to push past your brakeing point. Once you go though a year of colorguard with a bunch of people you can never go back to a life without guard. And you never loose the friendship you created with the other people of your colorguard.

....... 5 stiches later let's just say i was wrong

I understand that it's hard, but the rest of the band has to play music and march(cept for pit hehe :D) so your routine is your music.
