  • He should have kept his stage name Cougar, that was cool!!!!

  • He should of kept his name COUGAR, thats cool!!!

  • As many have said! John Mellencamp speaks for all true Americans in his songs!

  • went to see JC three times and he never played this. Major disappointment.

  • I remember playing bass at small clubs in the '70's... This is how it was! Good times...

  • i love this song

  • Cougar's BEST

  • Thanks for posting this. I liked this song for 30 years and this is first I saw the video!! Cool. Brings back memories for sure.

  • where is the song "pray for me"? from miami john mellencamp

  • This is the second thing I ever heard from John. "Lover" first and then this. But it was "Pray For Me" that had me since. Unfortunately, I wasn't very fair to John in the 2000's and I should have never began the Springsteen comparisons. But it's all coming back around and I miss it sometimes. This was a great video to bring me back to where it all started for me. Thanks for the post.

  • @jtmichaelson Hi , how do I find the song "pray for me" I know it is on the miami soundtrack back in the courgar days

  • @swgrace1 'Pray For Me' is on the 1979 album, 'John Cougar'. I don't ever recall a soundtrack called Miami - I may be wrong.

But all of the remasters are available. "Miami" is also available on the album - Amazon has a million of them cheap.

  • Don't care about Need a Lover. This song was the first time I'd heard the name John Cougar. Awesome song from a long time ago when life was so much fun. Lots of good memories in this one, Thanx for the post.

  • Love it! Classic Mellencamp...couldn't ask for more!

  • good song

  • I believe "I Need a Lover" (December 1979) is credited as his first big hit. But this is still a great song.

  • This was his first big hit :)

  • he is singing about cunts

  • @HUTUMAGIC oh my god! are you being serious?!

  • @HUTUMAGIC Often in his early work John sang sexually referenced stuff. The first (U.S.) album has hidden references throughout but the Nothing Matters album has "Cry Baby" and "Tonight" which were extremely open. John admitted the 'Chili Dog' outside the Tasty-Freeze is not a hot dog with chili. It's in the book (I believe) called The Roots and Improbable Rise of John Cougar Mellencamp (1986) written by Timothy White. Lots great stuff in that book. Plus just today I heard he and Elaine split up

  • Hold me tight

    and kiss me

    ...small paradise

  • !st song i ever heard from him god i am old!!!

American fool. +++ I have them all...

  • awsome mellancampin;want 2 c tonight from nothing matters;yaaaa

  • Why isn't Kenny Arnoff playing the drums in this video?

  • Its before Kenny joined the band

  • because his drummer was Tom Knowles for his first albums

  • Paradise is indeed small

  • i always loved this song

    it a great song

  • Mellancamp's first and best hit! Small Paradise,a palce he said you don't want to be in.

  • My absolute favorite song!!

  • Man!! Havent heard this in 20+ yrs...tryin to find Hot Night in a Cold Town...Cougars version

  • I have to agree, one of his finest tunes. Its about life and its not political. I think this was one of the first songs I ever heard from him and was instantly hooked. I was 17 in '79, just trying myself to figure out what love and life had in store for me. Would love to sit a drink a beer with him on a gorgeous summer evening in the Midwest, about an hour before sunset.

  • Damn, that was me in 1979. Every word you wrote.

  • Young JCM looks alot like a young Michael Hutchence from INXS -- same hairdo and everything.

  • This is-okay, miles away from 'Pink houses' or 'Check it Out', but not bad, early stuff.

  • metallica new song sounds just like small paradise in the intro of the song..

  • first chorus looks to me like Mike says f me instead of kiss me lol

  • This is one of his best, no doubt about it. He's only about an hour away from me in Indiana. I went to Ball State with his cousin. He was cool. John likes to keep a low profile but he's a super guy.

  • one of my favorites from the past. Thanks

  • This is the Song that actually pushed him into the mainstream! Might very well be his best too. Look how young he was in '79.

  • A classic early Mellencamp song.

He is a "roadgeek tunes" favorite here at "The Georgia Road Geek" and someday, I'd love to crank up this one, "Pink Houses", "Rumble Seat", "I Need A Lover", and other Mellencamp songs while haulin a** up I-65 in Indiana.

  • I also have always thought this is his best song. 'it ain't love, but it ain't bad...'

  • soo funny when you are a kid and you still know this is he best song......

  • Probably my favorite JCM tune...but the first time I heard it, I thought he was in love with gambling...and talking about a small pair of dice! But the doctors say I'm ok now :-)

  • Damn ! I love this song ! Thank You very much !

  • best thing mellencamp ever did and I am one who loved everything he did.

  • This is so rare! THANK YOU!!
