This is the second thing I ever heard from John. "Lover" first and then this. But it was "Pray For Me" that had me since. Unfortunately, I wasn't very fair to John in the 2000's and I should have never began the Springsteen comparisons. But it's all coming back around and I miss it sometimes. This was a great video to bring me back to where it all started for me. Thanks for the post.
Don't care about Need a Lover. This song was the first time I'd heard the name John Cougar. Awesome song from a long time ago when life was so much fun. Lots of good memories in this one, Thanx for the post.
@HUTUMAGIC Often in his early work John sang sexually referenced stuff. The first (U.S.) album has hidden references throughout but the Nothing Matters album has "Cry Baby" and "Tonight" which were extremely open. John admitted the 'Chili Dog' outside the Tasty-Freeze is not a hot dog with chili. It's in the book (I believe) called The Roots and Improbable Rise of John Cougar Mellencamp (1986) written by Timothy White. Lots great stuff in that book. Plus just today I heard he and Elaine split up
I have to agree, one of his finest tunes. Its about life and its not political. I think this was one of the first songs I ever heard from him and was instantly hooked. I was 17 in '79, just trying myself to figure out what love and life had in store for me. Would love to sit a drink a beer with him on a gorgeous summer evening in the Midwest, about an hour before sunset.
This is one of his best, no doubt about it. He's only about an hour away from me in Indiana. I went to Ball State with his cousin. He was cool. John likes to keep a low profile but he's a super guy.
He is a "roadgeek tunes" favorite here at "The Georgia Road Geek" and someday, I'd love to crank up this one, "Pink Houses", "Rumble Seat", "I Need A Lover", and other Mellencamp songs while haulin a** up I-65 in Indiana.
Probably my favorite JCM tune...but the first time I heard it, I thought he was in love with gambling...and talking about a small pair of dice! But the doctors say I'm ok now :-)
He should have kept his stage name Cougar, that was cool!!!!

@swgrace1 'Pray For Me' is on the 1979 album, 'John Cougar'. I don't ever recall a soundtrack called Miami - I may be wrong.
But all of the remasters are available. "Miami" is also available on the album - Amazon has a million of them cheap.

I believe "I Need a Lover" (December 1979) is credited as his first big hit. But this is still a great song.

Young JCM looks alot like a young Michael Hutchence from INXS -- same hairdo and everything.

This is-okay, miles away from 'Pink houses' or 'Check it Out', but not bad, early stuff.
