It is funny how peoples idea of how their vehicle should look is entirely based on the history of auto advertisement. If you think about it and ask what you need to travel from A to B the idea to bring many hundreds of kg steel along with you is really hilarious. Like having a 1000 kg washing machine that uses 100 times the energy or else it would be ugly. Or you order 1500 hamburgers when you are hungry. Then argue shit where did all my money go? and: Hamburgers are to expensive!

But what really stops this kind of travel from becoming a reality, is bought out politicians, lobbying, and laws... which there basically all the same thing.

@MRSketch09 It's true that politics plays a huge role, but if the right company picks it up and markets it to a broad audience (think China, not North America) it will succeed.

The Smart ForTwo is a good example of a smaller vehicle that, though odd-looking, has made strong inroads in our Western World. More cars designed like that will come, and people will buy them... I'm optimistic! :)

I really want to see things like this succeed in the US though. Although I am sure we can see cooler designs here... though.

We have a gap in the US. We have motorcycles, one person... and then we have cars, that can carry four people. We don't have anything that fits the niche between the two. Like a enclosed personal transportation device that carries one plus, cargo for cheap, and looks stylish.

@lilbrudder32 Say we take a good recumbent bicycle with electrical assist and an aerodynamic body and we fit an airbag in it. Now we drive the thing into a wall with 100 km/hr. We notice the wall is still there, the driver is unharmed and the bicycle only needs modest repairs. Actually, in most common traffic accidents the bicycle would come out unharmed. The lack of tons of steel makes breaking a lot easier and the thing consumes 5 bucks worth of power per week (without solar paint on it)
