I won't comment Luke's evaluation of death penalty and statism. I only believe the way he critisizes statism is highly problematic. No matter if the state exists or not, different rules of behavior apply to each individual - and different individuals are also allowed to apply different sorts and ammounts of violent coercion in different situations. It has always been like that - and it applies also to chimps, our closest relatives, and indeed also to all other social animals.

I think the death penalty is too easy... the person doesn't actually get to suffer for their crimes. Having to spend the entirety of their life locked up, in isolation, is a much better fit.

As far as having the government use violence, it certainly HAS to use violence if it is to stop violence. The question is what level of violence is appropriate. Does the death penalty end up saving more innocent lives than it ends? I'm not convinced. But you can't oppose all government violence; if you do, you have to advocate the disbandment of police intervention and government penalties. If you rely on someone other than the government, you end up with retaliatory justice which doesn't end.
