You can actually skip that whole jump section in that level by using the medusa heads. If you stand still and jump straight up with timing that'll make a medusa head hit you from underneath, it'll send you straight upward. You can get onto one of the upper islands at the very start of that room using this. It sacrifices a little bit of HP, but there's a hidden food spot RIGHT after that, and it's worth the saved time even if you don't get the food.

This is my all time favorite stage, even if it was(is) hard to defeat Death. I even have a necklace that looks like one of the skeletons hanging around
