I grew up in Wyoming and I'll never forget this game. I was 9yrs old and on this day Barry became my favorite football player and still is to this day. I was lucky enough to meet him once and he was humble, polite, and all smiles. Too bad there are not more like him.
Yeah really. I mean, you could say Hershel Walker was the best college rb because he had all the long term records and did a full showing. Or that Emmit Smith is the best rb in NFL history because he had the records and the rings. But the best OVERALL; college and NFL rb is hands down Barry Sanders. He was so consistently good it was amazing.
i agree he was the best hands down but he wasnt the fastest, he did however the best moves, instincts and tremendous power in those legs to keep most defenders from bringing him down. i mean looks at his thighs compared to his build and height lol, theyre like giant turkey drumsticks
this is crazy. i love how no one hates barry sanders. hes too modest and badass. football players want to be him, girls want to have him, ou is kicking themselves for not recruiting him, and osu fans just love to watch him work his magic
barry sanders is one of the all time greats you put him up against any team and he runs like that. Wyoming was a much better team than they get credit for.
Barry is the best runningback who ever breathed. There will never be a runner with those moves. There are faster and more powerful but none as talented and inteligent. Barry saw the blocks form like Ive never seen. He is the juke master!
Attention: self; agred?!? Barr?!? SPELLCHECK PLEASE! It's BARRY Sanders, one of the most masterful football players that's ever performed on the gridiron! Show respect by taking the time to spell correctly!!!
No No No your wrong and right. Barry might have stayed if they resigned his friend. but also he did demand a trade but he was stuck in a contract for a few years and they would not trade him. So he retired.
Barry Sanders is in a league of his own, what this man could do with the football in his hands has never been witnessed by human eyes before or after. Barry is the G.O.A.T. period.
Ditto...He thrived under a one back four receiver set run and shoot offense which is extinct in the NFL with no fullback and usually no blocking tight end...He created his own lane out of thin air...Imagine if he traded places with Emmitt and kept playing... Just IMAGINE... The Lions front office and GM should be shot for holding back a LEGEND...
barry had no blockers no team and always carried the lions even though they never went no wear, and if they lions would of resigned his good friend on the offenzive line, he prollly would have stayed, instead he retired in his prime becuz he was tired of bein on a shitty team, i hate the lions for what they did, but if i was barry i would have demanded a trade, not retire
People, people!! The best two running backs of all time are Jim Brown and Barry Sanders. Jim Brown averaged 5.2 yards per carry. Barry Sanders averaged 5.0 yards per carry. Jim Brown has been retired for 42 years and he is still in the top ten for most career rushing yards.. If Barry had played another 4 years, only rushing for a 1,000 yards per year he would have rushed for over 19,000 yards
Damn Right....Barry Sanders was a MONSTER. 15,000 yds in NINE years is just rediculous. Even in his 9th year he had nearly 1500 yards. He's a monster. Will LT eclipse that? I think so. nearly 10,000 yards in 6 years. Both guys are super-humble and uber-athletic.
Barry had 13,778 after 9 seasons. That's #1 and about 1200 yds better than the next guy on the list after nine. I agree. In a few years, it'll be the fab five: Sanders, Payton, Brown, L.T. and Emmitt.
but if he was in barrys situation..to be on a team with NO blocking at all....ppl probably wouldnt remember his name today.
emmitt was surrounded by the cowboys DYNASTY.
barry wasnt.and averaged 5 yards per carry.
so it goes..barry sanders...jim brown..and walter payton..all at #1. then gale sayers at #2 (he would have been higher but he only played for 6 years.)THEN it goes emmitt.
Emmitt overstayed his welcome to beef up his stats. Imagine if Barry would have played the same amount of years as Emmitt. Both Hall of Famers though...kudos
Barry had 42 touchdowns and 2,700 yards his JUNIOR year before going pro...
next closest to these numbers?
oh yeh...Barry claims he goes into his room for hours at a time with his bible and talks to God (and I think this means God talks back)...
God appointed Barry a light for generations to come at what happens if you reach out to God (for hours in private and not for show...but to actually listen)
no no no...you got it all wrong my friend..it goes jim brown and barry sanders at #1..(you can check browns video..try not to shit yourself) and at #2 walter payton and smith
he retired because he respected walter payton, before and after his death ,,, i never seen a player score so much and never celebrate or raise his hands well scoreing great man he is ,,,,,,,, ps the lions wouldnt release him either
Could of? He would of broken it so bad that emmit smith would of never been able to break it. Barry Sanders is the greatest running back to ever walk the earth bar none, he's the greatest and no one can match him.
thank you for the greatest rb who ever lived. you supplied the best ive seen. wish we had the clip of his run against 5 would be tackling chicago bears where he flipped upside down landed on his feet and ran in for the TD. this guy was simply unbelievable, i miss him on thanksgiving!!!!
CMSdline, when he ran the 40 for the NFL scouts; he was running late so he came to the practice site directly from the plane. He took a cab to the site and arrived in old, worn-out jeans, regular shoes, didn't warm up and ran a 4.38 on his first try. The scouts said "Ok Barry, we've seen enough."
Rod Woodson blew out his knee when Barry gave him a little shake and Rod tried to plant and stay with him. It looked like Woodson went to tackle Barry, Barry did a little juke, and Woodson dropped like he had been hit by sniper fire.
5 TD'S?? Thats crazy!! I wasn't alive when he did this in real life but when I watch It on film I think the guy is a freak lol. What was his 40 time?? Im sure faster than 4.4
The only reason OSU did'nt win the national championship that year was because of the defense. Although it was really the best college offence ever, they had one of the WORST defense in the country. Ranked like 180ish I believe. They gave up horrible points to opponents. The offence would just run out of time. Still, I grew up in Stillwater that was the best time ever!!
And this guy was ranked #3 in College Football Honor Roll in backs... to bad them old farts couldn't get past the 70s. Btw, somehow Hershel Walker was ranked #1 on the list #2 was OJ.
The real list goes Sanders then OJ as the Greatest College RB's ever. ESPN just probably wasn't thinking when they did there research the right way.
are you kidding? no one likes barry as much as i did, but Hershel was the nastiest running back on the college level anyone has ever seen. Just a complete beast. That has nothing to do with old farts. Look up old film of Hershel at Georgia. Just as fast as Barry, but would run you over and stare you down as he ran in the end zone.
yeah dude if he was on dallas (even though i love emmit) i would have benn the greatest running back ever but he is not now ><,, he would of stayed on the cowboys for like forever and would of never retire early just because detroit could not go anywhere in playoffs
Greatest season in college football history. ESPN's Page 2 ranked it as the greatest season in the history of team sports.
Add the 222 yards and 5 Tds from this game (in just 3 qtrs) to the amazing 2,628 yards, 39Tds and 3,250 all-purpose yards during the 11-game regular season.
12 games, 2,850 rushing yards and 44 Tds.
Barry is the greatest RB that ever lived, college or pro.
I think the reason for him retiring was because he knew the lions were not going anywhere anytime soon.

In his Junior Season:
-Sanders rushed for 2,628 yards, an NCAA record.
-He had 3,249 total yards, an NCAA record.
-Sanders scored 39 TDs (37 rushing, 1 kick return, 1 punt return), an NCAA record.
-He averaged 7.6 yards per carry.
-He rushed for 300+ yards in four games.
This was all during an 11-game regular season and him many times sitting out for whole 4th quarters! Unreal.
