I'm glad to see ROPE listed because it's vastly underrated even by Hitch himself (conversation with Truffaut). To me it's arguably his greatest films in economy, depth, and mise-en-scene. Then PSYCHO, SPELLBOUND (the last 2 with Hitch's 2 greatest film scores), NORTH BY NORTHWEST, and finally TROUBLE WITH HARRY, another underrated masterpiece (in his popular volume on H's films, Robin Wood pretended the film didn't even exist for reasons of which I'm unaware! That book was over-rated anyway.
10. Any Hitch directed episode of "AHP" 9. North by Northwest 8. Strangers on a Train 7. Lifeboat 6. Rope 5. Dial M for Murder 4. Psycho 3. Vertigo 2. The Birds 1. Rear Window ...Yeah, I kinda did top ten instead of top five... No I'm not sorry!
I'd say in terms of popularity there is no disputing these four core films--the crown jewels from the Hitchcock vault.
So the fifth one can be more personal, and though I like Strangers, it seems kind of dated and stuck in the "1950s" if that makes any sense, as opposed to Notorious, which still seems classier for its classic cast, and thus to me, ultimately more watchable.
I also love Shadow of a Doubt, Foreign Correspondent, Spellbound, The Birds, Suspicion, Strangers on a Train, and Rebecca. I love looking at all you other guys' top five lists.
JJranch, I couldn't agree more - by listing my top 10 I am still missing out the likes of Rebecca, Shadow of a Doubt, Dial M for Murder and Rear Window... 1. Vertigo 2. The Rope 3. Strangers On A Train 4. Psycho (only 4th but still great) 5. The Man Who Knew Too Much (1956 version but 1934 original also very good) 6. The Trouble With Harry 7. North by North West 8. Frenzy 9. The Birds 10. The Parradine Case Worst: The Skin Game (only Hitchcock I found dull)
As I have always told film buffs when they ask me a Queston like this. Hitchcock has the best Batting Average in Film History, I think he made 55 films and 50 are good to great, so prolific, he did not make just 7.8 ,14,15 movies.Hitchcock is the greatest Director in the history of cinama, Every director up to the present day has tried to make one Hitchcockian type film. My top 5, it depends on the day, the weather. The Lady Van Rebca,LifeB,Young & Innocent, Shad of Dou. The 5 I"D watch Today.
here's my top ten: 1.Strangers on a Train 2.Psycho 3.Vertigo 4.Dial M For Murder 5.North by Northwest 6.Rope 7.Rear Window 8.Notorious 9.Shadow of a Doubt 10.The Birds
i have not seen all of those but you're top 2 are definitely mine as well. i have always loved psycho but after seeing strangers on a train i can't decide which i like better...perhaps still psycho
Nice to see Marnie though. Highly underrated classic, in my opinion. However, I disagree on The Birds. Never saw much in that movie. Seems more Ed Wood than Alfred Hitchcock to me.
WOW! thanks for the response people. I forgot the password to this channel a year or two ago, so i recently started a new one just to comment on videos. My list has changed since.
How about this: 1. Vertigo 2. Shadow of a Doubt (Hitch's own fav.) 3. Notorious 4. Psycho 5. The Lodger Rebecca was Selsnicks film. Dial M too stagey/old fashioned Rope ditto Strangers on a Train would be my 6th. Worst film: Under Capricorn
NZ: I have to see that one again, but it was interesting. The Lady Vanishes was a good film too.
And still, there are a number of his American films that are practically forgotten. I just saw I Confess a couple weeks ago and I thought it was very well-made.
i cant respond to this comment as i have forgotten the password lol,but this is my new acount, psycho is one of the most overated movies of all time there is far better hitchcock movies out there hence it was not selected it would make the top 15.
My top 5 is:
1.Vertigo
2.North By Northwest
3.Rear Window
4.Psycho
5.Notorious
But almost all of Alfred's films are at least amazing if not masterpieces!!!

mansuitfilms....you are a loon
Take out Marnie, Rope and Vertigo and place them lower in order.
Add "Notorious", "North By Northwest" and "The 39 Steps" to the TOP FIVE.
There is quite a catalog of great films by Hitch. But no doubt 'The 39 Steps"
and it's sister movie "North By Northwest" are not only Hitch's best but some of the best of all time.

What do you think is the most overlooked/underrated Hitchcock film that you like?
