  • My top 5 is:

    1.Vertigo

    2.North By Northwest

    3.Rear Window

    4.Psycho

    5.Notorious

But almost all of Alfred's films are at least amazing if not masterpieces!!!

  • My favorite 5 at this point in time (haven't seen all 56 or something) would be:

    1. Psycho

    2. Vertigo

    3. North by Northwest

    4. Notorious

    5. Dial M for murder

  • Doing a Top-5 Hitchcock film list is nearly impossible, so Here's a Top-1 list,,

    "Vertigo"

  • 1. Vertigo

    2. the Birds

    3. young and innocent

    4. psycho

    5. shadow of a doubt

  • I'm glad to see ROPE listed because it's vastly underrated even by Hitch himself (conversation with Truffaut). To me it's arguably his greatest films in economy, depth, and mise-en-scene. Then PSYCHO, SPELLBOUND (the last 2 with Hitch's 2 greatest film scores), NORTH BY NORTHWEST, and finally TROUBLE WITH HARRY, another underrated masterpiece (in his popular volume on H's films, Robin Wood pretended the film didn't even exist for reasons of which I'm unaware! That book was over-rated anyway.

  • 10. Any Hitch directed episode of "AHP" 9. North by Northwest 8. Strangers on a Train 7. Lifeboat 6. Rope 5. Dial M for Murder 4. Psycho 3. Vertigo 2. The Birds 1. Rear Window ...Yeah, I kinda did top ten instead of top five... No I'm not sorry!
  • 5. Young and Innocent

    4. Rope

    3. Rear Window

    2. Psycho

    1. The Man Who Knew Too Much

  • 1. North by Northwest

    2. Shadow of a doubt

    3. Dial M for Murder

    4. Torn Curtain

    5. Stage Fright

You could easily have a top 20 as so many are my favourite all time.

  • Bad choice of music

  • 5. The Birds

    4. North by Northwest

    3. Rear Window

    2. Psycho

    1. Strangers on a Train

  • Dont forget Shadow of a doubt!

  • 5. The Birds

    4. North By Northwest

    3. Psycho

    2. Vertigo

    1. Rear Window

  • Four of them are no-brainers:

    1) Vertigo

    2) Psycho

    3) North by Northwest

    4) Rear Window

I'd say in terms of popularity there is no disputing these four core films--the crown jewels from the Hitchcock vault.

So the fifth one can be more personal, and though I like Strangers, it seems kind of dated and stuck in the "1950s" if that makes any sense, as opposed to Notorious, which still seems classier for its classic cast, and thus to me, ultimately more watchable.

    So...

    5) Notorious

  • my top 10 North by Northwest Rear Window Notorious strangers on a train to catch a theif virtigo pshyco topaz 39 steps the man who knew too much
  • My top Five:

    1. Psycho

    2. Strangers on a Train

    3. Rope

    4. Saboteur

    5. North by Northwest

  • Man I am NOT a fan of Rear Window or The Birds, don't understand why they're held in such high esteem.

    My top 5:

    1. Rope

    2. Strangers on a Train

    3. Shadow of a Doubt

    4. Rebecca

    5. North by Northwest

  • Number 1 is DIAL 'M' FOR MURDER..... Second is PSYCHO...

  • Psycho is not even in the list? Dude, Psycho was the best!!

  • Man I see many people are saying Rear Window as number 1, but for me North by Northwest and Vertigo were much better.

  • My top 5 Hitchcock movies:

    1. Rear Window

    2. Psycho

    3. Dial M For Murder

    4. Frenzy

    5. The birds

    For me, its:

    1. Rebecca

    2. North by Northwest

    3. Strangers on a Train

    4. Notorious

  • 1. Rebecca

    2. Rear Window

    3. Psycho

    4. Shadow of a Doubt

    5. The Man Who Knew Too Much (second)

  • mansuitfilms....you are a loon

Take out Marnie, Rope and Vertigo and place them lower in order.

Add "Notorious", "North By Northwest" and "The 39 Steps" to the TOP FIVE.

There is quite a catalog of great films by Hitch. But no doubt 'The 39 Steps"

and it's sister movie "North By Northwest" are not only Hitch's best but some of the best of all time.

  • 1.Rear Window

    2.Shadow of a Doubt

    3.Vertigo

    4.The Birds

    5.Psycho

Honorable Mention( Notorious, Rope, Dial M for Murder)

  • Top five, you say? 1. VERTIGO. 2. NOTORIOUS. 3. THE 39 STEPS. 4. NORTH BY NORTHWEST. 5. REAR WINDOW. Peace - and thanks!

  • 1. Vertigo

    5. Shadow of a Doubt

  • 1. Vertigo

    2. Rope

    3. Rear Window

    4. Strangers on a Train

    5. Psycho

(North by Northwest and The Birds would probably come next on my list)

  • @FOMFilm how is vertigo and rope better than rear window ? rear window is the first

  • @Gencturk92 Well that's the thing about Hitchcock, each of his movies hook people differently.

  • 1. Psycho

    2. North by Northwest

    3. Strangers on a Train

    4. Shadow of a Doubt

    5. Rear Window

    rear window

  • 1. Shadow of a douby

    2. The Rope

    3. Strangers On A Train

    4. North by Northwest

    5. Rebecca

  • How North by Northwest is not in here, I can not imagine.

  • Vertigo > any other movie, ever.

  • JJranch, I couldn't agree more - by listing my top 10 I am still missing out the likes of Rebecca, Shadow of a Doubt, Dial M for Murder and Rear Window... 1. Vertigo 2. The Rope 3. Strangers On A Train 4. Psycho (only 4th but still great) 5. The Man Who Knew Too Much (1956 version but 1934 original also very good) 6. The Trouble With Harry 7. North by North West 8. Frenzy 9. The Birds 10. The Parradine Case Worst: The Skin Game (only Hitchcock I found dull)
  • @Stewartu26 I would have to agree completely with your list without rearranging a single title.

  • As I have always told film buffs when they ask me a Queston like this. Hitchcock has the best Batting Average in Film History, I think he made 55 films and 50 are good to great, so prolific, he did not make just 7.8 ,14,15 movies.Hitchcock is the greatest Director in the history of cinama, Every director up to the present day has tried to make one Hitchcockian type film. My top 5, it depends on the day, the weather. The Lady Van Rebca,LifeB,Young & Innocent, Shad of Dou. The 5 I"D watch Today.

  • 1. Rebecca

    2. Strangers on a Train

    3. Vertigo

    4. Rear Window

    5. Shadow of a Doubt

Nice to see Marnie though. Highly underrated classic, in my opinion. However, I disagree on The Birds. Never saw much in that movie. Seems more Ed Wood than Alfred Hitchcock to me.

  • 1,) Psycho

    2.) Vertigo

    3.) Rear Window

    5. To Catch a Thief

I haven't seen "Psycho" or "Vertigo" but am ready to replace them on here because I've heard they are very good.

  • @tarwagne A, Charade was directed by Stanley Donen, not Hitchcock!

  • Psycho should definitely be there. And I personally wouldn't put The Birds or Marnie on the list. They're great films, but not the best Hitchcock.

    2.psycho

    1.rear window

  • Here's a question:

What do you think is the most overlooked/underrated Hitchcock film that you like?

  • Tough one. Most of his British stuff doesn't get the attention it deserves. Im suprised that no one, including myself has mentioned 'the 39 steps'.

  • NZ: I have to see that one again, but it was interesting. The Lady Vanishes was a good film too.

And still, there are a number of his American films that are practically forgotten. I just saw I Confess a couple weeks ago and I thought it was very well-made.

  • 1. Rear Window

    2. Psycho

    3. Shadow of a Doubt

    4. Dial M for Murder

    5. The Lodger

  • I haven't seen all his films but mine so far would have to be:

    1. Suspicion

    2. Rear Window

    3. Notorious

    4. Shadow of a Doubt

    5. Dial M for Murder

But no matter what, I've never been disappointed by a single one of his movies. ;)

  • 5.vertigo

    4.39 steps

    3.north by northwest

    2.dial m

    1.rear window

  • No Notorious? =(

  • 1. Vertigo

    3. Rebecca

    4. Shadow of a Doubt

    5. Notorious

  • top 5 hitchcock movies

    5.vertigo

    4.the birds

    3.rope

    2.rear window

    1.psycho

  • No VERTIGO or PSYCHO this is a ridiculous Hitchcock list, get lost.

  • Vertigo was on it.

  • Cool list! I love all of them except Marnie, which was actually my least favorite Hitchcock film that I've seen so far (although I still liked it).

    My Top 5 Hitchcock movies:

    1. Rear Window

    2. Psycho

    3. Strangers on a Train

    4. The Birds

    5. Rope

Runner-ups would be Vertigo, Shadow of a Doubt, North by Northwest, and Spellbound.

  • i cant respond to this comment as i have forgotten the password lol,but this is my new acount, psycho is one of the most overated movies of all time there is far better hitchcock movies out there hence it was not selected it would make the top 15.

Kudos though, on your other three choices.

  • thanks =)
