You see, that's where you went wrong. Touching the babies. You're not supposed to do that. Your scent rubs off on them, and the mother wont be able to recognize her own babies, and she will eat them. Also, you should separate the male hamster from the female when she has babies. There'll be a chance that the male will eat the babies.

Here's a tip.. WHATEVER HAPPENS... DON'T TOUCH THE BABY HAMSTER WITH YOUR HANDS OR EVEN DAMP WITH YOUR SKINS or else... the mother will eat her babies because of the smell... For six years, I experienced to have some 40 hamsters.. I realized that if I touched the babies, the mother will eat it as soon as possible.. (because the mother can smell something on her babies if it was touched by us humans).... hope this helped...

@juliehaifa its natural, it's supposed to happen. The mother does not allow poorly formed pups to live on and give birth to other poorly formed pups and destroy the species.
I had this same problem a few years back with my hamster, It gave birth to like 10 pups and was eating them every night. The mother was well fed and all but just kept eating her babies. Unfortunately they all died. :( She even ate the eyes which was disturbing.
It's nature you idiots! Hamsters eat their babies when they feel that there isn't enough food for everyone or one of the babies are sick and the mom doesn't want the disease to speard or she's just storing them in her pouch.
The owner could not have done anything. Sometimes, in the wild and captivity a mother will reject the babies. It can be through lack of protein to which..yes it is horrible, but she will eat her babies to replenish her lack of protein. Also the mother can be too young and will not have the correct hormone balance to know what to do.
Leave the poster alone, it is videos like this that help other hamster breeders understand their animals more and not interfer with their natural behaviour.

It's just a natural part of life. If a male lion does not approve of a lioness' cub they'll eat it.
If a cat sees that one of its newborns is too small and frail they'll either leave it out somewhere to die or eat it.
Understand that this hamster is not being a "monster" it's just following their natural instincts.. Either the baby had human scent on it or it appeared to have been too weak to take care of.
Animals don't have the same laws as humans do. Not easy to watch but it's normal.

@crazychimp321 well, it looks like it doesn't, but i experienced it when raising hamsters, i noticed that, the first time, when they had pups, i didn't realize it, and was just throwing for in there without playing with them for like a weak, after that, i realized that there were more hamster in there, so i decided to keep them in my mind at all times, so, then, after weeks later, they had more and more pups, so i started to touch them, and at one time i realized they were actually eating them

You see, that's where you went wrong. Touching the babies. You're not supposed to do that. Your scent rubs off on them, and the mother wont be able to recognize her own babies, and she will eat them. Also, you should separate the male hamster from the female when she has babies. There'll be a chance that the male will eat the babies.

@moondarse si pero date cuenta de lo que yo estoi diciendo, que no los cuidan bien, en eso incluye en que no les dan la comida adecuada, no se esperan aque tenga bebes mas tarde y no tan joven, a eso me refiero precisamente, ella fue mi primera hembra y para dejarla embarazarse me informe en internet bastante y me espere a que tuviera 4 meses de edad para que se embarazara y la alimente bien, no es tanto de que dependa de la mama al fin y al cabo son casi iguales todos los hamsters.

Here's a tip.. WHATEVER HAPPENS... DON'T TOUCH THE BABY HAMSTER WITH YOUR HANDS OR EVEN DAMP WITH YOUR SKINS or else... the mother will eat her babies because of the smell... For six years, I experienced to have some 40 hamsters.. I realized that if I touched the babies, the mother will eat it as soon as possible.. (because the mother can smell something on her babies if it was touched by us humans).... hope this helped...

I had this same problem a few years back with my hamster, It gave birth to like 10 pups and was eating them every night. The mother was well fed and all but just kept eating her babies. Unfortunately they all died. :( She even ate the eyes which was disturbing.

The owner could not have done anything. Sometimes, in the wild and captivity a mother will reject the babies. It can be through lack of protein to which..yes it is horrible, but she will eat her babies to replenish her lack of protein. Also the mother can be too young and will not have the correct hormone balance to know what to do.
Leave the poster alone, it is videos like this that help other hamster breeders understand their animals more and not interfer with their natural behaviour.
